Board of Directors Nominee Biography
Name: John Peach
Why are you applying to be considered for the Heritage Credit Union Board of Directors? At Heritage CU, I have been Board Chair for the past two years and the Vice Chair for three years prior
to that. I have also served on the Audit, Governance, Corporate Social Responsibility, Nomination and
Executive committees. As the Board’s training coordinator, Heritage CU has become recognized as a
leader in Board training and in February 2011, I was pleased to accept, on our Board’s behalf, the 2011
Leadership in Co-operative Governance Award from the Canadian Cooperative Association.
Through my participation with the Credit Union Central of Nova Scotia (now Atlantic Central), I have
become familiar with the challenges that we as a credit union system face and have been an active
participant in working towards solutions to these challenges. I believe the diversity and experience I have
garnered will contribute to the success of Heritage Credit Union as the financial institution of choice for
our members.
What skills, knowledge and experiences do you bring that you believe will contribute to our Board of Directors? I completed the Credit Union Director Achievement (CUDA) program (2005) and also became an
“Accredited Canadian Credit Union Director” through the study and exam process of Dalhousie
University and the Credit Union Institute of Canada (2008).
I would group my competency to be a Director in two categories: technical and behavioural. I have a
strong foundation in the technical competencies such as skills and knowledge required for decision
making, knowledge of Standards of Sound Business and Financial Practices, governance acumen,
knowledge and application of cooperative principles, knowledge of the credit union system and financial
services marketplace, financial literacy, policy development, and in the regulatory environment in which
credit unions operate. My behavioral competencies include experience in change leadership, negotiation
and mediation, CEO performance management, communications, and strategic leadership and direction.
These competencies enhance my ability to add value and contribute to the success of Heritage CU. I
believe that I demonstrate accountability by supporting efforts to manage our growth, budget,
profitability, equity, and through promotion of a philosophy of service excellence. I am delighted to have
been part of this experience for the past few years and would love to have the opportunity to serve for
another term.

Why are you applying to be considered for the Heritage Credit Union Board of Directors? I am a strong believer in Heritage Credit Union and enjoy the fact that I am part of
the credit union as a member/owner. I have served on the Board of Directors for the
past three years and have taken all available training as required. Having
previously held many executive volunteer positions such as chairperson, director,
treasurer, and public relations; serving on the board gives me an excellent
opportunity to use my experience and business knowledge to “give back” to the
Credit Union that has supported me.
What skills, knowledge and experiences do you bring that you believe will contribute to our Board of Directors? Serving on the Board for the past 3 years, taking all training required as it became
available, and being actively involved in all board discussions has provided me
with excellent experience and growth. As a successful small business owner, now in
our 18th year, I have learned how to make good business decisions and think
outside of the box. I am a positive, energetic leader who works well under pressure,

Why are you applying to be considered for the Heritage Credit Union Board of Directors? I have the desire to participate in the democratic process of the operation of our
credit union, and to have a voice in the policy making decisions. Our credit union
offers all the tools found in the large banks and I want to promote our credit
union as a major alternate to the banks, and to contribute to, and learn from, the
credit union.
What skills, knowledge and experiences do you bring that you believe will contribute to our Board of Directors? I am a founding board member of Arimathea Funeral Co-op in Upper

business owner. I have a willingness to listen to and consider all opinions. I will
bring patience, compassion and empathy to the deliberations of the credit union
board.

Board of Directors Nominee Biography
Why are you applying to be considered for the Heritage Credit Union Board of Directors?
I have served two full terms as a member of the board of directors of Heritage
Credit Union. During that time I have come to appreciate the real nature of the
credit union movement and how that movement is capable of improving the lives
of its members and society as a whole. I am proud of the many achievements of
Heritage Credit Union during my time as a board member and believe that I can
make a significant contribution to achieving even greater things should I be
elected to a third term.
What skills, knowledge and experiences do you bring that you believe will contribute to our Board of Directors? My formal training is in law and business. I have found that my education has
served the board well in adding expertise on legal questions that have come up.
I have also served five years as the Board Chair of Capital Health Authority and
the experience of a governance board of that size has served me well in assisting
with credit union issues. I have completed all board training required in order to
serve and have the added advantage of 6 years of experience in putting that
specific training into practice.
