We’re looking forward to putting a performance on the field tonight that you can be proud of. As a squad, we’ve enjoyed the week together and we’re looking forward to sharing the occasion this evening. The Jaguares present a huge challenge and this is going to be a historic Super Rugby Final. Argentinian fans are incredibly loud and passionate supporters of their team, and we need Crusaders fans to lift the energy tonight and be the difference! Stay sharp,

FLASHBACKThe BNZ Crusaders and Jaguares last met back in 2018 at Jaguares home in Buenos Aires. Here is a look back at that match: Providing an applied lesson in the value of dynamic defence, the BNZ Crusaders beat the Jaguares 40-14 to move back to second place on the Investec Super Rugby ladder in Buenos Aires on Sunday (NZT). In spite of having to make only 31 tackles compared to 68, carrying for 72 metres to 43 by the BNZ Crusaders and winning 54 rucks to 30 to enjoy a 60 percent possession advantage, the home team found themselves down 0-19 at halftime. When they had opportunities the BNZ Crusaders were ruthless. They followed that with an even more emphatic lesson 66 minutes into the game after a series of scrums out from their own line. Head Coach Scott Robertson made a bold call to substitute two of his front row with hooker Ben Funnell and prop Donald Brighouse coming on and delivering the scrum resistance which saw the BNZ Crusaders unsettle the Jaguares scrum. The home side dropped the ball and the Crusaders pounced with first five-eighths Mitchell Hunt sending the ball into open space in the Jaguares' 22m. The ball wasn't cleared and when the attempted kick was made, second five-eighths Ryan Crotty charged it down and regathered the ball to score in the corner. Then from the restart a kick downfield by replacement halfback Mitchell Drummond was not held by left wing Emiliano Boffelli and BNZ Crusaders right wing Manasa Mataele gathered the rebound to race 50m for his second try.Their first case study occurred seven minutes into the game, after a strong midfield break by Crotty where the Jaguares failed to secure ball in the tackle and hooker Codie Taylor tidied the action creating a chance. Halfback Bryn Hall spied George Bridge with space on the left wing and flung a long pass which allowed the wing to dive over in the corner. The Jaguares mounted another strong surge at the BNZ Crusaders line, one of several (including a 29-phase build-up in the first half) but a missed pass went to ground where Bridge swooped to secure the ball and light out 70m for the try in the 13th minute. Again the Jaguares poured onto attack but were unable to find a way through the opposition, in spite of the best efforts of first five-eighths Nicolas Sanchez, fullback Joaquin Tuculet and second five-eighths Bautista Ezcurra.Instead, it was an unnecessary no arms tackle by lock Tomas Lavanini, that created another opportunity for the BNZ Crusaders to dish out another example of their finishing. Kicking to the 22m area, the Crusaders worked a lineout move with flanker Tom Sanders taking the ball at the front of the lineout, transferring it to flanker Matt Todd who fed Taylor on the double round from the front of the lineout. He ran infield where blindside wing Mataele burst onto the ball and through a tackle to score a spectacular try.The Jaguares then worked a lineout maul to advantage to get into the Crusaders' 22m area, where the ball was moved with fullback Joaquin Tuculet crossing for a 43rd minute try. That set in train some third quarter scoring ping-pong as the BNZ Crusaders employed an immediate response tactic when they won a ruck in midfield after a strong carry by lock Luke Romano. His momentum provided ball which saw centre Tim Bateman throw a long pass to Mataele who pushed off his marker Boffelli, Sanchez, and then in Tuculet's tackle, he passed inside to Hunt who scored in the 45th minute. The Jaguares introduced substitute Ramiro Moyano and he ran onto ball from halfback Gonzalo Bertanou, and then linked with Tuculet. Ezcurra then ran down the sideline to fling the ball inside, where Boffelli took the ball to score. But in the end it was the BNZ Crusaders' defence that triumphed to deny the home side any consolation in the final stages.

Scorers: Jaguares 14 (Joaquin Tuculet, Emiliano Boffelli tries; Nicolas Sanchez 2 con) Crusaders 40 (George Bridge 2, Manasa Mataele 2, Mitchell Hunt, Ryan Crotty tries; Hunt 4 con; Mike Delany con). HT: 0-19

A HALFTIME LIKE NO OTHER

The 2018 Super Rugby Final at Christchurch Stadium was a thrilling match between the BNZ Crusaders and the Johannesburg-based Lions and aside from the Crusaders win, one aspect of the event which caught the eye of fans and commentators alike was a show-stopping halftime performance from the musical The Greatest Showman. Match-enhancement at BNZ Crusaders home matches has always been an important part of each event, and following the 2018 final the focus of the event team this season has been to deliver an experience which further enhances the rugby played on the field. The 2019 Super Rugby Final includes a very special halftime performance featuring Caleb Jago-Ward, Cameron Walsh, Jackson Roche, Epic Entertainment Dancers, JK Dancers and the Vocal Collective, with the concept and creative produced by Epic Entertainment. Caleb Jago-Ward’s career began in theatre in Wellington, he then sprung to national attention on the Voice Australia as a member of Team Delta, performing songs by Queen, The Darkness, Starship and Fun. After television he joined The Ten Tenors for their sellout New Zealand tour of The Power of Ten, donned sequins and heels as Felicia for a transatlantic season of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and was lead vocalist for Australian “ballroom rebels” Burn the Floor. Later in 2017, Caleb portrayed two LGBT queens from Sydney’s Kings Cross in the immersive cabaret hit Hidden Sydney, based on real life events from the glittering mile. Other credits include Hairspray, High Fidelity, Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, The Australia and Asia tours of Peppa Pig Live! Treasure Hunt, Buttercup’s Big Break, Pirate Blue and the Panto-Loons, and NZ original musical 1931. Caleb most recently portrayed Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar at The Court Theatre and Galileo in We Will Rock You at the Isaac Theatre Royal. Cameron Walsh is an 18-year-old New Zealand Guitarist and Singer/Songwriter who specialises in Country, Blues and Rock. His guitar proficiency has been influenced largely by Stevie Ray Vaughn, David Gilmour and New Zealand’s own, Phil Doublet. Cameron has regularly played in cover bands and in backing bands in both New Zealand and Australia. As a solo artist he sings and plays at regular weekly gigs and is also releasing his new album “Black Gold” in May 2017. Jackson Roche is a talented drummer who hails from a musical family with his dad playing the cornet and trumpet and his brother a singer. Jackson plays all sorts of genres from rock and pop to jazz and blues and he also has a rare talent of being able to play bucket drums. He’s been a regular on the Christchurch busking scene for a number of years. The Vocal Collective (formerly the Christchurch Pops Choir) was created to bring joy to the people of Christchurch and delights in performing popular music at venues around the city and beyond. The repertoire is chosen from a wide range of genres with vocal styles such as pop, rock, jazz, musical theatre, swing, soul and even some traditional classics creating an exciting mix for performers and audiences alike. JK Dancers are a local contemporary dance troop who perform locally and nationally. Epic Entertainment has created unique entertainment experiences for some of Canterbury’s largest events and some of its most intimate ones too. Epic’s acts feature Canterbury’s finest dance, theatre, fashion and cirque talents and they have been a regular at Crusaders home games over the past few seasons.
