Grimes Chamber & Economic Development (GCED) is a coalition of

prominent business people constantly striving to improve the quality

of life in one of the fastest growing communities in Iowa. In addition

to promoting local business, we are leaders in ensuring that a number of long-

standing community events occur every year. The goal is simply to improve the

community. Every day, we work with those around us to make Grimes better

than it was the day before.

We offer our members networking opportunities, event

sponsorship opportunities, informational luncheons and

business referrals. As an Affiliate Member of the Greater

Des Moines Partnership, we offer an avenue for local

business representatives to reach a much larger regional

network of potential clients. The Economic Develop-

ment arm of our organization works with prospective

businesses and developers to help them build, relocate

or expand business opportunities right here in our com-

munity.

While we have a business focus, individuals who share the desire to continuously

improve the community are always welcome and encouraged to get involved.

If you are one of those people, we provide the perfect avenue to do so with our

These rankings are important because they reflect to the world what we here in

central Iowa already know — that we have the opportunity to live and work in

a truly great place. The rankings are even more telling because it is not Iowans

bragging about Iowans, but rather independent third parties offering recogni-

tion to our region.

While the rankings generally reference Des Moines, know that these are region-

al designations and that all of the communities that comprise the region con-

tribute to our ability to receive these accolades

Grimes specifically offers great advantages to businesses and developers seeking

a positive return on their investments, which is why the community continues

to grow at such dramatic rates. The following is a list of factors that are generally

recognized drivers for growth and investment in our community:

Location, location, location. Grimes is strategically located at one of Amer-

ica’s primary transportation crossroads. We are literally a stone’s throw away

from two major Interstate systems (Interstate 80 and 35) that provide a logistic

gold mine for any business shipping or receiving goods. Regionally, Grimes

is located on the northwest side of the largest metropolitan area in the state of

Iowa (Des Moines) and is considered the gateway to northwest Iowa.

Entrepreneur friendly. Grimes Chamber & Economic Development often

works with individuals or small groups who have an idea for starting a new

business. When we cannot provide an answer directly, we call upon our many

economic development partners to help us fill the void. If you have an idea for

Proximity. Grimes is in close proximity to not only the major markets of Iowa,

but the entire Midwest. The community is centrally located to Chicago, Den-

ver, Omaha, Minneapolis, Kansas City and St. Louis, as well as many other

strategic locations. On a more local level, Grimes is approximately 20 minutes

or less from most amenities in the Des Moines metropolitan area.

Opportunity. Grimes has numerous active business parks with uses varying

from office and commercial to light and heavy industrial uses. These existing

parks provide a variety of affordable lots with infrastructure in place. Also, there

is available undeveloped land in large tracts just minutes from Interstate access,

which are considered prime locations for future development.

Qualified workforce. Grimes has a very young, well-educated population,

with an average age of less than 32 years. Furthermore, the area draws quali-

fied employees from not only the city of Grimes, but the greater Des Moines

metropolitan area.

Growth. Grimes is one of the fastest growing communities in the state of Iowa.

The community has grown nearly 200 percent since the 1990 Census and near-

ly 53 percent in the past eight years. We anticipate that when the 2010 Census

figures are released that Grimes will be nearing 10,000 in population. Accord-

ing to population projections, the community is estimated to be nearly 30,000

within 20 years.

Quality of life. Grimes has experienced dramatic growth for a variety of rea-

sons, many of which are listed above. However, one of the reasons so many

choose to locate to the area is because of the stellar school districts in the area.

There are two school districts that serve the Grimes community: Dallas Center-

Grimes and Johnston, both of which are elite institutions in a state recognized

for its educational attainment. Grimes also has numerous sports and general

use parks, recreational trails and opportunities for everyone to get involved in a

truly a progressive community.

GCED: What it stands for and why you should care.

Grimes Chamber & Economic Development…G.C.E.D. The organi-

zation is a private non-profit entity that has been serving Grimes in

its current form since 2003. Prior to 2003, there were two separate

groups — one served as the local Chamber of Commerce and the other served

as an economic development group. They were merged into one entity in order

to provide continuity of service and to allow the new group to combine their

resources with the goal of hiring their first full-time executive director.

Since 2003, GCED has been growing and evolving along with the com-

munity. The organization employs a membership model. In 2007, there were

less than 80 members. Currently, there are more than 200. The membership

is primarily comprised of businesses that are located in Grimes, or that have

Grimes in their service territory. Also in the membership are schools, churches,

civic organizations, government and individuals.

Businesses, organizations and people join GCED for a variety of reasons.

Some join to help promote their business or organization through common

association and networking. Others join out of a sense of obligation to the orga-

simply support the mission, the work, and/or the vision of continually improv-

ing the community. The reasons for investment in GCED are as varied as the

membership itself.

GCED conducts a wide variety of services for its membership and the

community at large. We provide an avenue for businesses and organizations

to know one another and build or strengthen business relationships. We are

the primary economic development organization for the community, with the

goal of working with property owners, developers and employers to help attract

the type of growth that will provide good jobs, quality housing options and the

highest quality of life in central Iowa.

We also work to market the recreational opportunities that attract visi-

tors to our community. While we don’t have tourism in our name, we do our

best to advertise Grimes for all of the great

amenities that would be considered tour-

ist activities. These things would include

hotel options, recreational opportunities

(i.e. Climb Iowa, Sky Zone, Beaver Creek

Golf, parks, trails, restaurants, etc.).

The GCED office is currently com-

prised of two full-time staff. Therefore, we

rely heavily on many partners to donate

their time, donate their money and donate

their advice and assistance in order to make

us successful.

Why should you care? If you own

land in Grimes, own a business in Grimes,

live in or near Grimes, commute through

Grimes, work in Grimes, go to school in

Grimes, or whatever your connection is to the community, you should care.

You should care because the success or failures of GCED will likely directly or

indirectly impact you. The vibrancy of the local business community impacts

the ability to not only get a job, but to potentially have and keep a really good

job. The growth of high value developments keeps your property taxes as low as

possible and your local services at a high quality. It determines how many com-

munity events will be “sponsored by” a great local business or will simply not

occur at all.

A healthy economy, a healthy economic development environment and

an organized approach to growth and community development is essential to

having a great quality of life for residents and a great business environment for

companies.

n behalf of the city of Grimes, we welcome you. We have worked

with the staff of Grimes Living magazine and Grimes Chamber &

Economic Development to create not only an official business direc-

tory for the community, but also a central point for information on city services,

organizations and boards.

Our staff at City Hall fields a number of questions each day, and we address the

ones we hear the most in these pages. Whether you are a long-time resident, new

to the community or just trying to learn more about our city, you will find this

guide to be helpful and informative.

We encourage each of you to take an active role in shaping Grimes by becoming

involved in city government or any of Grimes’ many civic organizations. We are

truly pleased to call Grimes our hometown.

With the community’s strong family orientation, wholesome setting for children

and adults, and affordable residential living, Grimes brings new meaning to the

term “family values.” A growing number of people are escaping the fast pace of

Des Moines and moving to Grimes. And you all know why.

Grimes is a wonderful place to raise a family. Children in Grimes benefit from

the city’s commitment to education. In the elementary schools, the new middle

school and the high school, the Dallas Center-Grimes School District provides

some of the finest education, facilities and teachers.

Grimes provides a wide variety of housing options for any budget. The housing

developments in Grimes have a wide range of new and existing homes to choose

from. There is also an ample supply of apartments for various budgets. Our hous-

ing options are rounded out with a number of mobile home parks. With the

multiple housing options available, quality living in a secure environment is easy

to find.

With the current population of close to 10,000 and more than 400 businesses,

Grimes has changed dramatically since its founding in 1881. Yet, even today,

there’s still that friendly Midwestern atmosphere and sense of community that

brings people close together. Located just to the northwest of the Des Moines

metropolitan area, Grimes is close enough to enjoy the metropolitan advantages,

yet far enough away to maintain small-town security and peace of mind.

With the growth of Des Moines’ metro area, Grimes is uniquely poised for con-

tinued growth. We hope that you share the excitement we have for our com-

The Dallas Center-Grimes School District is deeply committed to pro-

viding every child a quality education in a safe environment. We cannot

do this alone. The support of parents, staff and our community is vitally

important to ensure that all of our children are prepared to be successful workers,

family members and citizens.

Our school district serves approximately 2,500 students.

Dallas Center and Grimes are ideally located just minutes

west of the Des Moines metro area. Dallas Center and

Grimes offer a unique‚ small town environment that pro-

vides a strong sense of community. We are very proud of

our schools and the strong support that we receive from the

parents, local businesses and patrons in the district.

The district’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan

focuses on improving student achievement in all areas, with

significant emphasis on reading, math and science. Student achievement is mea-

sured through the use of Iowa Assessments, which are standardized tests, as well as

criterion referenced tests and classroom diagnostic testing. Students in the DC-G

School District continue to perform well above statewide averages.

The district has three elementary schools, one middle school, one 8-9 school, one

high school and an alternative high school.

schools. We also have two community partners in our Pre-Kindergarten pro-

learning environment and many opportunities for students to develop a strong

academic foundation.

As our world changes, schools must work to keep up with those changes. The

technology that our students have available to them at school continues to

increase. In the fall of 2012, the 8th grade students were each given a laptop (Mac-

Book Air) for use at school and at home. These students will keep their laptops

for the remainder of their school years. In the fall of 2013, the incoming 8th grade

students will be given a laptop and then in the fall of 2014, all students in grades

8-12 will have a laptop or another personal device to enhance their education. The

staff has on-going professional development on how to use and integrate technol-

ogy use in the classroom.

Parks & Rec

The Grimes Parks and Recreation Department is in charge of leisure activities in the city of Grimes. These include the parks system, Grimes

Community Complex, Grimes Sports Complex and the recreation programs and activities for the citizens of Grimes. Grimes features several

city parks. Waterworks Park, located along North James Street north of Highway 44, has two shelters, two playgrounds and ball diamonds.

Lions Park, located at the east end of North Fifth, North Sixth and North Seventh streets, has a shelter, soccer fields and playground equipment. Beaver-

brooke Park is at the south end of Park Circle in north Grimes. Shawvers Park has a shelter, grill and play structure. North Point Park is being developed

at this time. Glenstone Park is being developed also. To reserve one of the shelters, call Grimes Parks and Recreation Office at 986-2143. The Grimes

Parks and Recreation Office is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and is located

in the Grimes Community Complex, located just off of Hwy. 44, south

on Main Street where the old Middle School existed. Brett Barber is

the Parks & Rec director. The gym is a popular spot for sports teams to

practice and for adults to play pick-up volleyball and basketball games.

Citizens can rent the court as well as different rooms of the facility for

parties, reunions, meetings, celebrations, etc. by calling Grimes Parks

and Recreation Office at 986-2143. The Grimes Sports Complex covers

44 acres in the southwest area of Grimes. It includes two tennis courts;

multiple soccer fields, including one lighted tournament field; three vol-

leyball courts; three softball fields; four baseball fields; two basketball

courts; a skate park; walking trails; concession stand; and a large play

structure. The complex is located along South James Street, just south of

the Grimes Elementary School. Please check online at www.grimesiowa.
