Official Academic Regalia for Convocation
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) gowns are based on doctoral gowns from Oxford University in England. They
are made of red broadcloth with gold silk on the sleeves and on the facings down the front of each side of the
gown. The front facings are trimmed with green silk. The gowns have a clasp but are usually worn open at the front. It is the only degree at Trent that has a hat: a round, green velvet “beefeater” style trimmed with gold cord
and tassels. Students graduating with a Ph. D. in Indigenous Studies wear a green velvet stole decorated with four golden feathers on top of their academic dress.
Master gowns are based on the Oxford University Master of Arts gown, with extra long sleeves that hang
down with slits in them to you put your arms through. The gowns have a clasp but are worn open at the front.
They are dark green, made from a wool blend.
