_POWER LINESAs Dallas evolves into a vibrant cityscape, many architectural factors, both new and old, must strike a balance. The Statler Hilton exemplifi es a classic design spirit that is often lost in the hasty progression of development. Rather than disguising the facade, the Power Lines installation emphasizes the Statler’s existing expressive persona. When viewed from the Main Street Garden or high up within the Mercantile tower, Power Lines becomes a cascading stream of oranges and blues that celebrates the Statler’s varied architectural organization as well as visually tempering its disrepair.

A series of nylon straps unify the disparate elements of the building’s base while accentuating the prominent architectural forms. The patterns created by the strapping trace the existing geometry. By abiding by the structure, the straps adopt the building’s form as their own. The virtue of the strap is how forgiving and accepting it is to the spans and the surface it wraps. At street level the straps are perceived individually and vary infi nitely as people move past. As the sun tracks overhead, the straps’ shadows choreograph unexpected patterns upon the Statler and the sidewalk below.

The utilization of nylon straps allows the temporary facade to be constructed by way of wrapping rather than attaching. Where possible, the strapping will run along the face of the building and secure itself upon corners and columns. Temporary shoring posts create depth and maintain tension in the strands. This depth is a buffer between the Statler and the street, protecting the facade from further wear. The slight offset allows for the undulating straps to be backlit as well as preserving an unobstructed access corridor along Commerce. At night, as the straps recede into darkness, a subtle profi le glow becomes Power Lines’ secondary personality.

Three internally illuminated scaffold towers are tucked into the facade’s architectural voids and act as organizers and distributers of the straps. Literally woven into the installation, the scaffold towers become lanterns at night, creating a safe pedestrian environment. The tower’s base is wrapped in translucent fabric that emits a gentle glow from an internally hanging fl uorescent chandelier. The scaffolds are both a visual and physical transition for the straps. By tautly wrapping the straps to the scaffold along their eventful route, the towers become the anchors of the project.

While minimizing cost and upholding environmental concerns, the installation is assembled with readily available components. Rolls of strapping develop a sense of surface over large areas with minimal material, making it economical per square foot. The strapping’s inherent durability and lightness allow it to be primarily supported by wrapping the Statler and secondarily by the scaffolding and shoring. Upon disassembling Power Lines, the nylon strapping can be recycled or reused. All scaffolding and shoring can be borrowed or acquired second-hand and then reused after the project is complete. Assembly and disassembly does not require highly skilled labor. The combination of straps and self-supporting structural elements has the appearance of complexity but is simple in execution.

The liveliness of Power Lines will capture the imagination of the people of Dallas, bringing excitement and attention to the urban core. While the installation compliments the Main Street Garden, it also becomes a destination in its own right. The composition of lines, color, and light embrace the Statler Hilton’s architectural richness and historical importance while proclaiming an energetic and dynamic outlook towards the future of downtown Dallas.
