From the President’s Desk

Dear Friends,

We have come to the end of 2018. Looking back on this year, I feel our guild has accomplished a lot. We

have increased our numbers, learned new techniques, grown new friendships and strengthened old

friendships. At least, that is true for me and I hope for each of you.

I want to personally thank each of you that had any part, no matter how small, in contributing your ideas,

skills, support and labor to make our guild a success.

As we get ready to hit 2019 wide open, I hope all of you will think of Burke Quilters' Guild as one big happy

family. Just as families must cooperate to keep peace and harmony within their circle, I hope we can do

the same. If you have an idea or suggestion on how to improve our guild, please speak up. We can't always

implement every idea or suggestion, but please know we will certainly try to do so.

Here are my wishes and hopes 2019 starts off with - and lasts throughout the year, with blessings

abounding.

Happy Quilting,

Judy

Burke Quilters Guild Meeting – Secretary’s Report

December 17, 2018 Judy Pearson welcomed everyone to the meeting. Judy asked if we had any visitors and Pat Bell brought two visitors, Sandy Bernarsky and Terry Martino. Committee Reports: Treasurer: Nancy Harris handed out an updated budget report. The budget was voted on. There was a motion to accept the budget and Karel Johnson made the motion and Debbie Mangold seconded the motion. Judy Pearson asked if there were any questions about the budget. The budget was approved by a unanimous vote by a show of hands. Yearbook: Linda Henson stated to send her the information for the yearbook by January. Fund Raising Committee: Members are Barbara Whipple, Nancy Harris, Debbie Mangold, and Linda Myers. UFO CHALLENGE: Pat Bell said there were 51 completed with 27 participants. Opal Woody completed the most UFO's. A drawing for a gift certificate was drawn and Linda Myers won the $25-dollar gift certificate from the Cotton Quilt. WEE CARE QUILTS: Susan Briggs stated the most quilts made were by Opal Woody. She made a total of 60 quilts. Susan said we gave 125 to the Sherriff’s Department, police, and hospital. The Drawing for a $25-dollar Cotton Quilt certificate and was won by Lori Gervasio. Judy Pearson did announce that today was Opal Woody’s husband’s funeral. We all have Opal in our thoughts and prayers.

Phyllis Fox suggested that members tell her when someone needed a card for sympathy, thinking of you, or anything. Phyllis will send Opal a sympathy card. There was no other business. We then went to Show and Tell. After Show and Tell we all enjoyed our Christmas Luncheon. Respectfully Submitted, Dinah Weaver, Secretary

1. Use an accurate ¼” seam allowance. Accuracy is key in quilting, so always double check your seam

allowances accurately measure ¼”. (Investing in a ¼” foot on your sewing machine can help.) When all

the seams are the same, correct size, fabric pieces will fit together easily, and seams will match up

neatly.

2. Read instructions thoroughly before you begin. Understanding where a pattern is headed and what

supplies you will need before you begin will help you get through each step with ease.

3. Always pin before you sew. Pinning will help you align seams properly, which will help you avoid having

to rip them out later. A time-saver any quilter can appreciate!

4. Always set seams. To achieve a straighter seam, press the sewn seam flat, then press it in the direction

you need it to lay. The finished top will be worth any extra effort.

5. Keep your scissors handy and use the correct scissors for fabric and sewing.

6. Replace sewing machine needles regularly. Change your needle every 8 hours of sewing time or for

every new quilt top. Using a nice sharp needle will ensure it moves smoothly through fabric and helps

prevent snagging, skipping, and pulling.

7. Be prepared. Get organized before beginning a project. Make sure you have all the notions you need on hand, pre-wind your Bobbins, iron your fabric before cutting, and so on. Paying attention to these details will help keep you moving through a project rather than having to keep stopping and starting.

8. Buy the best your budget allows. Choosing good quality fabrics and notions will help you enjoy making projects so much more. It will also help you avoid the frustrations that can arise from using inferior fabrics, notions, or equipment.

9. Start small. If your new to quilting, making smaller projects, such as pillows, mini quilts, and runners, is a great way to build confidence and skills. Home décor projects offer the perfect opportunity to hone your skills by making smaller projects with bigger blocks.

10. Make oversized blocks. When making classic blocks, such as Half-Square Triangles or Flying Geese, sew slightly oversized blocks (if the pattern doesn’t already account for it) so that you can trim them down accurately to the correct size. The finished look is worth the effort!

11. Save leftover batting. Scraps from larger projects are often a good size for pillows. Keeping them in your stash can save you from having to run out and buy more batting for future projects.

12. Take a class. Check out your local quilting store or go online. Getting some help and advice is a great way to hone your skills as well as meet other creative, like-minded people who share your interests.

These 5 tips were contributed to us by Katie Blakesly, a quilt designer and well-known blogger of @swimbikequilt. Check out her blog for patterns and supplies.

1. It doesn’t matter how pretty it is, if it doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t work. Years ago, I wrapped all my half yards meticulously on comic boards and put them in these black bookshelves. Rainbow order, it was lovely. But I hated taking the fabric from the boards, cutting off a piece, and wrapping it back up. Do you know what works for me? Organizing fabric by color, and throwing it in an opaque bin, folded, barely folded, or just thrown in there. See those gray bins? Utter chaos lurks inside. And it’s wonderful!

2. Find a way to display your quilts. You will probably feel more inspired to create if you have reminders of the beauty of finished projects around you. I have 2 quilts hung on my wall [I have hung quilts in all my sewing spaces, actually), and I also love having the wire basket (mine is from Target) storing my rolled-up quilts.

3. Pretty storage doesn’t have to be expensive. Thrift stores, super sales, inheriting things from friends–these are great places to find pretty storage pieces. I absolutely love storing my “in progress” 12.5” x 12.5” blocks out in the open in this 14” x 18” tray

"4. If you have a small space, make your [movable] storage serve multiple purposes When I sewed in my living room, pictured left, I bought this Ikea rolling cart (Alex) and at one time stored it under my small sewing desk [not pictured here]. I could roll it out when I needed it and roll it back in when I wasn’t sewing. It has an ironing board on top, so I didn’t have to pull out the ironing board and take up even more space. [A piece of plywood, covered in a few layers of batting, with an Echino print stapled on.] 5. Make room for a design wall A design wall is a quilters best friend, and it is so much better than a design floor! I used a tutorial by Katie Pederson of Sew Katie Did in 2013. One tip Katie gives is to use flannel sheets instead of

flannel fabric–the sheets I bought from Garnet Hill are still going strong. This design wall was in my living room in Alexandria (my husband joked it was our ever-changing art installation), my bedroom in Portland, and now my studio in Salt Lake City. I can’t believe it made it through all our moves!

We hurried and scurried and got it all ready. Food was on the table and

we wanted to eat. Business was handled with the greatest of ease –

then on to our feast with games not far behind!

And we had one more show and tell. This was the result of a class taught by Patsy Caraway. The class was originally offered as a prize in our auction held in August. This beautiful all hanging was done by Carolyn Rains. The talent of both teacher and student clearly shows.
