Letter from Rosi Adams, continued:

A total of 97 dogs of various breeds ended up at the Greensboro Shelter, this number included 22 Weimaraner's. From the very beginning, TWR was in contact with the shelter offering our help. With the assistance of Dr. Rita McGinnis DVM and many, many volunteers Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue was able to adopt 18 of the 22 Weims. All dogs from the approximate ages of 3 - 7 years had to be spayed and neutered, Heartworm tested and vaccinated, 10 of the 18 dogs needed extensive Veterinary care, mainly dental care and tumor removals. One older female Weimaraner had to be euthanized as she never recovered from her spay - this poor "girl" was basically "bred to death". Even with excellent Veterinary care, her life could not be saved. She was told she was a good girl, petted and cared for and sent to the Rainbow bridge in a loving manner. I am happy to say that all remaining dogs are now in foster care and are awaiting permanent loving homes. It goes without saying that taking in 18 Weimaraner's within a few days has been a terrible strain to TWR - especially as we already had many current dogs awaiting new homes. The financial impact has been tremendous. Luckily we have had some generous donations from both TWC members, friends of Rescue and complete strangers. We will persevere I have no doubt! More updates are available on our website www.tarheelweimrescue.org. Should you like to make a donation, a pay pal option is available or we gladly accept checks. Rescue Report: Rescue has been busy, it‟s difficult to know where to begin. In addition to the Rush dogs, we have approximately eight others that are currently looking for permanent homes and, an additional 5 pups which we took in last week (3 with parvo, one of them died despite the vet‟s best efforts). During April and May, we successfully adopted out approximately 12 dogs. When it gets tough and the dogs seem to be falling from the sky, we cling to those success stories, like the boys Harvey & Stuart. They were given up together and were so attached to each other that we wanted to keep them together. As a result, they spent quite a long time with Dyana at The Dog Club in Wilmington waiting for the right home. We thought you would enjoy an update from the new owners; this is why we work on Rescue every day:

These are our four beautiful children; Julia, Aidan, Harvey & Stuart: Harvey and Stuart were welcomed into our home on April 10th, 2010. They are our 2nd and 3rd Weimaraner and our first rescue dogs. These loveable siblings have completed our home and compliment our family so well! Dyana at Tarheel Weimaraner rescue went above and beyond to assist us in adopting the boys for which we are so very grateful! The transition has been seamless in every way. The boys have adapted very well to our home and environment, as well as to our 7 and 11 year old children. They are so well mannered that we were surprised to hear that our home is their first true home. Harvey & Stuart were completely housetrained and socialized when they joined our family which made the adjustment period VERY easy! AND, they‟ve yet to be caught with a shoe in

their mouth because they are way smarter than that….they went for the steak instead! The boys love their brother and sister so much that each and every day their tails wag and they bark like crazy when they hear the school bus pull up in front of our home in anticipation of the kids‟ arrival. And at night when we settle down to relax for the evening in the living room, the boys are right there with us arguing over the dog bed knowing full well they both fit on it! We wouldn‟t believe it if we hadn‟t seen it with our own eyes, but they both like to „fluff‟ the oversized pillow before lying down on it. They are such characters and we love them to pieces. It really leaves me in awe that these two dogs could have been given up on, when they had so much life and love left in them. We‟re elated that they are sharing both with us! Thank you TWR for doing what you do! Rescue participated in “Paw Jam”, an event held in Wilmington on May 1

st. Dyana, Kathy Page, Al and Dana

worked the booth so we owe them a special “Thank you”, talked to many people about Weims, “showed off” Vlad and Min (two of our available dogs), talked to folks about fostering or adopting. Dyana made some wonderful poster boards featuring our available dogs and everyone reports that it was a very successful day! We have already booked Paw Jam 2011 for May 7! Thanks to everyone, once again, for your support ! The TWC Specialty and Sweeps had a great turn out. Kudos to all who diligently emailed back and forth to ensure we had a GREAT showing. We had exhibitors come from as far south as Florida and as far north as NYC. The Raleigh circuit drew majors in bitches all 5 days and in dogs every day except Wednesday. Special thanks to Nicholas “Nick” Ambulos who saved the day by agreeing to judge sweeps when our original judge canceled at the last minute. Helen Lee James was our Specialty judge and she was quite complimentary of our showing.

We cannot forget our hard working helpers: Rusty Jenrette for the endless phone calls and emails guiding us through the process; our daughter Jamie, manning the trophy table on show day; Cindi Caravati for providing flowers, candy and being the official scribe of the catalog of results; Jack and Lucy Sappenfield, setting up for the show and Jack for making his awesome medallions for our Sweeps winners and his BIS trophy; and Melissa VanMastrigt, for bringing goodies for our sweeps participants. We cannot put on events without the generosity of our members for providing Trophies, Rosettes and prizes for our Specialty Show, Sweepstakes and Obedience classes, many thanks for your continued support: Ross & Rosi Adams, Cindi & Michael Caravati , Sally Feltner, Mary Lee Garfield, Henrietta “Rusty” Jenrette, Eric & Jamie Libow, Kathy & Skip Page, Helen & Joel Sanderford, Jack & Lucy Sappenfield, Linda & Gene Schilling, Gretchen & Stewart Stephenson, and Linda Weick. Present were board members Eric Libow, Helen Sanderford, Jack Sappenfield, Christine Flock, Carol Parron and guest Lucy Sappenfield. The meeting was called to order at 5:12 pm. The following was covered: 1. Retrieving Ratings – June 19 and 20 – Carol chair. Charleston will have one day (we will offer them Saturday) and we will have the other. 2. Bark around the Park – Christine and Kathy Page chairs – Plans are going well – Will send an email to membership announcing the event and asking for help. 3. Pig Picking & Introduction to retrieving seminar – June 12 – Christy Raper and Helen chairs for the pig picking – Betta chair for the seminar. 4. Agility trials – July 24 & 25 - Carol will contact Mary Oppermann and see if we need to do anything now. 5. New title ribbons – We had an extended discussion about both “new title ribbons” for hunt test qualifiers and also “new title” awards for our members. It was noted that we do give new title ribbons for agility trials. We need to know more about the costs of ribbons for Hunt Tests before we can make a decision about offering them next year. We do acknowledge our members‟ new titles in the Weimaraner magazine every year. In order to do more, especially with the addition of multiple new AKC titles, it would require a person to volunteer to chair an awards committee. 6. Helen reported that she‟d sent a trophy donation to WCA for the spring national specialty. We will also send a basket of NC items for the raffle. Jack and Lucy will make up the basket and deliver it to Gettysburg. On Saturday, April 17, 2010, Tarheel Weim Club and Tarheel Weim Rescue participated in Bark Around the Park in Raleigh. Our goals for the day were to share our knowledge of and experiences with the Weimaraner breed, educate the public about the lovely traits of our breed and simply be an overall resource for the community. We talked about diet issues, health issues, agility questions, puppy and Rescue questions with people from all over the immediate Raleigh area and beyond. Jack and Lucy Sappenfield brought two of their awesome girls for show and tell and everyone loved them! Betta Breuhaus brought two of her beautiful pups which drew quite a crowd. Karin Singleton brought “Mr. Darcy”, one of our former Rescue dogs who is now spoiled and loved. Thank you all for helping to make the day a huge success. Thanks also to Eric, Stacy and Jamie Libow for attending the event and helping us spread the word about Weims! We gave out quite a few business cards to families possibly looking for puppies and also to those wishing to rescue. Overall, a huge success! Some photos attached of our booth and helpers – two legged and four!

Aka:

Experience with PPDH (Peritoneal Pericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia) and a complicated recovery process

On August 12, 2009 my dog Mr. Darcy underwent surgery at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Cary. It was supposed to be a liver biopsy and turned into the repair of PPDH. I did some research after the event, and found that PPDH is a congenital birth defect that, while rare, seems to be more prevalent in Weimaraners. It happens when the fetus does not develop properly. There is a hole in the diaphragm (that is the large muscle that separates the chest from the abdominal cavity) that allows tissue from the internal organs, such as liver, pancreas, intestines, or stomach, to protrude into the chest cavity, potentially affecting the heart (the pericardium is a sac that surrounds the heart). In Mr. Darcy‟s case, this hole was almost 2 inches in diameter. However, until the day of the „liver biopsy‟ nobody was expecting to find the condition PPDH. It is rare, and there does not seem to be a clear-cut set of symptoms. When I reported back to my regular vet, he told me that he knew of the condition but had never encountered it himself.

In hindsight, there were signs that pointed towards it, and I want to summarize them here so that others may be alerted and can possibly shorten the diagnostic process.

A blood test detected highly elevated liver enzymes (in his case ALT (SGPT) and alkaline phosphatase). The initial diagnosis was hepatitis, and it was treated with antibiotics. Initially, it seemed to improve, but after 2 re-tests, the levels were as high as they had been before, prompting the recommendation for a laparoscopic liver biopsy.

Both ultrasounds of the liver showed a texture that was not right. The second one indicated potential problems with the gall bladder and bile duct.

In addition to that, I had also made some casual observations that only in hindsight make sense.

Mr. Darcy is about 2 years old. I had often noticed that he was not as energetic as I expected a „normal‟ Weimaraner at that age to be. I just thought he was very laid back.

The whole process started when I rushed him to the hospital because I thought he was about to bloat; his stomach was distended and something just did not seem to be right.

He began to act differently towards food and refused to eat dry dog food. I later learned that part of his pancreas, intestines and liver had herniated into the chest cavity. The dry food probably made him feel bad.

He sometimes seemed to feel unwell after having eaten. That went away after a little while, and he acted completely normal again.

He also once had an umbilical hernia. It was fixed when the club had him neutered (he is a rescue), and I never thought anything of it. I know now that it can go together with PPDH.

The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter May 2010 12

I had never even heard of PPDH until this experience. It is obviously a very serious condition, but it not the first thing that a vet would suspect. As our Weimaraners are more prone to it than other breeds, I wanted to share my experience with you. The story continues ….. After the surgery, I expected that things would gradually return to normal within a week or two the way they do after abdominal surgeries. Unfortunately, they did not. I had completely underestimated the complicated recovery process following this kind of surgery, and I suppose that there is not much data to guide the patients and their caretakers. I put Mr. Darcy on the normal „EN‟ diet which is normal after surgeries. Subsequent blood test showed that his liver enzymes were still elevated. A bile acid test was done and also had elevated values. The hunt was on for the cause, and the possibility for a „Portosystemic Shunt‟ was mentioned. An ultrasound was done, and the possibility of an external shunt was pretty much eliminated. An internal shunt was only a remote possibility because dogs with this condition usually have stunted growth (Mr. Darcy is large for his breed), and their livers are shrunken. The ultrasound showed evidence of pancreatitis. In the meantime, Mr. Darcy had good days (few) and bad days (more), was often lethargic and really did not show any signs that he was returning to his normal self. His food intake became more and more picky. Ultimately, he only ate milkbones, and even those he refused after throwing up. Mr. Darcy was getting worse, and ultimately had to be hospitalized one more time after a flare-up of pancreatitis, vomiting and just being worn out. It was now more than 5 weeks after the surgery, and, frankly, I was bracing myself for the worst because I saw no improvement and did not want to subject him to any more invasive tests. I had a meeting with the surgeon, and he told me how bad the situation inside Mr. Darcy‟s body actually had been. Parts of his liver, pancreas and intestine had been entrapped in the hole. He actually had to enlarge the hole first to pull them out! We agreed to hold off on any more tests and try a diet route. I had read that a low protein and low fat diet sometimes helps, and that was the plan of action. However, putting theory into practice in such a difficult clinical case is easier said than done. I was blessed to have found Dr. Susan Lauten who specialized in pet nutrition. With her help, I put Mr. Darcy on a strict diet. Within 2 days, I began to see an improvement. By the end of October 2009, I had almost completed the process of moving Mr. Darcy to a more normal diet. At this time, I decided to cook for him, according to a recipe that Dr. Lauten had provided for me. Mr. Darcy is much improved, and I am no longer concerned for his life. The recovery process is still ongoing. It seems that his liver and pancreas are still trying to get used to the new situation after having been entrapped for about 2 years. Having the benefit of hindsight both with the diagnostic process (see above) and with the recovery, the one essential component after his surgery was the nutrition. I believe that I could have spared Mr. Darcy a lot of pain and suffering and myself many sleepless nights if I had contacted Dr. Lauten immediately after the surgery. Mr. Darcy was fortunate in having a surgeon who was able to „fix‟ the mechanical part of the problem. But this was only half the battle. The nutrition part was just as important for his recovery, and I cannot recommend Dr. Susan Lauten more for her caring and expertise. She can be reached through www.petnutritionconsulting.com.

The Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter May 2010 13

By the end of January 2010, Mr.Darcy‟s problems were beginning to look like a bad memory. I was still going to the vet for regular check-ups on the bloodwork, which was continuing to improve. And I continued to consult with Dr. Lauten, whose expertise I value above all, and who continues to guide me through adjustments in his diet. Otherwise, Mr. Darcy is doing really well now. We walk pretty much every day for about 4 miles, and he comes home with energy to spare. He is a changed dog. He is the happy, goofy, rambunctious, carefree dog that I had been waiting for so long. In other words: he is just a typical Weimaraner ! Submitted by Karin Singleton

As responsible dog owners this is something that we must do. One of the main reasons that non-dog people don‟t like our dogs is the poop that they leave. It‟s very important to pick up at dog shows, motels, rest areas, neighbor‟s yards, but it‟s also important to pick up in parks, and at field events. I keep a box of gallon size food storage bags in my car and keep a bag or two in my pocket when I travel or go on walks. Using these bags, available in grocery stores, it‟s easy to pick up poop, turn the bag inside out, tie an overhand knot in the top and deposit it in a trash receptacle. Others that I know, use sandwich zip style bags, and newspaper wrappers. If you prepackage meals in bags for travel, they can be recycled. You can even pick up litter and use it. It‟s important to pick up even at outdoor events, if your dog poops where a person may step in it. If a pooper scooper is available, you can pick it up and deposit it in a hedgerow, next to a tree or some other inaccessible spot. Even if your dog poops off to the side of the trail in a park, pick it up. Children often wander a bit off the trails. Responsibility doesn‟t end with picking up poop. What do you do with it then? Dumspters are my first choice for bagged poop at motels, dog shows, parks, etc. Bagged poop can be deposited in trash cans, but I always look for those lined in plastic bags. The poop that you pick up in neighbors‟ yards needs to go home with you. You can put it in your trash. When on the road you can stop at a rest area and leave it there. When visiting friends with your dogs ask what they want done with it. For example, at our place we‟d like you to use pooper scoopers and move it to an out of the way place. If you do use a plastic bag to pick it up, please do not leave the soiled plastic bag here. You can take the poop and bag with you. Or you can dump the poop in an out-of-the-way place (poop decomposes rapidly, plastic does not) and put the dirty bag in a clean plastic bag and take that with you. But, please don‟t put poop or dirty bags in our trash. We have to take the trash to the dump, and really don‟t want to smell poop for days. Submitted by Carol Parron Editor’s note: More and more, clubs have poop bags and buckets with pooper scoopers available at the show sites. If you forgot to bring poop bags from home, take some of these bags with you to your motel and use them to pick up poop there. If your motel does not have designated poop disposal areas, bring your poop-filled bags with you to the show site and deposit them in the poop buckets. That way the trash cans at the motel will not smell bad to other guests. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
