THE STORY

THE MECCA OF MAILWhat was once a key stop during the pinnacle of railroad-delivered mail, the Rail and Commerce Building first opened its doors on July 3, 1926. Designed by W.T. Krausch, a well-known engineer of the time, and originally titled the “Burlington Mail Terminal,” the building, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a unique design to best accommodate the railway which once traveled through its lower level. Along the railroad tracks was also the original connection to the 10th Street Bridge.

OMAHA, THERE’S A NEW HOT SPOT IN TOWNThe Rail and Commerce Building lies right in the hub of the historic Rail and Commerce District, an area that was vital to Omaha’s economic growth from the late 1800’s to the mid-1900’s. The district’s proximity to downtown Omaha and its unique offering of historic commercial, residential and retail buildings is driving its recent boom! New, notable projects keep popping up, including the renovation of the historic Burlington Station by KETV, the addition of the Blue Barn Theater and BoxCar 10 Apartments, and the re-purposing of the Postal Annex into a year-round artisan farmer’s market. Within the next two years, the Rail and Commerce District is slated to experience phenomenal growth - an estimated $100 million dollars is currently being committed to capital improvements in the area.

The building also features the “Daylight Factory” design, which had become common to multi-storied industrial structures. The use of steel rods embedded in concrete construction allows for the creation of layer upon layer of nearly unobstructed floor space. Large windows fill the exterior walls to flood the space with natural light and fresh air.
