The WPA California Folk Music Project is a multi-format ethnographic field collection that includes soundrecordings,stillphotographs,drawings,andwrittendocumentsfromavarietyofEuropeanethnicandEnglish-andSpanish-speakingcommunitiesinNorthernCalifornia.Thecollectioncomprises35hoursoffolkmusicrecordedintwelvelanguagesrepresentingnumerousethnicgroupsand185musicians.

ThiselaborateNewDealprojectwasorganizedanddirectedbyfolkmusiccollectorSidneyRobertsonCowellfortheNorthernCaliforniaWorkProjectsAdministration.Sponsoredby theUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,andcosponsoredbytheArchiveofAmericanFolkSong(nowtheArchiveofFolkCulture,AmericanFolklifeCenter),thisundertakingwasoneoftheearliestethnographicfieldprojectstodocumentEuropean,Slavic,MiddleEastern,andEnglish-andSpanish-languagefolkmusicinoneregionoftheUnitedStates.

FederalMusicProjectMixtapeTheWNYC andMunicipal Archives contain several FMP recordings of African American choral groups singingspirituals and other traditional songs. Through the cracks and pops come expressive vocal arrangements andbreakoutsoloperformances.

TopFiveWPACommissionedWorks

It’sironicthatthegreatestfinancialdisasterthiscountryeverfacedbroughtaboutoneofitsrichestperiodsofpublicsupportforthearts.Thisweek,theOrpheusChamberOrchestrahonorstheWorksProgressAdministration,withGabriel’sGuidetothe48States.Thesongcycle,writtenbyGabrielKahane,whowillalsoperformwiththeensemble,isbasedontheW.P.A.-fundedAmericanGuides,whichemployeddozensofwritersacrossthecountry.

Florida Folklife from the WPA Collections, 1937-1942, documents the music, history and culture of Florida.Completedaspartof theFloridaWorksProjectAdministrationprogramthiscollection includes themusicandstoriesofthevariousethnicgroupsthroughoutFlorida.AlsoincludedareperformancesbyZoraNealeHurston,StetsonKennedy,AltonMorrisandothernotedwritersandartists.FloridaFolklifefromtheWPACollections,1937-1942,providesaccesstosoundrecordingsofregionalandethnicmusic of Floridians collected during the Great Depression.
