Letter from the Associate Provost

The Morehouse College Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) is pleased to provide you

with this annual report. The overall goal of the office is to develop and maintain the infrastructure needed to

support the research and training activities of the College. This includes developing the institutional capabilities

for research and public service, identifying sources of support for sponsored projects, developing and

implementing training programs for proposal writing, developing institutional policies that relate to sponsored

activities and to assist, when possible, with the proposal development.

This report covers the last three fiscal years of grant activity from both the federal and private

foundation funding sources. During these fiscal years, Morehouse faculty and staff had a 98% success rate with

220 applications submitted and 216 receiving funding. These 216 grants yielded total awards in the amount of

$20,022,731 in direct awards and $1,963,779 in indirect awards. Collectively, over the lifetime of these active

grants they have generated $7,915,268 in indirect cost awards through fiscal year-end 2016. There was a year

over year decrease in indirect cost awards between FY 2015 and FY 2016 reflecting the ending of two major

program grants (Navy and NIH-BRIC). This report does not reflect any pending proposal applications.

The Office of Academic Affairs and the entire Morehouse College Community appreciates the efforts of

all faculty and staff that have identified and secured externally funded grants, contracts and cooperative

agreements. I encourage others to become a part of the team that seeks to secure funds for the College’s

enrichment and enhancement of programs and activities. We are here to help and provide workshops about the

grants process throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Michael Hodge, Ph.D.

Associate Provost for Research, Scholarship and Creative Production
