The Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the two cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into a jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was filled. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into a jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was filled. The students responded with a unanimous, “Yes.”

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar. Effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now”, said the professor as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things – God, family, children, health, friends and your favorite passions. Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else – the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18 holes. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first. The things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled: “I am glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there is always room for a couple cups of coffee with a friend.”

Experience the Joy of Following Christ

Following Christ takes more than simply believing in him or doing what he asks of us. Jesus wants

you to be more than just a believer — He wants you to be his disciple and friend.

Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John is your guide to a personal encounter with Christ. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus seeks after us. He comes to meet us and beckons us to follow him.

He calls us to be his disciples, to trust him, to open ourselves to his merciful love, and to love others as he has loved us. Follow Me invites you to experience the joy

of a renewed friendship with Christ.

You will:

Learn what it takes to follow Christ.

Discover the joy of divine friendship.

See how God, and only God, can satisfy the deepest desires of your heart

Introduction to Mother Teresa “The cry of Jesus on the Cross, ‘I thirst’ (Jn 19:28), expressing the depth of God's longing for man,

penetrated Mother Teresa's soul and found fertile soil in her heart.” St. Pope John Paul II, 19 October 2003

A Holy Life Mother Teresa’s life began in Skopje, Yugoslavia, and ended in Calcutta. Her journey, however, took many different paths along the way. Read more on-line. ‘I Thirst, I Quench’ In her own words, Mother Teresa encourages her Missionaries of Charity to embrace their vocation as a gift from God and to use it as Inspiration for the work they are doing. How Does One Become a Saint?

For almost the first millennium of the Church’s life, there was no centralized canonization process with investigation into the person’s life and miracles attributed to his or her intercession. The local Church recognized as saints holy women and men whose life and death demonstrated great virtue. The term “Servant of God” now describes someone at the start of the entire process, which begins in the local diocese and eventually moves to the Holy See’s Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. A person whose life and writings have been formally investigated can be declared Venerable. Martyrs do not need a miracle for beatification. For others, after a miracle has been investigated and accepted by separate committees of doctors, theologians, and cardinals, the person is approved for beatification. The final step for canonization is the verification of two miracles attributed to that holy person’s intercession, both of which undergo intense scrutiny. After canonization the term Saint is ap-plied to the person. The Pope’s declaration of sainthood is in the form of an infallible declara-tion of a matter of faith. - Rev. Pat McCloskey, OFM

Mother Teresa required her new order’s sisters to dress in the traditional Indian Sari (right) worn by the women they served. She and her sisters dressed in a much less colorful, standard blue and white sari.

Road to Sainthood Mother Teresa served as a living example to others, of being a model of God’s love and mercy. Incl. Fr. Angelo Scolozzi, M.C. III.O. Read more on-line.

The Mother Teresa I Knew

Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala, M.C., the first priest ordained as a Missionary of Charity, speaks of Mother Teresa’s impact on his life and vocation. Read more on-line.

Saint of the Gutters In earlier centuries, Mother Teresa might have been declared a saint upon her death. Though it has taken 19 years, her road to canonization has been swift. Read more on-line.
