MISSIONARY PREACHER: Father Ricky Bermas of the Diocese of Legazpi in the Philippines will be here on October 1st & 2nd to speak to us about the mission needs of his diocese. Legazpi has a population of one million people who are served by 90 active priests and 140 religious. It serves the people through schools and special apostolates/ministries such as among street children and the mentally challenged, as well as programs to help families, youth and the poorest of the poor. The Diocese of Legazpi has developed a five-year plan to build the Christian community and serve the needs of the people. They need our financial help. Your donations will help form the clergy, religious, and lay leaders; support scholarships for poor but deserving seminarians; serve the poor and marginalized through social outreach programs; fortify ministries on evangelization, education, and the renewal of society through the promotion of justice, and peace, and the integrity of creation. Habrá (...) alegría en el cielo por un solo pecador que se convierta

Hoy consideramos una de las parábolas más conocidas del Evangelio: la del hijo pródigo, que, advirtiendo la gravedad de la ofensa hecha a su padre, regresa a él y es acogido con enorme alegría. La parábola enseña que nadie está perdido para Dios, y anima a todo pecador llenándole de confianza y haciéndole conocer su bondad, encierra también una importante enseñanza para quien, aparentemente, no necesita convertirse: no juzgue que alguien es “malo” ni excluya a nadie, procure actuar en todo momento con la generosidad del padre que acepta a su hijo. El recelo del mayor de los hijos, relatado al final de la parábola, coincide con el escándalo inicial de los fariseos. En esta parábola no solamente es invitado a la conversión quien patentemente la necesita, sino también quien no cree necesitarla. Sus destinatarios no son solamente los publicanos y pecadores, sino igualmente los fariseos y escribas; no son solamente los que viven de espaldas a Dios, sino quizá nosotros, que hemos recibido tanto de Él y que, sin embargo, nos conformamos con lo que le damos a cambio y no somos generosos en el trato con los otros. La conversión que necesitamos podría ser menos llamativa, pero quizá ha de ser más radical y profunda, y más constante y mantenida: Dios nos pide que nos convirtamos al amor.

Today, we are to consider one of the most celebrated parables of the Gospel: the parable of the prodigal son, who, while realizing the gravity of his offense to his father, goes back to him and is received with immense joy. This parable proves that nobody is meant to be lost for God, and encourages sinners by fostering their self-assurance and by showing them his goodness, it also includes a very important lesson for those who, apparently, do not feel the need of a spiritual rebirth: so, let us not decide that someone is “wicked” or do away with anyone; rather, let us always behave generously as a father accepting his lost son. The elder son's distrust, pointed out at the end of the parable, coincides with the initial malicious gossip of the Pharisees. In this parable, not only is invited he who most certainly needs conversion, but also who thinks he does not need it. Its beneficiaries are not only publicans and sinners, but also the Pharisees and scribes; not only those who decidedly live by turning their back to God, but, maybe, all of us, who, having been blessed by him, in spite of everything, conform ourselves to what little we give him in exchange, and skimp our generosity either with him or with our fellow men. The conversion we may need could perhaps be less noisy, but more radical and deep, and more constant and preserved: God is asking us to convert ourselves to love.
