This year our Community Garden is blessed again. Fifty-two beds are underway! We have 8 community people with a total of about 25 beds. There are 16 returning gardeners this year. Mike Kander continues to care for the flower beds along the road leading to the parking lot. Fruit trees, berry bushes, herb spiral and much more are growing and thriving and several folks have dropped off veggie starts for the communal use. Celebrating Our God beyond

Understanding

The festival of the Holy Trinity celebrates the wonder of relationship with God while

leaving us distinctly dissatisfied with our limited understanding of what God is. While

guarding against the idolatry of language,

we survey our scripture, doctrine, creeds, and symbols of our heritage. Equally

important, we pray for God to inspire fresh, innovative ideas of God in the present

moment.

Today’s gospel contains one of the few

biblical references to the trinitarian formula. As the eleven are commissioned to make

disciples, baptize, and teach, we are invited to consider our calling to influence the world

with the good news of God’s love. The text from Second Corinthians also includes a kind

of naming of the Holy Trinity in an affectionate sign-off of a personal letter.

With the psalm praising God the creator and

sustainer of all creation, Genesis 1 relates the first of two creation stories, this one an

ancient liturgy celebrating God as a divine plural.

That God that is beyond our understanding may be both troubling and comforting. The

temptation may be to attempt to apprehend the idea of God with our intellect, offering

the worshiping assembly a showcase of various models for God. The result is usually

disappointing and feeds our bias toward intellectualism. Another possibility is to

celebrate God’s presence in all its glory and colorful wonder and our belonging to this

wonder-full God.

Resuming Church Activities

Two weeks ago, the office emailed to all SLC

households a message from Bishop Jaech, along with

an attached document from the synod and one from

the ELCA. All three of these documents provide

guidance to congregations regarding the eventual re-

opening of churches for worship, Bible study, meetings

and other gatherings. These documents are also

posted on the SLC website.

Our congregation council is forming a work group to

plan the eventual resumption of activities that are now

suspended. The work group will be composed of

Worship and Music committee members, along with

other interested individuals and those with relevant

expertise. The plan will comply with Governor Inslee’s

re-opening timeline. It will also follow the advice from

Bishop Jaech and the ELCA. We will resume activities

according to a gradual schedule and will not attempt to

re-start everything at once.

In order to learn which gatherings are of greatest

interest, the SLC office will send out a survey to all

households. In addition, congregation council

members will contact households to communicate in

person on this topic. We anticipate the greatest

interest will be in returning to in-person worship.

Unfortunately, this is also the most complicated church

gathering to re-start because of the hazards related to

singing and reading out loud in a group. Also,

remaining 6 feet apart in our sanctuary would be

difficult because of the placement of the pews. The

work group will research this topic thoroughly and

develop a plan that will offer meaningful worship that

is also safe as possible. In the meantime, we will

continue with virtual worship services.

The council will keep you posted as the plans for

resuming church activities develop.
