Supply shortages will impact HPE’s (and every Vendor’s) ability to ship selected Solid State Drives (SSDs). There is currently a significant order backlog for those SKUs that are currently constrained. If End User Customers requires delivery in October and potentially November, they should be encouraged to change their existing and new orders to an alternative SSD option. Partners should highlight any critical orders which cannot be changed to their local HPE Sales teams and contact the OBP Technical PreSales team or their account manager to know the recommended replacements in each specific case.

Brocade GEN5 Fibre Channel – Metro Connectivity Features Since delivering the first Fibre Channel SAN switch in the industry in March 1997, Brocade has been a leader in developing SAN extension solutions to meet the distance connectivity needs of IT SAN architects, utilizing native as well as encapsulated extension solutions. However, with the introduction of the Brocade Gen5 FC SAN switching solutions, Brocade has again raised the bar for SAN distance extension solutions.

Powered by the Brocade engineered Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), Brocade Gen5 FC SAN switches support a number of new features that allow IT architects to build larger, more reliable, wide-area “stretched” SAN storage clouds.

With the new class of Gen5 Fibre Channel switches, Brocade has introduced a number of ASIC integrated extension capabilities that allow IT architects to design and implement a variety of metro-area SAN extension solutions without additional hardware. The metro area is defined as the distance from site to site of no more than 100 km, and with a Round-Trip Time (RTT) latency of no more than 5 milliseconds. In the event that SAN extension solutions are required over greater distances, with longer RTT times, Brocade provides dedicated SAN extension solutions that satisfy the most rigorous of these long-distance requirements.

The Brocade Gen5 Fibre Channel metro connectivity features include:

Native Gen5 FC Long-Distance Support: In addition to doubling the overall throughput, Gen5 FC switches are able to utilize a buffer credit pool of 8,192 buffers, which quadruples the Brocade 8 Gbps buffer credit pool of 2,048 buffers. A variety of distance extension architectures are also supported, utilizing native FC connectivity.

Integrated 10 Gbps FC Speed Support (optional license): Brocade Gen5 FC switches support port operating speeds of not only 16, 8 and 4 Gbps, but they also support a port operating speed of 10 Gbps. In addition to native fiber, operating the port at 10 Gbps is also supported over Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) solutions, such as Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM).

Integrated Inter-Switch Link (ISL) Compression: Brocade Gen5 FC switches provide the capability to compress all data in flight, over an ISL. This requires a Brocade Gen5 FC switch on both sides of the ISL, and a maximum of 4 ports per Brocade DCX 8510 (HPE SN8000B) Backbone blade, 8 ports per Brocade 6520 (HPE SN6500B) Switch, or 2 ports per Brocade 6510 (HPE SN6000B) Switch can be utilized for this data compression. With Brocade FOS v7.1 or later, additional ports can be utilized for data compression if running at lower than 16 Gbps speeds.

Integrated Inter-Switch Link (ISL) Encryption: Brocade Gen5 FC switches provide the capability to encrypt all data in flight, over an ISL. This requires a Brocade Gen5 FC switch on both sides of the ISL, and a maximum of 4 ports per Brocade DCX 8510 blade (HPE SN8000B), 8 ports per Brocade 6520 (HPE SN65000B), or 2 ports per Brocade 6510 (HPE SN6000B) can be utilized for this data encryption. With Brocade FOS v7.1 or later, additional ports can be utilized for data encryption if running at lower than 16 Gbps speeds. Both encryption and compression can be enabled on the ISL link simultaneously.

Enhanced Diagnostic and Error Recovery Technology: Brocade Fabric Vision technology, an extension of Gen5 FC, is a breakthrough hardware and software technology that offers innovative diagnostic, monitoring, and management capabilities to help administrators avoid problems, maximize application performance, and reduce operational costs. Fabric Vision technology includes diagnostic and recovery features that enable smooth operation of metro-connected SAN clouds. These features also include the ability to measure, verify, and saturate the ISL links between switch Expansion Ports (E_Ports), as well as between a Gen5 FC adapter and Gen5 FC switch, utilizing a Brocade-unique ClearLink diagnostic port (D_Port) feature. Additionally, Gen5 FC switches are able to detect and recover from buffer credit loss situations, in some cases without traffic disruption. Finally, SAN architects have the ability to enable Forward Error Correction (FEC) on ISL E_Ports and EX_Ports to improve error detection and correction.

HPE Servers Do HPE Standard Series Racks and HPE Enterprise Series Racks include the front and rear doors? What about the side panels? Yes, both series include perforated front and back doors, the design allows for more efficient cooling. Side panels are not included since they are not needed when installed in the middle of a row in the datacenter. They can be ordered separately depending on the rack model.

We would like to be able to manage several iLO instances from a single server, this way we do not have to connect to each server one by one. Is there any way to do something like that? iLO Federation enables you to manage multiple servers from one system using the iLO web interface. When configured for iLO Federation, iLO uses multicast discovery and peer-to-peer communication to enable communication between the systems in an iLO Federation group. You can see all the features included in the HPE iLO Federation User Guide. iLO Federation managent requires an iLO Advanced o iLO Scale-Out license.

Does the DL360 Gen9 include a Serial port? The DL360 Gen9 does not come with a serial port by default. You can purchase PN 764646-B21, it is a cable that goes from the motherboard to the rear of the server to provide a Serial port.

How are Apollo servers licensed for HPE OneView or Insight Control? Each node in the Apollo servers is considered as an independent server when licensing HP Insight Control or HPE OneView, therefore, you would need one license for each node.

What are Helium drives? Do they really have Helium or it is a marketing name? Helium drives do have Helium inside instead of normal air. The main advantage of using Helium drives is that more platters can be added into the drive due to the lightness of helium in comparison to air. More platters mean also more total capacity.

In UEFI, can I disable a processor? No, the processor itself cannot be disabled, it is only possible to disable the number of cores.

Do fans in ProLiant servers always work at the same speed or do they work dynamically? By default, ProLiant servers are set up to work dynamically. The iLO firmware, in conjunction with the hardware, controls the operation and speed of the fans. Fans provide essential cooling of components to ensure reliability and continued operation. The fans react to the temperatures monitored throughout the system to provide sufficient cooling with minimal noise. Increased Cooling and Maximum Cooling modes can be also set up for specific purposes in the UEFI. Is it possible to order the HP Dual 8GB microSD Enterprise Midline USB Kit with PN 741279-B21? No, currently this kit is on hold and not being shipped. Meanwhile you can offer HP 8GB USB Flash Media kit with Pn 737953-B21 is the recommended alternative

HPE Storage A customer is planning transition from 1GbE to 10GbE infrastructure. Is it possible on a 10Gb StoreVirtual 3200 system to use the embedded 1Gb ports for host traffic in the interim – before the whole infrastructure is 10GbE-ready? No, that is not supported. The embedded 1Gb host ports on StoreVirtual 3200 10GbE systems must be disabled.

What licenses do we need to use SSDs in a tiered configuration with spinning media on the MSA 1040? To use SSDs as performance tier on the MSA 1040 you will need the HPE MSA 1040 Adv Virtualized LTU D4T78A and HPE MSA 2040 Perf Auto Tiering LTU D4T79A. Is that OK to mix AP836A and AP836B in the same P2000 G3 chassis? Yes, these HP P2000 G3 MSA Fibre Channel controllers are technically identical. The only difference is that AP836B is RoHS compliant while AP836A is not. Anyway, they can run next to each other in the same chassis. How many drives are you allowed to present to a single StoreVirtual VSA? The limitation is up to 7 drives (raw or virtual) per VSA. For more information please see the HPE

We recently found out that the CMC Online Upgrades are no longer working. Has anything changed? Yes, due to domain name change (hp.com to hpe.com) the HPE StoreVirtual Centralized Management Console (CMC) must be updated to accommodate a change in the location from which StoreVirtual software and patches are downloaded. Without the update the CMC Online Upgrades feature would have ceased to function as of 15 September 2016. For more information

Is it possible to obtain an estimation on the Deduplication efficiency on non deduplicated Virtual Volumes, through the 3PAR CLI ?

Yes, the “-dedup_dryrun”, an option of the 3PAR CLI “CheckVV” command which is mainly used to execute validity checks of VV administration information, launches a dedup ratio calculation task in the background that analyzes the potential space savings with HPE 3PAR Deduplication technology if the VVs specified were in a same deduplication group. The VVs specified must be TPVVs only but they can reside on any type of drive not just SSDs.

This option is meant to show the space saving benefits of Thin Deduplication on existing data without the need to convert the volumes.

Further details in the 3PAR CLI Reference Guide 3.2.2. What are the minimum requirements to achieve High-Availability Cage (HA Cage) for both Raid5 and Raid6 on HPE 3PAR Arrays?

Note on terminology: HA Cage is called “Cage Level Availability” in the 3PAR User Interface. In 3PAR, the term “Cage” is equivalent to the terms “Drive enclosure”, “Enclosure”, and “Drive Shelf”.

Volumes with cage-level availability can tolerate the failure of a drive cage because its RAID sets use chunklets from different drive cages. Because of this enhanced resilience, HPE recommends cage-level availability whenever the system configuration allows.

To achieve HA cage for RAID 5, the number of drive cages per Node Pair must be equal to or larger than the setsize. For example setting RAID 5 (4+1) in HA Cage requires a minimum of 5 drive cages per Node Pair.

For RAID 6, we can tolerate the loss of two chunklets, meaning that for HA cage, the number of drive cages per Node Pair is half of the setsize. For example, setting RAID6 (4+2) in HA cage requires a minimum of 3 drive cages per Node Pair.

Do the 3 versions of the SAN Network Advisor Software provide a different set of features? HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor provides comprehensive management of data center fabrics-including configuration, monitoring, and management of all B-series Directors, Switches, and HBAs. It provides support for FC SANs with configuration, zoning, and visualization capabilities, including HBA, storage, SAN fabric, and Layer 2 switch topology views. SAN diagnostics help meet SLAs via proactive alerting and advanced SAN diagnostic capabilities, including SAN port diagnostics, bottleneck detection, and best-practices validation of SAN configurations. SAN Network Advisor is available in three types of bundles:

No-charge SAN Professional: Up to 300 switch ports, 2 fabrics, B-series Fabric OS only.

For-charge SAN Professional Plus: Up to 2560 switch ports and 36 fabrics.

For-charge SAN Enterprise: Up to 15000 switch ports and 100 fabrics. This bundle is required for B-series DC SAN Backbone Director, SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Director and FICON management.

HPE B-series SAN Network Advisor provides management of multiple 4Gb, 8Gb, and 16Gb B-series Directors, Switches, and HBAs. By measuring and displaying network performance, it provides the essential functions for efficiently configuring, monitoring, and dynamic provisioning of SAN fabrics.

The series supports 1023 IGMP entries (1013 dynamic filters + 10 static filters) Can you confirm the MAC Address Table size for the 5700 series? The MAC Address Table of 5700 series supports up to 64000 entries. Do we support load sharing based on MPLS labels in an aggregation bundle on 5500HI models? This scenario is not supported on 5500HI series. How many VLAN interfaces does the 1620 switch supports? The maximum number of VLAN interfaces that 1620 switch can support is 1. What is the IPS function of the MSR routers? The MSR’s Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is a piece of software that is integrated into the MSR branch routers to proactively detect and protect the branch office from internal and external security threats such as Worm, SQL Injection and so on. This piece of software is embedded in the router. The IPS functionality is applied once the firewall rules are completed. Users can select and specify traffic to do the detection and let safe traffic pass through directly. The filters define how to detect attacks. Customers select from hundreds of pre-defined filters. Options cover all the typical vulnerabilities and most of the 0-day attacks. The IPS Essentials Filter Service is responsible for keeping the filters updated. The Filter Service is offered as a 1-year subscription.
