CHRISTOPHER UHLE

They say that God works in mysterious ways. Well, I must say that losing my son has raised some questions inside me regarding God’s motives. Christopher had a life a person

could only dream of having. And it would have been easy for him to become caught up in the glory that was his life. But he didn’t. He was grounded. He was filled with respect for his fellow man. He was perfect in every way. Why then would his life’s story end at twenty-two years of age?

Two weeks after I held Christopher in my arms for the last time I felt the need to do something to take my mind off of the bottomless pit of emotions only someone who has lost a child can understand. I decided to go fishing. I planned on going alone to the serene backwater shallows at the mouth of the Withlacoochee River in the Gulf of Mexico in my boat. Something I’d done many times before. But Alisa, my wife, insisted I bring a friend along. She was uncomfortable with the notion of me being on the water without backup should I fall into the water.

My first call was to a friend of mine named Zach. He’s a highly experienced boatman and diver. An obvious choice. He accepted, and we were off first thing the following Thursday morning. The day of fishing started with an immediate catch of an undersized redfish. Then, nothing. Not even a catfish. Fast forward a few hours, both of us bored and willing to go after sharks for the sake of reeling at least something in before we left for home, we headed out to the open water about two miles off shore. A spot that I’d caught plenty of sharks while attempting to tangle with a Cobia, one of my favorite catches and meals.

We dropped anchor to the sea floor fifteen feet below us and began preparing to wet our lines. Looking off to the south west we noticed a storm brewing about ten miles away. The direction the clouds overhead were moving indicated that we didn’t have long to fish before the storm was upon us. It was nice to feel the first hit, although I missed the hookset. It wasn’t so nice to hear the thunder from the approaching storm. The next mullet I lowered to the bottom scored a Cobia! It was a small one. But, with the small rod and reel I was using it took five minutes or so to bring it aboard.

Thunder again. Zach and I laughed nervously at how much the rules of safety change when the fish are biting. There’s Cobia down there. We can afford to wait a few more minutes before we run inshore to safety from the approaching thunderstorm that has more than tripled in size.

“Did you hear that? It sounds like someone’s yelling.” Zach asked between the rumbles of thunder. About four hundred yards to the west a boat sat anchored. Surely it was people fishing for Cobia like us. I thought I might have heard something that sounded like someone calling out. We decided to reel up our bait for the last time and check it out before heading in. Zach’s rod bent as he began his retrieval. A Cobia? If it is we would have to face the possibility of cutting the line. The storm was too close to wait out another fight. We both took a deep sigh of relief to see a flounder on his hook. A quick picture and then off to ensure the wellbeing of the fishermen on the distant boat. The storm growing closer and bigger all the while.

As we approached the small craft we struggled to spot the inhabitants on board. Getting closer we realized that there was no one to be seen on the boat. Behind the boat another two hundred yards or so something was floating in the water. Small, round, and pale. And it had an arm waving at us! Someone had fallen out of their boat and was being swept away in the outgoing tide! We made our way toward the bobbing head at a brisk pace. The seas were gaining in size as the storm was all but upon us.

The man in the water had taken off his shoes to make treading water more possible. He was bobbing up and down with his face pointed toward the sky. In and out of the water his face went as he struggled to stay on the surface. Zach reached down and grabbed Eddy by the arm. Eddy was panic stricken and spent of energy at the same time. That’s a sight to see. He had to remain in the water for about a minute to regain the strength to raise his leg high enough for Zach to grab and bring him aboard the sixteen foot Stratus bass boat.

On 6/30/16 Pennsylvania’s State Senators unanimously voted 49-0 for HB 1947. Their vote came only after their own Senate Judiciary Committee first amended the State House version sent to them for consideration and greatly op-

posed by PA Catholic Bishops and others who protested the House version as an unjust law -- seriously biased and grossly unfair to institutions and abuse victims alike.

Senators removed civil “Retroactivity” provisions fiercely opposed by many as simply “unfair” and by many oth-ers as also “unconstitutional”, i.e. not in compliance with the PA State Constitution's “Remedies Clause”. Legal experts testified that the retroactivity provisions are almost certainly “Unconstitutional” as previously detailed here. Following here is a PA Catholic Conference Report (6/30/16) on the Senate’s actions to amend the Bill before giving it to all Senators, who passed it and sent it back to the House of Representatives for “Concurrence”. At this time, we understand that the House will reconsider the now amended HB1947 bill after Labor Day. With an 8-4 vote the PA Senate Judiciary Committee amended Hoouse Bill 1947 bill to strip a provision that would retroactively nullify the civil statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse cases from decades ago. The committee cited conflicts with PA’s state constitution as its reason for the change. The committee kept a provision to prospectively eliminate any criminal statute of limitations. The amendment prospectively allows abuse survivors to sue either public or private entities under an equal standard of proof until they reach age 50, and allows survivors to sue in certain cases beyond age 50. The PA Catholic Conference is reviewing all details of the amended bill to determine what impact it may have.

In a statement, the PCC reiterated that no matter the final resolution of the legislation, the Catholic Church will keep its sincere commitment to the emotional and spiritual well-being of individuals who have been impact-ed by the crime of childhood sexual abuse, no matter how long ago the crime was committed. No institution is more acutely aware of the harm, pain and anger caused by child sexual abuse than the Roman Catholic Church. The Church has repeatedly acknowledged its past mistakes and its role in the ongoing suffering experienced by survivors and their loved ones. For more than a decade, the Catholic community has consistently enforced strict safe environment policies and offered assistance to survivors and their families. While recognizing and respecting that every individual must take his or her own personal journey to heal, the Church is committed to offering assistance.

All survivors of abuse are offered assistance no matter how long ago the crime occurred. Each diocese has trained and deployed professional victim assistance staff to provide a response that is compassionate, supportive, and sensitive to the needs of survivors. Every diocese has an Office for Victim/Survivor Assistance, which provides a range of support, including:

Counseling and other forms of therapy for survivors and their families Addressing barriers to participation in therapy, such as child care and transportation Vocational assistance Resources about child sexual abuse support services in the community Financial assistance for medication Referrals and payments for outpatient therapy and related psychiatric services Assessment and case management assistance for social services resources Pastoral support and counseling Facilitation of meetings with the Archbishop or Bishop

To date, PA’s dioceses have spent more than $ 16.6 million on victim/survivor assistance services to provide compassionate support to individuals and families. Tens of millions more has been negotiated in financial settlements with survivors who sought that resolution. We will continue to offer support and assistance as long as it is needed.

FROM THE PASTOR: CHRISTOPHER UHLE Cont. from p. 2

Eddy was fishing by himself. Preparing to head in, he reached over to retrieve his chum bucket. His feet slipped and he fell head long into the water. The current was moving quickly enough that he was unable to swim fast enough to get back to his boat. He gave it a hell of an effort though. Such an effort that by the time he realized that he couldn’t swim that fast he had little energy remaining to tread water.

God does work in mysterious ways. You see, if I hadn’t felt the need to do something to relieve the stress and pain I was feeling, if the fish were biting in my favorite spot, if I hadn’t hooked a Cobia, if Zach hadn’t heard Eddy’s faint voice crying out from so far away.

If my son hadn’t lost his life, Eddy surely would have lost his.
