Off-Grid Solar System

In most off-grid applications, solar power will be harnessed as DC power and stored into a battery bank to support the power demands. Since solar is not always able to supply all the power demands, a generator is almost always incorporated to supplement the energy provided by solar and to provide backup power.

A typical Combi Series off-grid solar system would be something like this:

Applications

Hybrid Off-Grid Solar System

For larger systems, or where the majority of daytime loads are using AC power, it is often more efficient to directly convert solar power into AC, using the Rich Electric Solarworx Grid Inverter. The Solarworx grid inverter supplies AC power to the 240V loads, and the excess is used to recharge the batteries. When the load exceeds the power delivered

power output. When the batteries become fully charged, the Combi Series will then tell the Solarworx to shutdown via the Combi-Net communication cable.

The Solarworx grid inverter does need a “grid” supply to synchronise to, which is provided by the Combi Series

some distance from the batteries, for example in a remote home where the solar panels need to be installed on the

away. In these applications, converting the solar directly to AC power eliminates the need to run excessively large DC cabling a long distance from the solar panels to the batteries.

Hybrid Grid-Connected Solar System

In some other applications, grid power may already be available to some extent. This grid power may be unstable, unreliable, or perhaps the intention of the hybrid system is to minimise use of grid supplied power to be as self-sufficient as possible or to maximise solar feed-in tariff to the grid; whatever the application, a Combi Series

since the system is utilising the Solarworx grid inverter, excess power can be put back into the grid, and a “feed-in” tarrif paid to the household*.

SolarWorx Grid Inverter - 2kW

A multi-purpose grid-inverter capable of working either directly from solar panel input, or from a battery input that is charged by renewable sources - making it suitable for solar, as well as wind and hydro renewable energy. When matched with a Combi Series interactive inverter-charger, the Solarworx grid-inverter allows for hybrid system functionality.

Remote Control Panel

In most installations, the Combi inverter and battery bank will be

building, where it is inconvenient to view the current status of the power system. By using the remote control panel, a complete replica

a more convenient location inside the property, giving full control and monitoring without having to venture out to wherever the Combi unit is installed.

Battery Temperature Sensor

An absolute must for any installation, and cheap insurance against damage to the very expensive battery bank. Installing the battery temp sensor tells the Combi what temperature the battery is operating at, so that the Combi can adjust charging voltage and current accordingly, to avoid permanent damage to the batteries. Batteries do get hot under heave loads, so it is important to adjust charging accordingly.
