The following letter and "contract" were receive.] by Niles CharnpHn, oue of Whitman county's prosperous farmers, who resides near Almota. The com- munication speaks for itself. It speak- ing to The Gazette, Mr Champliu said: "I call this a Bret class graft. If you thiok so, and its worth the while, pub- lish it." To every appearance the letter ami "contract" are fraud*, written to deceive. If th'i alleged Johnson were oble to do as be claims, he would take a different method of protecting his "sec- ret;" if be were honest in his every in- tention he would have printed contract* in duplicate. It is not necessary to comment upou bin ability to teach a person how to "convert one pound of milk into one pound of good butter without the use of chemicles or drugs," The ordinary housewife probably has forgotten more about butter making than this alleged Johnson ever knew. Here is the letter and "contract:" Remsen, Dec. 30, 1903, Mr. Niles Champlin, Almota, Wash.— Dear Sir: If you are interested in hutt"? n.iikiug, you should have our new process, for we do exactly as we state iv our contract and in about five minutes. So you cinnot afford to be without it and as our charges are reason- j able, you shouid not wait, for there is money ] in butter for you. Send express or postal j money order, with contract signed. Hoping j to hear from you soon, we remain, respect- j fully, .1. J. Johnson, Box 39, Kemsen, lowa. of Waverly, Texas, writes: "Of a morn- ing, when first arising, I often find a I troublesome collection of phlegm, ; which produces a cough and is i very hard to dislodge; but a email i quantity of Ballard's Horehouud Syrop ; will at once dislodge it, aud the trouble iis over. I know of no medicine that is I equal to it, and it is so pleasant to take. | I can most cordially recommend it to all persons needing a medicine for ! throat or lung trouble." 25c, 50c and i $ 1.00 Sold by Elk Drug Store, Colfax o ' 1 am now prepared to do all kinds of land business, homestead entries and proofs, contests, etc. Have had 25 years experience in land cases. J ,? of Utf^T^^ ENGINEERS AT WORK Running Preliminary Lines for Whitman Electric Railway. Will Traverse Entire length of Col- fax—Power House at Bbawnee Kirns to l'alouhi' Engineers started work Tuesday on the preliminary survey for the line of the Whitman Electric Railway Company, which will extend from Colfai to Pa- louse. The work is under the direction of Engineer Harold Uoolitrle, who hnn n party of ten with him. It is expected that the preliminary survey will be com pleted by the cud of next week and that work on the permanent survey will be taken up within a short tiir:e. Engineer Do tlittle, 1. B. Sarris and John Hart went over the route of the proposed line Monday. When work started Tuesday morning the surveyors made the first setting; f ,t the Morton street bridge across the North Palouee river in the north end of Colfax. From that point they followed the entire ieiintli of Morton street t.> First street, where tlie.v turned west and ran to Mciiu street. From that point a line \v;is run the en- tire length of Main street to a point at the junction with Fairview street. From that junction the line was run on Fair- view street to the city limits in the south end of town. At the point where the proposed line will leave the city limitn, a survey was run along the county road to a point near Slmwnee. Prom that point the line will follow county roads to Palouee City. It is now the intention of the promoters to eHtabliwh their power house at Shawnee, which is about half way be- tween Colfax f»nd Palonse. isy doing that they will do away with the neces- sity of installing transformer** aud will thereby save considerable power which would otherwise be lost. Mr. Harris, the promoter of the pro- posed line, is very enthusiastic over the outlook aud says that the road will certainly be bniit; that the money for its construction ie now almost assured and that they hope to begin actual con struction within a very few weeks. Tbis line will mean much to Colfax and Pa- louse, as it will give both cities rail con- nections with the Northern Pacific and 0. R &N. roads. Colfax people will be able then to secure freight shipments over the>Northern Pacific and residents of Palouse will receive the same accom- modation over the O. H. <fc N. As Pa- louse is growing to be one of the best towns in eastern Washington the elec- tric line will be inestimable value to her, as well as to Colfax. The First $5 Bill. This if also true in regard to Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. It was introduced fifty yours ago. and because it positively cures stomach, live? •knd bowel disorders it is valued more highly chan any other remedy. Those who have one- tried it always keep a bottle on hand to cure dyspepsia, nausea, indigestion, dizziness, heartburn, insomnia, chills, colds or malaria. Will One Pound of Milk Make OnePound of Good Butter?

The following letter and "contract"were receive.] by Niles CharnpHn, oue ofWhitman county's prosperous farmers, who resides near Almota. The com-munication speaks for itself. It speak-ing to The Gazette, Mr Champliu said:"I call this a Bret class graft. If youthiok so, and its worth the while, pub-lish it." To every appearance the letterami "contract" are fraud*, written todeceive. If th'i alleged Johnson wereoble to do as be claims, he would take adifferent method of protecting his "sec-ret;" if be were honest in his every in-tention he would have printed contract*in duplicate. It is not necessary tocomment upou bin ability to teach aperson how to "convert one pound ofmilk into one pound of good butterwithout the use of chemicles or drugs,"The ordinary housewife probably hasforgotten more about butter makingthan this alleged Johnson ever knew. Here is the letter and "contract:"

Remsen, Dec. 30, 1903,Mr. Niles Champlin, Almota, Wash.—

Dear Sir: If you are interested in hutt"?n.iikiug, you should have our new process, forwe do exactly as we state iv our contract andin about five minutes. So you cinnot affordto be without itand as our charges are reason- jable, you shouid not wait, for there is money ]in butter for you. Send express or postal jmoney order, with contract signed. Hoping jto hear from you soon, we remain, respect- jfully, .1. J. Johnson,

ENGINEERS AT WORKRunning Preliminary Lines for

Whitman Electric Railway.

Will Traverse Entire length of Col-fax—Power House at Bbawnee

Kirns to l'alouhi'

Engineers started work Tuesday onthe preliminary survey for the line of theWhitman Electric Railway Company, which will extend from Colfai to Pa-louse. The work is under the directionof Engineer Harold Uoolitrle, who hnnn party of ten with him. It is expectedthat the preliminary survey will be completed by the cud of next week and thatwork on the permanent survey will betaken up within a short tiir:e.

Engineer Do tlittle, 1. B. Sarris andJohn Hart went over the route of theproposed line Monday. When workstarted Tuesday morning the surveyorsmade the first setting; f,t the Mortonstreet bridge across the North Paloueeriver in the north end of Colfax. Fromthat point they followed the entire ieiintliof Morton street t.> First street, wheretlie.v turned west and ran to Mciiu street. From that point a line \v;is run the en-tire length of Main street to a point atthe junction with Fairview street. Fromthat junction the line was run on Fair-view street to the city limits in thesouth end of town.

At the point where the proposed linewill leave the city limitn, a survey wasrun along the county road to a pointnear Slmwnee. Prom that point theline will follow county roads to PaloueeCity. It is now the intention of thepromoters to eHtabliwh their power houseat Shawnee, which is about half way be-tween Colfax f»nd Palonse. isy doingthat they will do away with the neces-sity of installing transformer** aud willthereby save considerable power whichwould otherwise be lost.

Mr. Harris, the promoter of the pro-posed line, is very enthusiastic over theoutlook aud says that the road willcertainly be bniit; that the money forits construction ie now almost assuredand that they hope to begin actual construction within a very few weeks. Tbisline will mean much to Colfax and Pa-louse, as it will give both cities rail con-nections with the Northern Pacific and0. R &N. roads. Colfax people will beable then to secure freight shipmentsover the>Northern Pacific and residentsof Palouse will receive the same accom-modation over the O. H. <fc N. As Pa-louse is growing to be one of the besttowns in eastern Washington the elec-tric line will be inestimable value to her,as well as to Colfax.
