The boat’s interior was fully involved in flames. Crewmembers used a pre-connected hose line to extinguish the blaze and contain the fire to the boat. There were no reported injuries. Cause is undeter- mined and under investigation. The triple-helix tracks in the- photograph is the roller coaster “Scenic Railway” that thrilled visi- tors at the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition across the bay in San Francisco. Lamarcus Thompson designed this ride for the exposition. During his lifetime the prolific Thompson designed and built some 31 roller coasters. Strehlow and his partners pur- chased Thompson’s creation com- plete with its Green Dragon and Red Dragon cars. They loaded it kit and kaboodle onto a barge and transported it across San Francisco Bay to the side of the old Neptune Gardens amusement park. When they discovered that they didn’t have the space to lay out the ride in its original L-shaped configuration they twisted it into a triple helix. This ride, along with the enitre park, was uncerrmoniously sold off for pennies on the dollar. (One story relates that a junk dealer purchased the Red Devil cars for just $60. MacKay Avenue was laid down on the Scenic Railway’s old foot- print. All that remains of this thrill- ing ride can be seen at the Alameda Museum. The next time you’re on MacKay Avenue be quiet and listen. You just might hear the screams of the riders on this masterpiece from a bygone era. This ride was so popular that Strehlow added a second roller coaster to his amusement park. See page 3 and learn how Strehlow transformed this smaller version of Neptune Beach into a larger affair.
