come are futuro

“… BUT RATHER AN EXTENSION”BY GASTINI, ICARO, MATTIACCI, SPAGNULOIn 1945, Arturo Martini entrusted his book “La scultura lingua morta” (“Sculpture: a dead language”) - a sort of manifesto-shaped testament and will – “his hope for a rebirth” of the arts. It represented a heartfelt encouragement to push the boundaries of matter, re-presentation and style, and to move the sculptural language toward unexplored areas. “Make me an arch of the spirit. Make me no longer rock, but rather wa-ter and sky. Make me no longer matter, but rather extension”. This encourage-ment was taken by younger generations of artistes who have been working after the Second World War. Among whom, Marco Gastini, Paolo Icaro, Eliseo
Mattiacci and Giuseppe Spagnulo, four leading figures in the contemporary art scene, to whom the Galleria Interna-zionale d’Arte Moderna (International Modern Art Gallery) of Ca’ Pesaro, in Venice, dedicated the exhibition “…ma un’estensione” (“… but rather an extension”), curated by Bruno Corà and organized within the Muve Contempo-raneo, in the framework of the Biennale Art. In their poetic-expressive analo-gies and differences, the four artistes managed to free themselves from those restrictions stated by Martini, attuning with the frequencies of a transdiscipli-nary freedom, where the boundaries between painting and sculpture are blurring, and where the artwork dialo-gues with the surrounding space and with the public, thus reaching a global, archetypical dimension. Precisely beyond the matter, between water and sky”… (F.M.)

MONET.

MONET. FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF MUSÉE D’ORSAY
It must not be confused with previous and namesake artworks by Édouard Manet, largely criticized by conformists. “Le déjeuner sur l’herbe” by Claude Monet represents, within the artistic evolution of the French master, his turning point toward Impressionism. The majestic paintwork, whose calm and elegant “en plein air” composition is characterized by strong light contrasts and bright colors, should have been displayed at Salon in 1866, but its author, maybe conscious of how inno-vative this project was, left it partially unfinished because of the problems he met during its creation. In addition to this, the painting was pledged by Monet to the house owner of the flat in which he lived. After twenty-two years he ma-naged to ransom it, noticed its terrible conservation status, therefore decided to cut it, saving just three scraps. Two of these have been added to the collection of Musée d’Orsay in Paris, while the third has mysteriously disappeared. No-wadays the central scrap of this early-impressionist masterpiece is displayed at the exhibition “Monet. From the col-lections of the Musée d’Orsay”, curated by Guy Cogeval, Xavier Rey and Virginia Bertone, organized and promoted by the municipality of Turin and by Skira Editore Publishing House. The exhibition includes over forty artworks created by this undisputed master of modern art, among which stand out the portrait “Madame Louis Joachim Gaudibert”, the symbolic “Essai de figure en plein air: Femme à l’ombrelle tournée vers la droite”, the vivid “La rue Montergueil, à Paris. Fête du 30 juin 1878”, up to the two unforgettable versions of the Rouen Cathedral: “Le portail, temps gris” and “Le portail et la tour Saint-Romain, plein soleil”. (F.M.)

ANTHONY MCCALL. Back (2003), Mee-ting You Halfway (2009), Line Describing a Cone 2.0. (P.M.)

The Solid Light Works created by Anthony McCall are installations of light which must be necessarily displayed in dark spaces, where the observer is surrounded by the darkness as at cinema, with the only difference that, here, he/she is free to move and take actively part in the installation artwork. The exhibit, expressly conceived by the artist for the exhibition area in the basement of the Art Museum of Italian Switzerland, is split into four Solid Light Works - digital, horizontal projections, fulfilled between 2003 and 2013: Dou-bling Back (2003), Meeting You Halfway (2009), Line Describing a Cone 2.0. (1973/2010), and the double projection Face to Face (2013). These artworks perfectly highlight the multifaceted character of Anthony McCall: drawing, movies, sculptures and performances combine together and contaminate each other. In the Lugano’s venue, it will be displayed the digital version of his most popular analogical artwork, Line Describing a Cone, 1973, where a white light beam gradually draws a circle:

VISIONI URBANE
URBAN VISIONS
TAUNS 2015 is the new exhibition developed by Franco Purini, promoted by the Architecture Department of the Federico II University of Naples. The exhibition, set up in the halls of Palazzo Gravina, curated by Federica Visconti and Renato Capozzi, is part of the wider setting of the 29th edition of FuturoRemoto (“Remote future”), set up for the first time by Fondazione Città della Scienza (Science City Foundation), in cooperation with the University of Naples. Well-known for his architectural
works – the last, in chronological order, is the Eurosky Tower in Rome – for his academic activities – he is professor emeritus at the Sapienza University of Rome – Purini has always juxtaposed to his multifarious activities a continuous reflection on the city, by linking it to the issue of the metropolitan burst in contemporary societies. The exhibition consists of 11 Indian ink drawings: these are perfect, golden rectangles expressly commissioned by DiARC, in some archetypical principles of the
urban settlement are analyzed. These firstly-installed, original paradigms – not by chance he drew 11 planks, i.e. the first prime number which enigmatically, twice embraces the unity, the identical thing, the origin – are placed betwe-en the two poles of part and scrap, defining, according to Purini, elements which are “not simply unitary, but also able to make this unity the key-element of their architectural identity. They have some typical features such as consistent components, a balanced dimension, and
a multi-shaped structure organization, where different functional and formal levels live together”. (E.D.M.)

DECONSTRUCTION. IL RECUPERO DEI MATE-RIALI DA COSTRUZIONE
DECONSTRUCTION. RECOVERING BUILDING MATERIALS
What is the role of architecture in the use of materials from building sites and demolitions? What is the legislation on reuse? The 2005 established Rotor or-ganization, realizes architecture and in-terior design projects and, at the same time, is developing an in-depth analysis on design, material resources and the idea of waste, through researches, exhi-bitions, publications and conferences. In Liege, on the occasion of Triennale of Design ‘Reciprocity 2015”, until No-vember the 1st has been displayed the exhibition “Deconstruction”, where im-portant issues have been analyzed: the relationship between the cost of labor
and materials in Europe; or the complex bonds between the architect and the industry of materials; or, finally, more romantic subjects such as the personal tastes or the choice of the colors. What could have been the best fra-mework for this exhibit? Of course, the theater of the Athénée Léonie de Waha modernist school, exceptional herita-ge of Wallonia in 1999, built between 1936-1938 by architect Jean Moutschen. On stage, theatrically-lighted building materials, waste materials from building sites often destined to be thrown away. The project aims at offering a new vision on a little-known field, displaying some alternative, rich in contents and edu-cational techniques, which will open a debate, and will offer a reshape of the “big highways” (or of “dead rails”), in connection with the saving of materials.

This book describes the urban tran-sformation and change of the center of Milan, the Porta Nuova district, an represents an occasion for experi-menting with innovative ideas, while reshaping the urban landscapes of Milan. Milan Porta Nuova illustrates the process of definition of the area in all its stages, and collects the voices of the different subjects involved in the project – promoters, developers, public managers, and designers who worked on the site: from Cesar Pelli to Stefano Boeri, to Kpf studio, just to mention the
authors of the three Garibaldi, Isola and Varesine masterplans. Through a series of “macro-sections” (Porta Nuova as an urban workshop; A tale for Porta Nuova: an essay told in pictures by Gabriele Basilico; Dealing with the roughness of transformation; The Porta Nuova building site; Living the Italian style; The Masterplans; The public spaces in Porta Nuova; Porta Nuova Isola district; Working on the boarder with Porta Nuova; One Day in Porta Nuova; People in Porta Nuova), the book describes in a very detailed and technical manner, the fundamental transformational path of the city of Milan, which is increasingly becoming a reference point among Eu-ropean and International development models.
