Hanging Gardens of Babylon❖ Date of Construction: 600 BC❖ Builders: Babylonians/ Assyrians ❖ Modern Location: HIllah or Nineveh

Iraq❖ The gardens were up to 75 feet high

and it is thought that the plants tumbled down over a kind of pyramid-shaped stone structure.

❖ Some say they were just a legend.❖ Although archaeologists have looked,

no one has yet found any archaeological proof that they really did exist

Hagia Sophia (a church in Istanbul, Turkey) are thought to have been originally part of the Temple of Artemis

Statue of Zeus at Olympia ❖ Date of Construction: 435 BC (statue)❖ Builder: Greeks ❖ Modern Location: Olympia, Greece ❖ Date of destruction:5/6th century AD❖ It was destroyed by a fire ❖ The statue was constructed with a

wooden frame and then was covered in ivory and gold panels. The exposed skin of the statue was ivory and the accessories such as robe, shoes, hair and beard were made from gold. The eyes of the statue were even made from precious jewels!

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus❖ Date of Construction: 351 BC❖ Builder: Greeks, Persians, Carians ❖ Modern Location: Bodrum, Turkey ❖ Date of destruction: 12/15th century AD❖ It was destroyed by earthquakes ❖ Famous for its great beauty. It was

almost square shaped, over 164 feet (50 meters) high and featured ionic columns (a Greek style of column with spiral scrolls) to hold up a pyramid roof. At the very top, there was a large statue of Mausolus and Artemisia in a chariot pulled by four horses.

helping ships to safely enter the port, while a mirror was used by day to reflect the sunlight

❖ Ruins of the Lighthouse of Alexandria have been discovered underwater and the site is to be preserved as a museum of ancient Alexandria and its lighthouse.
