‘This is a great mystery...’ (Ephesians 5:32) Have you ever had someone tell you something and you think (or say out loud), “Come on” or “Are you kidding me?” or “You can’t be serious” or “Are you out of your mind?” When someone says something so outlandish or improberable that you find it really hard to believe... That’s where we’re at this week. As Jesus finishes his ‘Bread of Life Discourse,’ a bunch of the followers of Jesus give a collective “Huh?!” and admit that what Jesus was saying was hard to understand and even accept. Put yourself in their shoes: Jesus has just told them that for them to live forever, they need to eat his flesh and drink his blood. That’s not something one hears every day, and when you think about it, it’s actually kind of shocking to hear. This even causes many of his disciples to stop following him out of disbelief. So how are we doing in our own belief department? Thankfully, Jesus left us with the gift of the Eucharist and the holy sacrifice of the Mass. We are truly blessed to have every opportunity to receive his body and blood. But do we truly appreciate this gift? Do we truly believe or do we take everything in a literal sense and miss the point all together? As we enter the dog days of summer, let’s take a moment to appreciate the mystery of faith. ‘This is a great mystery...’ (Ephesians 5:32)

Have you ever had someone tell you something and you think (or say out loud), “Come on” or

“Are you kidding me?” or “You can’t be serious” or “Are you out of your mind?” When

someone says something so outlandish or improberable that you fi nd it really hard to believe... That’s where we’re at this week.

As Jesus fi nishes his ‘Bread of Life Discourse,’ a bunch of the followers of Jesus give a collective “Huh?!” and admit that what Jesus was saying was hard to understand and even accept. Put

yourself in their shoes: Jesus has just told them that for them to live forever, they need to eat his

fl esh and drink his blood. That’s not something one hears every day, and when you think about

it, it’s actually kind of shocking to hear. This even causes many of his disciples to stop

following him out of disbelief.

So how are we doing in our own belief department? Thankfully, Jesus left us with the gift of the Eucharist and the holy sacrifi ce of the Mass. We are truly blessed to have every

opportunity to receive his body and blood. But do we truly appreciate this gift? Do we truly believe or do we take everything in a literal

sense and miss the point all together?

As we enter the dog days of summer, let’s take a moment to appreciate the mystery of faith.

From Fr. Steve... Dear Family,“Do you also want to leave?” This is the question that Jesus asks of His disciples in our Gospel Reading today. This weekend we finish the Bread of Life discourse from John’s Gospel. Jesus has just finished telling those present that He was going to leave behind His Body and Blood and if anyone wanted to enter into eternal life, they must eat His Flesh and drink His Blood (this is the part we did not hear last week due to the Solemnity of the Assumption, but I know you all read it on your own!) John tells us that many of the people walk away from following Jesus and return to their former ways. Jesus then turns to His closest friends and asks them if they were leaving too. The disciples said they were staying as they were convinced that He was the Son of God. Jesus, you should note, did not stop anyone from leaving. He did not say to them that He was just using hyperbole. He did not tell them they misunderstood. Jesus was adamant that He meant what He said. We must consume His Body and Blood if we dare hope for eternal life. This is the core of our belief in the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It is not a symbol! Jesus states outright that the Eucharist is His Body and Blood. So Jesus asks the same question of us! “Do you also want to leave?” So many have turned away. Many of our sisters and brothers in Christ were never taught properly about the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist or it was too hard of a teaching to accept. We all have relatives who have stopped attending Mass. We are being called to catechize! God is asking us to bring those who are fallen away back to the practice of their faith. Think about this; If someone truly believed that Jesus is present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist, would they ever be able to walk away? Wouldn’t they be so eager to get in that the churches would be full to capacity? May that happen someday soon!

Praised Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!!!

Father Steve

From Bishop Mike... “The Diocese is fully focused on fulfilling what this process initiated by the Child Victims Act is all about, namely, bringing about a sense of restitution, closure and healing for those who were

abused by members of the clergy. This is a tragedy of truly epic proportions and as I have maintained since day one as bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, it is of paramount importance to deal with these allegations forthrightly and to work to repair the enormous damage that has been done

not only to the reputation of the Church here in Western New York, but most importantly to the lives of those affected.

“The process now continues and will be a protracted one as we work through the legal

requirements with the court-appointed creditors’ committee, which of course includes abuse survivors. We will also be working with the various insurance carriers of the Diocese as we

address the financial implications of these many claims. It is my hope and fervent prayer – and I know the hope of many of the Faithful across our Diocese – that we can move forward and

ultimately bring a close to this very painful and sordid chapter which in no way obscures the tremendous good accomplished each and every day by our Church and those who live faithfully

the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”– Bishop Michael W. Fisher
