Smart India Hackathon 2018

Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Guwahati

hosted the grand Finale of Hackathon 2018 on 30 and 31 March. 39 teams all over

India coded vigorously for 36 hour to solve 10 problem statements identified by the

Ministry of State for Tribal Affairs.

The inauguration programme of the SIH began at 7.30 am on march 30 with

the presence of Shri Sumnabhai Bhabhor, Hon’ble Minister of State for Tribal Affairs,

as the Chief Guest; Dr. Mridul Hazarika, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Gauhati

University, as the Guest of Honor along with other dignitaries : Ms Krishna Gohain,

Director of Directorate of Technical Education; Mr Ratul Das, President, Shrimanta

Shankar Academy; and Dr. Sushanta Kumar Dutta, the Principal of Girijananda

Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology.

Smart India Hackathon is a path breaking addition to the history of science and technology in India. GIMT

Guwahati is the only nodal centre in the North East and the event was for the second time. There were 39 teams from

Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur, Tamilnadu, Andra Pradesh, Maharastra, Jharkhand, Gujarat, etc joined Hackathon 2018. In

this tough competition team Tech Aces from Devi Ahilya Viswavidyalya, Madya Pradesh emerged as the winner.

Team Ciphers from Oriental Institute of Science and Technology, Madhya Pradesh and team UVPCE01 from U. V.

Patel College of Engineering, Gujarat won the second and third

prize respectively. The first three tree teams were awarded with Rs 1

lakh, Rs 75000 and Rs 50000 respectively. Apart from this, three

more teams won three special prizes: team TORNADOES

(Puduchery) won KPIT Award; team The fine Fettles (Rajasthan)

won Deloitte Innovation Award ; and team Educational Guider won

Persistent Award.

The Valedictory function was held at 8.00 pm on 31 March. The

chief Guest for the programme was Sri Pallab Lochan Das, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Tea Tribes

Welfare, Revenue and Disaster Management, Power, Labour Welfare, Govt, of Assam. The guest of honor was Shri

Rajiv Kumar Bora, Addl Chief secretary, Welfare of lain Tribes and Backward Classes Department. Shri Rajesh

Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, MoTA and Dr Ajeet Singh, Asst Director, AICTE were also present in the ceremony.

Industrial visit to Karbi Langpi Hydro electric plant

The department of Apllied Elecetronics and Instrumentation organised an

industrial visit to Karbi Langpi Hydro electric plant, Karbi Anglong on 16th

March 2018 for the 4th, 6th and 8th semester students. The plant is one of the

generating station of APGCL. There were 30 students for the visit and were

accompanied by three faculty members. The authorities of the plant at first took

the students and the faculty members to their guest house for refreshment after a

long tedious journey. They were then

taken to the Dam site. The students

were shown various parts of the Dam

and its operation was explained. After

that the students and faculty members were taken to the generator station located

downhill. In the generator station, various units of the plant like the generators, valves,

control station, instruments for the measurement and control of parameters were

shown. After the visit, at the generating station, the students and faculty members were

taken to the guest house, to meet the higher authorities of the Karbi Langpi Hydro

electric plant. The authorities explained them about the administrative units of the

plant. They also encouraged the students to work hard and appear for the recruitment

exams of APGCL, so that they can get the opportunity to work in a challenging environment. The faculty members and the

students also thanked the authorities of the plant for giving them the opportunity to visit the plant.

Events

Industrial visit to Omega Eletronics, Rajasthan

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organised an

industrial visit to Omega Electronics (A leading manufacturer and exporter of

Educational Training Scientific Equipment and Lab Practical Equipment. It is

the foremost exporter to South East Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America

and Africa. OMEGA is registered with N.S.I.C. (National Small Industries

Corporation Limited) 2013 – A Government of India Enterprises.) at Jaipur,

Rajasthan on 8th January 2018 for the 8th semester students. The industry has

permitted the students and faculties to visit its factory. The authorities of the

factory explained every instrument and its working demonstration to the

students and the faculties. There were 16 students for the visit and were

accompanied by two faculty members.

FDP on "Behavioral Remodeling for enhancing the classroom Delivery of Teachers"

This Faculty Development Program held from 21 - 26 May, 2018 in association

with Electronics, Information and communications technology (EICT) - IIT

Guwahati and Department of CSE GIMT, Guwahati. It provided a thoughtful

example of how a teacher or an educator should behave towards their students in

order to stimulate an active learning environment throughout the classes by using

the teaching strategies such as tone of voice and other sounds occurring during

the speech act and non-verbal cues like gestures, facial expressions, body

language, eye contact, clothing, etc.

Mr. Anjan Chowdhury, Founder Managing Director, Indian Skill Academy and

Empanelled Member, E&ICT Academy, IIT Guwahati has been invited as an

expert. The FDP has been participated by a total of 46 participants of which 13

participants are faculty members from other colleges.

Workshop on Android App Testing

This hand-on session was only for GIMT students so that they can

learn basic idea of Android App Testing. On this one day

workshop, Mr. Birshu sarma, CSE of Katreng Technologies and Ex

TCSian was invited as key technical person and he had explained

about the Software testing with related Android App testing and

trained the students about test cases generation and explained its

practical impact.

WORKSHOP ON ANDROID APP DEVELOPMENT

Workshop on Android app development was held on 26th, 27th and 28th of

July 2018 for faculty and staff of CSE department organized by Dept of

Computer Science, GIMT so that they can learn latest software required for

Android app development. Mr Birshu Sarma, Director of Kareng

Technologies came as a Resource Person. Faculty and staff learnt how to

develop Android applications.

Three-day Workshop on "Big Data Analytics using Hadoop "

A Three-day Workshop was organized on 06th – 08th September, 2018 in association with Bennett University, India,

and leadingindia.ai. The goal of this workshop is to provide the participants with hands-on experiences on analyzing

Big-data, installing Hadoop and running examples on Hadoop framework. A total of 36 participants have joined the

Workshop; 32 participants are members from GIMT, Guwahati and 4 participants are from other colleges.

scheme of MHRD, New Delhi,

on 19-23 March,2018.

Marathon 2018

Girijananda Chowdhury Group of Institutions, Azara, Guwahati organized a half Marathon today on 20th January 2018, starting

from the Institute campus covering a distance of around 14 km via LGB Airport Borjhar on the occasion of Annual fest

EUPHUISM 2018 of the Institute. The marathon is an initiative of the institute towards the theme ‘EUNONIA’ meaning creation

of a beautiful world. It is an initiative to create awareness and enthusiasm among

the masses and youths in particular towards sports and a healthy society. The

marathon was flagged off by Mr. Ratul Das, President, Shrimanta Shankar

Academy and graced by renouned International Fighter, Mr Bhabajeet

Chowdhury, World ranked 4 and Captain of Gujrat Warrior in Super Fight

League. More than 400 sports enthusiasts from all North-Eastern states of all age

groups participated in the event and was highly appreciated. The winners of the

events for boys: the first position was bagged by Mr. Habibul Ahmed, second

position by Mr. Rajendra Kumar Bind and third position by Mr. Sanidul Islam.

The winners among the girls: the first position was bagged by Miss Anjali Das,

second position by Miss Sagarika Bhagawati and third prize by Miss Pratibha Rajbongshi. All the winner were felicited by a

certificate and cash prize.

International Trip

Mr. Arindam Saha, Mr. Arindom Ain, Mr. Basab Das and Mr. Bhabajit Baruah attended the BRICS Youth Energy

Summit as a part of the Russian Energy Week International Forum during October 4th to 6th, 2018 at Moscow, Russia.

The Indian Delegate was led by Dr. Manpreet Manna, Former Director of AICTE and Mrs. Purnima Anand, President

of the BRICS International Forum. Mr. Bhabajit Baruah and Mr. Arindam Saha had the pleasure to be nominated as

the eminent speakers of the plenary discussion during the event. Mr. Bhabajit Baruah, Assistant Professor, Department

of Mechanical Engineering, took active role sharing ideas and expressing opinions in the session over the discussion

on “Energy as a new development horizon”.

Induction Programme of MBA and BBA Students

A three-day induction programme was organised for the benefit of newly admitted MBA and BBA students for the

Academic session 2018-19. Prof. N. N. Sharma, Professor, KKHSOU was the Chief Guest and he enlightened the

students about the challenges confronted by modern day managers. Further, there were quiz programmes, management

games and various interactive programmes conducted to make the student familiar with the business world. On the last

day of the programme, the students were taken for an industrial visit to Marico Industries Limited, Guwahati.

Dr. Nandita Lahkar Kalita, Assistant Professor of Department of Physics, has been awarded Visiting Associateship at

the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, for a period of three years with effect

from August 1, 2017 till July 31, 2020.

The 9th Batch of MBA students were able to bring laurels to the institute in the University Final Examination

where Group Captain Mohammad Kalim, Miss Smriti Bhardwaz and Miss Nitu Sharma were successful in

securing first, second and fourth positions respectively in the University.

Miss Karabi Bhattacharjya (Right) and Miss Piyali Sarkar secured 2nd and 3rd

position respectively in the Quiz Competition organised by the Airport Authority of

India on the occasion of Vigilance Awareness Week 2018.

In the Odd Semester of 2018, Mr. N C Deka, Retired Official of ONGC spoke on ‘Corporate Expectations from

MBA Graduates’ while Prof. N M Panda of NEHU delivered a lecture on ‘The Kiss of Success’. The students and

faculty members of the MBA dept. were highly benefitted by interacting with the Experts which promotes

Industry-academia interface.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT PROJECTS:

Department of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering identified two outstanding projects for the

semester Jan-June 2018 as titled

o 1. “Automatic bottle filling station using Atmega8 microcontroller” by Ankita Baruah,

Debanta Kishur Bordoloi and Rashmi Hazarika under the supervision of Ms. Chayashree

Patgiri.

o 2. “Survillence using Quadcopter” by Rangaraj Kalita, Rezwan Saikia and Nagma Anjum

Ahmed under the supervision of Ms. Munmi Dutta.

Department of Civil Engineering identified an outstanding project for the semester Jan - June 2018 as titled

o 1. “Flood erosion of river Brahmaputra and Design of Spur as a river training works” by

Dipankar Rajbongshi, Kriti Deka Singha, Kaushik Bhattacharya and Koushik Sharma under

the supervision of Mr. Nazrul Islam.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering identified two outstanding projects for the semester Jan - June 2018 as

titled

o 1. “ FAKE NEWS DETECTION” by Mriganka Bora, Meghasmita Das, Sumedha Biswas and Sankar

Swami Saikia under the supervision of Pinky Saikia Dutta.

o 2.”FRUIT QUALITY ANALYSIS” by Arnav Saha, Bimal Chandra Nath, Kasmita Baruah and Ashish

Kumar Kalita under the supervision of Dr. Meenakshi Gogoi.

ASTU (Assam Science and Technology University) has declared the results of MTech students being passed out on June

2018. The number of students appeared for MTech is 8 and 8 students passed making it a pass percent of 100%.

The Assam Science and Technology University has declared the results of MBA programme. The examination of which were

held during May – June 2018. A total of 17 students appeared and 14 students passed making it a pass percent being 82%.

ASTU (Assam Science and Technology University) has declared the results of MCA students being passed out on June 2018.

The number of students appeared for MCA is 11 and 8 students passed making it a pass percent of 72%.

ASTU (Assam Science and Technology University) has also declared the results of BTech students being passed out on June

2018. The number of students appeared for BTech in AEI is 19 and 7 students passed making it a pass percent of 37%. The

number of students appeared for BTech in CSE is 57 and 30 students passed making it a pass percent of 53%. The number of

students appeared for BTech in ECE is 64 and 23 students passed making it a pass percent of 36%. The number of students

appeared for BTech in EE is 45 and 19 students passed making it a pass percent of 42%. The number of students appeared for

BTech in ME is 87 and 55 students passed making it a pass percent of 63%. The number of students appeared for BTech in

CE is 64 and 40 students passed making it a pass percent of 63%.

RESULTS

Quiz and Debate Club

The Quiz and Debate Club organized a quiz competition in association with Airports Authority of India on 1st

November 2018. The quiz was organized as part of the Vigilance Awareness Week observed from 29th October 2018

to 3rd November 2018 by the Central Vigilance Commission. About 30 students from different branches and

disciplines of GIMT participated in the competition. The results of the quiz competition are as follows. 1st Prize:

Deepjyoti Deka, B.Tech 7th Sem, Electrical Engineering, GIMT Guwahati, 2nd Prize: Karabi Bhattacharya, MBA 1st

Sem, GIMT Guwahati, 3rd Prize: Piyali Sarkar, MBA 1st Sem, GIMT Guwahati. The winners were felicitated in a prize

distribution ceremony organized on 3rd Nov 2018 at the Conference Hall, Airports Authority of India Regional

Headquarter, North-Eastern Region, Guwahati.

Handicraft Club

Flower making and Vase making competition was held on 4th October, 2018.

Around 22 students participated. The following students were the winners: 1st

prize – Kaustav Parasar (EE 5th sem) and Bhaskar Jyoti Talukdar (EE 5th sem),

2nd prize – Nayan Moni Patra (ME 7th sem) and 3rd prize – Banashree Baruah (CE

7th sem) and Krishnakhi Hazarika (CE 7th sem) with a Consolation Prize to

Ananya Choudhury (CSE 1st sem).

Literature Club

The Literature club of GIMT – Guwahati celebrated National Education Day

on the occasion of birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. A symposium titled ‘Contribution of Maulana

Abul Kalam Azad as a freedom fighter and educationist’ was organised on

the occasion. Prof. Jayanta Kishore Sarmah (Dept. of Political Science) and

Dr. Mayuri Sarma (Dept. of Education) from Gauhati University spoke on

the occasion. There were altogether 80 participants comprising senior

professors, heads of various departments, faculty members and students of

the Institute.
