Millennials today, make up the majority

of the workforce and are maturing into leadership positions. A recent study

from human resources research firm, high-lighted four major ways in which the youngest

members of the workforce are setting in motion fundamental change, from a growing emphasis on

self-development to remote working, from freelance roles to future-proofing strategies. Baby Boomers are

returning to work as consultants or temporary workers. It is not uncommon for a company's workforce to be com-

prised of as many as five generations of workers. And, while a lot of ink has been spilled over how each of these

generations is different, the bottom line is people are differ-ent (regardless of the source of difference) and the work-

place has to be adaptable and flexible to accommodate individual needs and preferences. Given this, we at The

Economic Times would like to announce the 2nd Edition of The Workforce of the Future Summit centered on the theme

“Technology for People, People for Technology” will focus on the upgrading of the workforce to make space for the

new age digital mind-sets. This two day summit will have an eclectic mix of HR Leaders across industries come

together to explore Practical, Forward-Thinking Strate-gies To Attract Top Talent, Combat Labour & Skills Shortages, Boost Engagement & Retention, Drive Down Attrition Rates & Ensure Workforce Stability

In Uncertain Times.

THE INDIAN OUTLOOK

India is at a crossroads. Economic forecasters predict that India’s economy will climb to be the third largest in the world. With this remarkable growth rate, it is estimated that there will be 104.62 million fresh entrants in the labour market by 2022; in fact, India would need to create 8.1 million jobs annually, against the 5.5 million created in 2017, to keep employment rates constant between 2015 and 2025. However, modern India symbolizes some of the most confounding ambiguities of world development. On one hand, there is a growing economy with a booming, world-class information technology sector; on the other, India struggles with lower than expected job creation, and extremely limited use of technology beyond the big cities, which is where a majority of the population resides. The country's low skill intensity, and low education attainment present a major challenge in preparing the workforce for India's future. To create more and better jobs, certain fundamental realities need to be recognised – the untapped opportunities in the services sector, the imperatives of policy and regulatory stability, and the welfare needs of a new workforce.

GLOBAL WORKFORCETRENDS

According to a recent study by Gartner, HR leaders have to counter the growing trends and support corporate business ambitions, with the need to focus on key levers of improve-ment. Let’s have a look the trends that are driving the Global Workforce.

The Hot Labour Market – The Global unemployment rates contin-ue to decline, with the market opening critical roles driven with digital capabilities. According to Gartner TalentNeuronTM, 47% of S&P 100 job postings in 2017 were for the same 37 roles, and 90% of S&P 100 companies recruited for those same roles. With this, the strategic workforce planning is taking on a new urgency as the complexion of the workforce changes and different skill sets emerge, evolve and expire.

Digital Disruption – In this globally competitive work environment, CEOs are pursuing digital initiatives in order to capture both opportunity and to avoid being “Amazoned” away. In Gartner Digital Enterprise recent survey, 67% of business leaders agreed that if their company did not become significantly more digi-talized by 2020, it would no longer be competitive. HR is under extreme pressure to lead the digital transformation of their com-pany.

Social and Political Change – For a continuous growth of the business, HR needs a productive workforce. With structural and social challenges such as pay inequity and the #MeToo move-ment are directly affecting employee retention and morale. HR are now looking at reshaping executives’ employment con-tracts.

Declining Discretionary Effort – Today, employee engagement is of extreme importance as the workforce is restless and disen-gaged, and few companies can claim high levels of discretion-ary effort or intent to stay among their employees.

THE BLENDED WORKFORCEEMPLOYEE + TECHNOLOGY

The Future of Work has already arrived with HR leaders join-ing hands with Technology Leaders to reinvent their work-force by efficiently matching the supply and demand of people and skills in a highly personalized way. Their partner-ship is all about designing technology that works for people and not because of them. Thus, technology isn’t just chang-ing workplace tools but radically reinventing the way busi-nesses are designed, built, and run.

Performance metrics evolves exponentially, wherein mea-suring human performance will be in a mechanical way. Key Performance Indicators (KPI) such as efficiency, speed, accuracy, lead generation and sales performance which are widely used to measure success will be replaced with the wave of workplace game-changers such as: big data, the cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT), cognitive computing, intelligent assistants and so-called artificial intelligence (AI). These are the things that are propelling us towards a new era of automation, virtualisation and robotization.

WHY THE ECONOMIC TIMESWORKFORCE OF THE FUTURESUMMIT 2019?

A plethora of young populace, an aging workforce, an ongoing labour shortage, lack of understanding or skill sets and a reluctance to adopt new technology are all major factors contributing to the change in workforce dynamics of the future. There is a substantial need to understand the challenges and chalk out adoptable solutions. With this in purview, The Economic Times is pleased to announce the next edition of The Economic Times Workforce of the Future Summit 2019 centered on the theme:
