Dear Friends,

Catholic Charities is truly blessed to have hundreds of employees, and thousands of volunteers and

friends, who, through your hard work, dedication and generosity, helped to carry out the mission of

Catholic Charities to more than 100,000 of our most vulnerable neighbors of all faiths this past year.

We took some major steps forward with our services and outreach in 2013. First and foremost was the

completion of the new Journeys facility in West Omaha. With the kindness of our contributors we were able

to greatly expand our residential and outpatient services to reach more youth struggling with addiction

and mental illness.

Secondly, we transformed the former Columbus Senior Center into the new Columbus Community Center.

All services transferred to Catholic Charities from the City of Columbus, and we are now serving meals to

over 100 seniors a day, in addition to various social activities and educational opportunities for seniors in

Columbus. It is truly a gathering place blessed by grace and love.

The Catholic Charities staff, volunteers and board of directors give thanks every day for our wonderful

contributors. Without your acts of love, kindness and goodwill, we would not have so many

wonderfully happy endings. It is a blessing to work side-by-side with dedicated people focused

on bringing the tender heart of Christ to those in need.

As a result of the combination, Catholic Charities will be able to continue providing human services offered at this location . Catholic Charities received property with a fair market value of $1,208,119 and in exchange forgave a $525,000 note receivable due from OCH, LLC . The transaction resulted in an inherent contribution of $683,119 .** This amount includes $560,000 related to the Capital Campaign for the Journeys Renovation .A copy of the Independent Auditor’s Report is available for review from the Catholic Charities Finance Department .

People we’ve served, in their own words.

“My name is Hannah, and my father sexually abused me. To cope with the trauma, I turned to drugs and alcohol in junior high. I felt like I needed to be high to handle social situations, including everyday interactions with my teachers and peers. My life turned into a parade of unsuccessful visits to psychologists, psychiatrists and doctors. By the age of 17, I had overdosed. Twice. Finally, at the suggestion of one of my therapists, my mother enrolled me into the residential program at Journeys. When I walked through those doors on January 8th, 2013, I knew things could be different. I found hope. After seven months in the therapeutic group home, I’m now working through the intensive outpatient program. I have the tools to handle my painful past in a healthy way, and I’ve been sober for 16 months.”

“My husband’s abuse began so gradually I didn’t even recognize it at first. Finally, after eight years of feeling trapped, hopeless and abandoned, I decided to do something about my situation. I believe it was my son growing up, and what I was afraid he was hearing, seeing and understanding, that prompted me to take action. I came to The Shelter, seeking safety and security for both of us. With the help of a child advocate, I was able to have a straightforward discussion with my son, who was much more aware of what was going on than I had realized. Together, we made a decision to better our lives. With the support and advocacy of The Shelter staff, we were able to secure an apartment and start our new lives. I could never have done it without them.”

“My name is Beckie, and my husband Jon and I adopted our son, Jeremiah, through Catholic Charities ten years ago. From the beginning, we loved Catholic Charities’ child-centered, completely open adoption policies. Jeremiah’s birthmother chose us to raise him and, when he was eight days old, Jeremiah joined us for the first time. It was an amazing experience. An experience that has shaped our lives for a decade. This spring, Jeremiah shattered his school’s record for a fund-raising raffle. For his efforts he won a cash prize, which he promptly informed us he wanted to donate to Catholic Charities. He told us, in not so many words, he wanted to help other children like him become “lucky ones.” This is just who Jeremiah is. We are the lucky ones.”
