Parish Directory Hosanna! “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9). With these words the Church enters the holiest of weeks, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. When the people of Jerusalem cried out with their “hosannas,” they were using an ancient Hebrew shout of acclamation that meant “Pray, save us.” The king to whom they were shouting eventually would save them, but in a way that would be far from what they expected. Salvation would come from the wood of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring freedom from sin and life through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put their faith and trust in him.

Five Simple Ways to Celebrate Holy Week at Home

Create a simple prayer space in your home, and gather there to pray during the week. Palm Sunday: At your regular Mass time, read the first Palm Sunday Gospel (Mt 21:1–11) and meditate on or discuss what Jesus might be thinking as he enters Jerusalem for the last time. Holy Thursday: Bake bread for sharing at dinner; make a ritual of stripping the dinner table of all cloths and decorations after dinner. Good Friday: Pray the Stations of the Cross at 3 p.m. Holy Saturday: In the morning, read Psalm 64 and break your Good Friday fast solemnly with a simple meal. Easter Sunday: Dress up the dinner table again. Include candles and crosses, so that the candy baskets aren’t the only festive items present. Sing Alleluia and read the Easter Gospel (Matthew 28:1-10) with solemnity and joy. Look online for other suggestions for celebrating Holy Week at home, to deepen and enrich your experience at this time of social isolation.

Parish Life During the Coronavirus Crisis

Our regular weekend and morning Masses are cancelled. We will NOT have Triduum Services or Easter Vigil / Sunday Masses. Here are some ways you can celebrate this holiest of seasons during this difficult time: • Mercy Home offers a Sunday morning broadcast of the Mass at 9:30 a.m. on WGN.

• The Archdiocese of Chicago broadcasts Mass at radiotv.archchicago.org/television/broadcast-masses; you may also view those same Masses at the archdiocesan YouTube channel by visiting youtube.com (search for “Catholic Chicago”).

• Masses are also available on EWTN. Daily Mass is at 7:00 a.m. and replayed at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday at 7:00 a.m. Mass is live, then they replay it at 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Visit ewtn.com/catholicism/daily-readings for the EWTN webpage of Daily Mass and Readings.

• Daily readings may also be found at the website for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, usccb.org.

• Relevant Radio offers many resources, including daily Mass at relevantradio.com. Rectory Hours: By order of the governor the Rectory will be closed until April 8. You may call and leave a voice message and someone will return your call. Church Envelopes: You may drop off your Church envelopes in the mail slot at the back door of the Rectory. Open the screen door and drop them in the mail slot. You may also mail them to the Rectory. All of St. Christina activities are cancelled until further notice. • All weddings and baptisms must be postponed and can be re-scheduled only once the order

is lifted. There are no exceptions to this, regardless of the size of the group. However, in case of an extreme emergency for baptism, please seek the permission of your bishop. Funerals and wakes must be postponed until Governor Pritzker’s order is lifted.

• No confessions until further notice.

• The Adoration Chapel is closed until further notice.

• Split the Pot is on hold until the Coronavirus issue is resolved and Sunday Masses resume. The pot will continue to grow and envelopes can be turned in at the Rectory or when Masses resume.

• SCRIP Cash & Carry is CANCELLED until further notice.

• First Communion Retreat has been postponed.

• The Baby Bottle Project is on hold. When the Rectory re-opens (April 8, unless the governor extends the stay-at-home order), they can be dropped off at the Rectory. At the present time, there is no secure place to drop them off since everything is locked up.

• The Lenten CRS Rice Bowls can be turned in when the Rectory re-opens or Masses resume. Continued on following page

Lenten Regulations Following are the regulations for abstinence and fasting to be observed by Catholics during Lent: A fast and abstinence is prescribed for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is observed by all Catholics between 18 and 59. Those bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid food between meals is not permitted. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years and older on all Fridays of Lent. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.

Baby Bottle Project POSTPONED Our Parish is participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The

Women’s Centers have saved over 36,000 babies — and their mothers — from abortion since opening in 1984. Baby Bottles can be returned when the Rectory re-opens or Masses resume. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. If you wish to make a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Please do not make it payable to St. Christina Church.

• Our parish Lenten program, “Bishop Robert Barron’s Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues,” has been CANCELLED until further notice.

• Women’s CRHP Retreat on March 21-22 has been re-scheduled to May 30-31.

• Lenten Prayer Group, Sacred Space, will be VIRTUAL. • Senior exercise has been suspended until April 20.

• Adult Grief Support is CANCELLED until further notice.

Sew… We Need Your Help! If you can sew, we need your help! Disposable face masks are in short supply and fabric masks can help our healthcare workers and senior citizens. There are many designs online but simple is best. The instructions below for a simple mask can be adapted depending on what you have available. Tightly woven cotton fabric is best. If you don’t have flannel for the lining, use two layers of cotton fabric. If you don’t have elastic, use bias tape or fabric to edge the short end of the mask and make 10-12" ties on each corner. A collection box has been placed in the vestibule of the Oak Lawn Village Hall by the police desk on the west side of the building. The address of the Village Hall is: 9446 Raymond Avenue, Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. Please put your completed masks in a plastic bag and drop them in the box. They will be distributed as needed to local health care providers, nursing homes, etc. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. Dig into your fabric stash and be creative! Happy sewing! Since many stores will be mandatorily closed, fabric can be purchased at Walmart, Amazon or mail order from Joann Fabrics.

Dear Friends in Christ,

During this time of uncertainty and anxiety, I pray that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. This crisis challenges us to act responsibly by following the social isolation guidelines while striving to stay close emotionally and spiritually to our families, our friends and our communities. Please join me in praying for those affected by COVID-19, as well as our first responders, health care workers and individuals who have lost income due to precautionary closures.

Times such as these highlight the need for the spiritual sustenance and community connectivity our Archdiocese parishes provide every member of our Catholic community. To protect the safety of our community, most pastoral services are currently being performed virtually. I invite you to visit our website, www.archchicago.org for up-to-date information on televised liturgies and other resources.

It is critically important that our parishes and pastors receive the offertory support they need to remain operational and sustainable despite the suspension of weekly Masses. The Archdiocese has developed a universal online offertory page where the faithful can make an offertory donation to any parish in the Archdiocese. These donations will assist the parishes with ongoing expenses related to ministry, maintenance, staff and other pressing needs, that depend on regular offertory support from parishioners. I encourage you to contribute online to your parish at or above your usual offertory amount. Many of our parishes are suffering significant financial hardship during this challenging time. Your online support will make a critical difference.

Additionally, as we are sensitive to the financial hardship suffered by many in recent days, we have also launched a Coronavirus Emergency Fund. This fund will support members of our community who have been negatively affected by the pandemic. For example, the fund will support parents of Catholic school students who might struggle with tuition payments because of unexpected job loss, ministries providing the needy with sustenance or parish communities deeply harmed by the pandemic. Our neighbors down the street and across the Archdiocese need our support at this critical moment. Your donation can help provide them with that support.

Please visit www.archchicago.org/coronavirus/donate to support parish offertory, the Coronavirus Emergency Fund or both as your means allow. Your generosity is needed now more than ever. Our Archdiocese community has always come together to support one another during times of need, and I ask you to do so again. Please continue to pray for each other, as I continue to pray for you.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Cardinal Cupich

Lenten Message 2020 Pope Francis

“We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Cor 5:20)

This year the Lord grants us, once again, a favourable time to prepare to celebrate with renewed hearts the great mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus, the cornerstone of our personal and communal Christian life. We must continually return to this mystery in mind and heart, for it will continue to grow within us in the measure that we are open to its spiritual power and respond with freedom and generosity.

The paschal mystery as the basis of conversion Christian joy flows from listening to, and accepting, the Good News of the death and resurrection of Jesus. This kerygma sums up the mystery of a love “so real, so true, so concrete, that it invites us to a relationship of openness and fruitful dialogue” (Christus Vivit, 117). Whoever believes this message rejects the lie that our life is ours to do with as we will. Rather, life is born of the love of God our Father, from his desire to grant us life in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10). If we listen instead to the tempting voice of the “father of lies” (Jn 8:44), we risk sinking into the abyss of absurdity, and experiencing hell here on earth, as all too many tragic events in the personal and collective human experience sadly bear witness. In this Lent of 2020, I would like to share with every Christian what I wrote to young people in the Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit: “Keep your eyes fixed on the outstretched arms of Christ crucified, let yourself be saved over and over again. And when you go to confess your sins, believe firmly in his mercy which frees you of your guilt. Contemplate his blood poured out with such great love, and let yourself be cleansed by it. In this way, you can be reborn ever anew” (No. 123). Jesus’ Pasch is not a past event; rather, through the power of the Holy Spirit it is ever present, enabling us to see and touch with faith the flesh of Christ in those who suffer.

The urgency of conversion It is good to contemplate more deeply the paschal mystery through which God’s mercy has been bestowed upon us. Indeed, the experience of mercy is only possible in a “face to face” relationship with the crucified and risen Lord “who loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal 2:20), in a heartfelt dialogue between friends. That is why prayer is so important in Lent. Even more than a duty, prayer is an expression of our need to respond to God’s love which always precedes and sustains us. Christians pray in the knowledge that, although unworthy, we are still loved. Prayer can take any number of different forms, but what truly matters in God’s eyes is that it penetrates deep within us and chips away at our hardness of heart, in order to convert us ever more fully to God and to his will. In this favourable season, then, may we allow ourselves to be led like Israel into the desert (cf. Hos 2:14), so that we can at last hear our Spouse’s voice and allow it to resound ever more deeply within us. The more fully we are engaged with his word, the more we will experience the mercy he freely gives us. May we not let this time of grace pass in vain, in the foolish illusion that we can control the times and means of our conversion to him.

April 5, 2020 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 11

God’s passionate will to dialogue with his children The fact that the Lord once again offers us a favourable time for our conversion should never be taken for granted. This new opportunity ought to awaken in us a sense of gratitude and stir us from our sloth. Despite the sometimes tragic presence of evil in our lives, and in the life of the Church and the world, this opportunity to change our course expresses God’s unwavering will not to interrupt his dialogue of salvation with us. In the crucified Jesus, who knew no sin, yet for our sake was made to be sin (cf. 2 Cor 5:21), this saving will led the Father to burden his Son with the weight of our sins, thus, in the expression of Pope Benedict XVI, “turning of God against himself” (Deus Caritas Est, 12). For God also loves his enemies (cf. Mt 5:43-48). The dialogue that God wishes to establish with each of us through the paschal mystery of his Son has nothing to do with empty chatter, like that attributed to the ancient inhabitants of Athens, who “spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new” (Acts 17:21). Such chatter, determined by an empty and superficial curiosity, characterizes worldliness in every age; in our own day, it can also result in improper use of the media.

A richness to be shared, not kept for oneself Putting the paschal mystery at the centre of our lives means feeling compassion towards the wounds of the crucified Christ present in the many innocent victims of wars, in attacks on life, from that of the unborn to that of the elderly, and various forms of violence. They are likewise present in environmental disasters, the unequal distribution of the earth’s goods, human trafficking in all its forms, and the unbridled thirst for profit, which is a form of idolatry. Today too, there is a need to appeal to men and women of good will to share, by almsgiving, their goods with those most in need, as a means of personally participating in the building of a better world. Charitable giving makes us more human, whereas hoarding risks making us less human, imprisoned by our own selfishness. We can and must go even further, and consider the structural aspects of our economic life. For this reason, in the midst of Lent this year, from 26 to 28 March, I have convened a meeting in Assisi with young economists, entrepreneurs and change-makers, with the aim of shaping a more just and inclusive economy. As the Church’s magisterium has often repeated, political life represents an eminent form of charity (cf. Pius XI, Address to the Italian Federation of Catholic University Students, 18 December 1927). The same holds true for economic life, which can be approached in the same evangelical spirit, the spirit of the Beatitudes. I ask Mary Most Holy to pray that our Lenten celebration will open our hearts to hear God’s call to be reconciled to himself, to fix our gaze on the paschal mystery, and to be converted to an open and sincere dialogue with him. In this way, we will become what Christ asks his disciples to be: the salt of the earth and the light of the world (cf. Mt 5:13-14).

On Having Said So Copyright 2020 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

Something new catches my attention today as I consider Christ’s Passion as told by the evangelist Matthew. Specifically, I’m referring to the similar answers Jesus offers to three questions he’s asked. The first conversation is with Judas. Here, while Jesus and his friends are eating the Passover meal, Jesus says that one of the Twelve will betray him. His friends are distressed at this, and ask him in turn, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” Jesus says his betrayer is the one “who has dipped his hand into the dish with me…” Nice fellowship, eh? “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Judas asks. Jesus answers, “You have said so.”

I’m confused by the response. Sarcastic, maybe? But even while pondering this, I see that Jesus uses the exact same phrase again later when the religious elite try to obtain false testimony against him to justify killing him. Here, per two witnesses, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it.’” The high priest wants answers but gets only silence, so Caiaphas puts it to Jesus directly: “I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Once again, Jesus answers, “You have said so,” but the meaning seems different now.

Caiaphas must be livid, and Jesus immediately ups the ante by adding: “But I tell you: From now on you will see ‘the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power’ and ‘coming on the clouds of heaven.’” This is enough for the high priest: “He has blasphemed!” What further need have we of witnesses?” And just like that, the die that was cast long ago is cast in real time. Jesus goes next to Pilate, where our Lord employs the same refrain — but now, in the current tense — when the governor asks, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus answers, “You say so,” and the meaning seems a bit skewed once more.

My bible offers this footnote after Christ’s “You have said so” response to Judas: “This is a half-affirmative. Emphasis is laid on the pronoun and the answer implies that the statement would not have been made if the question had not been asked.” Judas — who’s already got his silver — knows the answer to his own question (as, of course, does Jesus). The high priest’s inquiry is around Christ’s messianic identity, and Caiaphas is so blinded by rage, he just wants to hear Jesus say “Yes!” to validate the cross. Perhaps Jesus simply doesn’t want to give him the satisfaction. Finally, Pilate’s question is around Christ’s identity as the King of the Jews. He doesn’t understand what he is asking, so perhaps Jesus is thinking that a straight-up “Yes” would be pointless. Confusing, like I said. Oddly, though, I think back now to Jesus asking Peter “But who do you say that I am?” and Peter’s “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” response. Jesus answers, “Blessed are you Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” No need for “You have said so” here, I guess. Which ultimately tells me all I need to know.
