This popular venue for many community projects was opened in 1985 and, despite continued regular maintenance, the hard wood timber had suffered from the harsh weather over the past 30 years. The glazing above the main entrance had become quite dangerous being held in only by the mastic sealant. Church Warden, Harry Slater, approached 4Together Area Action Partnership for funding. Councillors Lindsay and Crathorne agreed to fund the project in full from their neighbourhood budget funds. A spokesperson added: “Hopefully this project will make the building more secure. We hope that the new framework will last considerably longer than the old frames with much less maintenance cost for the church.” @_TheChapter_

WHAT IS TERRACLEAN?TerraClean is the only patented de-carbonising treatment of its kind in the world. Originally developed by Canadian scientists this technology is now

available in the UK for both petrol and diesel engines. The process involves connecting your engine to a TerraClean machine that takes over as the fuel supply during the treatment. The engine is then run onthemixofhighlyrefinedfuelandsolventfreecleaningagentsthatwill

not harm your engine or fuel system. The process cleans the build up of tar and varnishes from the fuel injection system, thesebuildupovertimeinanyengineandaffecttheefficiencyof

injectors and therefore engine performance and fuel economy.TerraClean is unlike any other carbon cleaning treatment or pour in the

tank cleaning solution.TerraClean continues to work after the combustion process has begun, when the fuel is burnt in the engine the gases produced help to safely

remove carbon deposits from the combustion chamber and valve areas. This cleaning process carries on through the exhaust side of the

engine helping to keep emissions system components, egr systems, turbochargers and catalytic converters in good condition. The removal of these deposits from the fuel system and engine restores its performance

Dear Editor

Thank you to all who came to the Stuart Trotter’s All About Picture Book Exhibition last week and making it a great success. I hope you found Stuart’s illustrations inspiring and the work of the pupils and students just as impressive.

As well, a huge thank you to Stuart and the children and young people for sharing their amazing talent; to Ferryhill Town Council and staff for a great venue and lots of support; and to the Ferryhill and Chilton Chapter for the wonderful publicity. You all came together to make this a great community event.

Best Wishes,

Glenys

Holly, a Year 3 pupil at Cleves Cross Primary School, with her winning design: a front cover of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Exhibition excitement as pupils showcase their artwork

Children at Cleves Cross Primary School recently enjoyed an exhibition, organised by children’s picture book illustra-tor, Stuart Trotter and Approach Too, which spanned from 29th February to Friday 4th March. The exhibition promised to provide opportunities for local children and young people to showcase their amazing talent and artwork to the public.Holly Richards, a year 3 pupil at the primary school said: “We met a famous illustrator called Stuart Trotter, he told us about his job and how he draws

the pictures for Rupert Bear. I found this very in-teresting and I think his job sounds awesome.“He told us that we could create our own front cover of a children’s story book and that the best ones would be picked to go in an exhibition with some of his pictures from real books!“I really wanted to have a go but I wasn’t sure what an exhibition was so I had to talk about it with my mam and dad when I got home later. It was so hard to make my mind up what to draw. I finally picked The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe because I was enjoying this story at

school. I had to draw my picture three times before I was happy with it, and then I handed it in. I felt nervous and excited all at the same time. I wished and wished it would be picked! Then, finally, I got an invitation to the opening of the exhibition while I was at school. My picture had been picked! I was so happy and couldn’t wait till home time to tell my family. I walked to the opening of the exhibition with some of the other children from my school who had pictures in the exhibition with our head teacher, I told her about my picture on the way. The exhibition was fab-u-lous! “I loved seeing all the pictures that the other children around Ferry-hill had made along with Stuart’s pictures from his books and there with them all was my picture! I felt so proud. I really hope lots of other people saw the exhi-bition and enjoyed looking at the lovely pictures.”

Durham Constabulary has received yet another first in an evaluation designed to review the effective-ness of police initiatives, with a primary interest in its Checkpoint SchemeThe constabulary has joined forces with Cam-bridge University to under-take the largest academic evaluation, known as a randomised control trial (RCT), in British policing history. The evaluation began earlier this month and is expected to take several months to complete. Randomised control trials are used in medical trials to test the effectiveness of drugs and treatments. This is the first time a trial of this nature will be used on this scale to evaluate the effectiveness of a police initiative.Durham’s pioneering programme Checkpoint was launched in April 2015 offering support and advice to low level offend-

ers by offering an alterna-tive to a conviction.Offenders sign up to a four-month bespoke contract which gets to the root of why they chose to break the law. There are several inter-ventions, run by many agencies in partnership with Durham Constabulary, which are then put in place and which the offender has to adhere to. If the contract is broken or incomplete, they revert back to the original pros-ecution. To date, the scheme has been a huge success seeing over 500 people sign up to the scheme and over 300 ‘graduates’ - a number which increases by the day. As well as interventions which address substance misuse, the offender will be offered assistance with any housing, mental health and financial issues they may have in order to help get themselves back on track.

Kev Weallans and Jim Maddison who competed in Over 60’s National Pairs Championships.

Last end heartbreak for Ferryhill pair

Having fought their way through a couple of testing preliminary rounds, Kev Weallans and Jim Maddison travelled to York to rep-resent Ferryhill IBC in the area finals of the National Over 60’s Pairs Indoor Bowls Championships, against a pair from Hornsea. The match started well and by end eight they were eight shots up and looking comfortable. However, suddenly the pair lost their way. Scoring only once from the next eight ends they found themselves two shots down and time running out.A late rally produced four shots with only two in reply and so at the last end the scores were level.Lead man Jim Maddison put in four great woods and with the skips to play, Ferryhill were holding two shots. Unfortunately the Hornsea

skip kept his best four until last and took the shot. Skip Kev Weallans was just off target in his attempt to pull back the shot and the pair eventually lost out by two. There was more bad luck for Ferryhill in the Premier League in their efforts to secure a place in the playoffs as the road show moved to Gateshead for the last round of fixtures.Their opposition for the day was to be Great Aycliffe but on the eve of the fixture Aycliffe declared they were unable to field a team. The two points were subse-quently handed to Ferryhill who now found themselves in third and holding a playoff place. Of the other three fixtures, two had a direct bearing on Ferryhill’s chances.Lady luck was definitely not on their side, however, as both results went against them leaving them fifth - only one point outside of the playoffs.

However this was a great achievement for a small club like Ferryhill compet-ing against the best in the region. Ferryhill were looking for maximum points to enhance their title chances when they entertained Spennymoor in the Durham & District triples. This fixture is always a very close affair and it turned out to be just that as only two points separated the sides overall.H Wilson’s rink for Ferryhill produced a late rally taking nine shots from the last five ends to win by three.Ray Jones did likewise. His rink took ten shots from the last six ends to edge home by two. However, this was not enough to earn the aggre-gate score points as the third rink were beaten by seven shots. Final scores: H Wilson 12-9 H Hall; J Gleghorn 9-16 G Black; R Jones 13-11 B Raine. Fer-ryhill 4-4 Spennymoor.

Ferryhill Town youth u7’s entertained Darlington Spaire lads on a cold Sunday morning. The snow fell but it wasn’t enough to put off a very enthusiastic set of kids! Ferryhill opened the scoring when a flowing passing move involving Max, Ben and Jayden resulted in Jayden slotting the ball in left footed to make it 1-0.Spaire lads fought back and scored a great goal, lobbing Jude in goal who wasn’t tall enough to reach it. After halftime, Ferryhill got theirs and Jaydens second of the match, he took and

scored directly from the corner, something he has been practicing. Spaire lads fought hard and were only denied by some good solid defending by Ben, Zak and Jude. Final score 2-1. In the second game on came Cole, Logan , Finn and Archie but Spaire lads were just too strong, 1-8 the final score, Jude getting Ferryhill’s consola-tion goal. The supporters went away happy after seeing some great football and team work.Next week is away against Primrose Hill.

Ferryhill Celtic travelled to Pelton Crown on league duty and it was a hard fought game for the title favourites. After a tough start, half way through the half, a Chris O’Hare cross found Luke Thompson who volleyed home to give Celtic the lead. Shortly after, however, Pelton Crown drew level to make it 1-1 at half time. The second half had a more promising start for Celtic as

Dave Eltringham chipped the keeper for his second goal in two appearances to restore Celtic’s lead. Shortly after, a Shane Todd cross caused chaos in the box resulting in an own goal and a final score of 3-1 to Celtic.Leaders, Framwellgate also won 3-1 but have a free weekend, so Celtic could take top spot if they win the Ferryhill derby against the Hub this weekend. Kick off on Sunday is 10.30am.
