TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Processions are life’s journey distilled. We move with compan-ions, aware that Christ accompa-nies us, as we move to the altar for Communion or to the font for baptism, or carry a loved one to a place of rest. In Europe, the sea-son of pilgrimage is beginning now, and tens of thousands of people are moving by foot on well-worn paths. Some take as long as six weeks to walk the last
few hundred miles of the medieval pilgrimage route to the Shrine of St. James the Apostle in Compostella, in north-ern Spain. Those who make the journey by foot, hiking, or by bicycle, have a kind of passport stamped at villages and monasteries on the road. When they present this document at the cathedral, they are given the emblem of a pilgrim, the scallop shell of St. James. High over their heads at Mass, a huge botafumero twirls clouds of sweet incense through the cathedral. Cynics say it is to mask the odor of smelly feet. The pilgrims know better. Seeing through the clouds the happy faces of those they met along the road, they recognize a foretaste of the welcome into heaven, and the joy of meeting loved ones in the Kingdom of God.

THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 30, 2019 Year C
RADICAL TRANSFORMATION On this Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the readings describe anything but an ordinary time. They are disturbing and they leave us disturbed. The Old Testament reading recounts a young man’s radical break with the past to follow a new path. The Gospel describes how life as we know it is abruptly changed if we follow the call of Christ. The psalm and Paul assure us that such life-altering change is possible only because of the power of God’s love. We are presented with a stark choice. To love as God loves, we must leave our old lives behind. We must leave behind not just the bad, the selfish, and the evil but the ordinary, our daily work, and the important, our families, our lives. Loving as God loves requires a radical transformation, not a smooth transition. —Copyright © J. S. Paluch

LECTORS NEEDED It is an ancient teaching in the Church that Christ is truly present in His Word: the Word that is spoken, heard and acted upon. The Lec-tor proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ, making God present to the gath-ered community. If you are comfortable with public speaking and have a will-ingness to assist us here periodically at OLVSTA with the Reading of the Word, please consider becoming a Lector at one of our Weekend Masses (5:15 pm Saturday Vigil, 10:15 am, 12:15 pm & 5;15 pm on Sunday). It doesn’t take up too much of your time and you would be attending Mass on the Lord’s Day, any-way. Instructions/practice would be given before your beginning to serve the Church as a Lector. Please contact the rectory for more details at 212-422-5535. Thank you for your kind consideration.
TWO NEW SHRINES AT OLVSTA
As you may or may not know there are two statues of Our Lady in the front of the Church, Our Lady of Victory & Our Lady of Fatima. We also have a beautiful new statue of Saint Joseph in the front of the Church where a statue of him should be (as opposed to the back of the Church). With that in mind we will remove the statues of each in the back of the Church and replace them with shrines to Sts. Anthony & Jude, two of the most “pop-ular” (prayed to) saints of the Church. The electric can-dles will also be replaced with real candles as we have in the front of the Church. Sts. Anthony & Jude pray for us!

MASS INTENTIONS BOOK
The Mass Intention Book is open for 2020. Giving the gift of a Mass is a wonderful way to celebrate a variety of occasions in the lives of your family and friends. You can have a Mass offered for the deceased, for a birthday, anniversary, graduation, birth or baptism of a baby, recovery from an illness or spiritual inten-tions. Arrangements may be made at the Rectory anytime or with one of the Priests after a Mass.

VIRTUE
It is certainly true that a popular government cannot flourish without virtue in the people. —Richard Henry Lee
TRUE FREEDOM
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are op-pressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ — Isaiah 61: 1-2a
