Mark Davidson created Classroom Profiling in 1996. It grew from the development of workshops he was presenting on the Microskills for Managing Behaviour which were revised in the 2000’s to become the Essential Skills for Classroom Manage-ment (ESCM). These were created in answer to the beginning of 6-20 day suspension options. Education Queensland wanted to ensure that teachers were utilising positive supportive strat-egies rather than filling up the 6-20 day suspension facilities. The research done by Joyce and Showers (1995) indicated that when coaching methodologies are utilised, transference of knowledge and skills increases. His belief in the ESCM was such that he needed to create a coaching methodology to support the language of the ESCM. This was when he created Classroom Profiling, a coaching methodology to help teachers reflect on their implementation of the essential skills. It has grown to become a complex structure that helps teachers to reflect on their practice in a variety of ways. He has trained about 1500 people to various levels and continues to do so today.

for boys in the classroom.
Beyond the Friday spelling test: Strategies for teaching spelling (3-10) – Pat Hipwell
Spelling is a highly valued skill and a necessary tool for successful writing. Too often, however, it is simply tested rather than taught. This workshop examines common approaches to spelling, the pitfalls of these approaches, and better spelling practices. The four spelling knowledges – Phonological, Morphemic, Etymological and Visual – are explained. The workshop also outlines some basic principles of spelling instruction, and a number of practical strategies for the teaching of spelling.

Literacy outside of the English classroom (7-10) – Sasha McDonald
This session aims to offer attendees a range of practical strategies, lesson segments, and scaffolding tools to incorporate into the Junior Secondary classroom in order to target and enhance the literacy capabilities of students. With a clear focus on building students’ literacy capacity in the Australian Curriculum standards and descriptors, it has become increasingly important to embed a range of skills and drills into everyday practice that enables a wide range of students to engage with the content. Some of these activities are designed to support the engagement of students with lower literacy skills, enabling them to remain engaged in a subject that relies heavily on reading and writing abilities. At the other end of the achievement gap, this presentation will also explain how to use certain activities to further extend students in the Upper Bands of the class, challenging them to improve the quality of their written responses, and read more difficult texts.
Resilience in the Classroom (7-10)
This workshop will explore the delivery of wellbeing education through a range of practical strategies with a
particular focus on the use of circle time in the classroom to build resilience and social and emotional wellbeing in
young people.
Session 4: 3.00 – 4.15pm
How do you make sure thinking is visible in the classroom? (P-6) - Therese Abberfield
As a teacher we have so many tasks to do in such a short time. Plus we have the added pressure of making sure we
have the students ready to complete their assessment. We sometimes can get lost in just getting the content done.
But are we creating critical, logical thinkers? Or are we doing the thinking for them?
As teachers we know it is important to teach thinking but how do we do it without having another add on to an
already packed curriculum? Where do we start in our own professional journey on understanding how to teach or
implement a thinking classroom? As there is so much information out there.
Are my students engaged in the classroom? (P-12) – Michelle Cubis
This workshop will define engagement in the classroom by looking at the key components to student engagement
and will provide practical strategies for improving motivation and in turn, outcomes for your students. Through a

what, why and how of these school agendas.
Getting Started with Differentiation (7-12) - Sasha McDonald
Do you want to learn how to personalise your teaching to meet the needs of all your students, but aren't sure where
to start? This session aims to present a variety of practical tools and strategies to use within lessons that will support
the students that need help, whilst challenging others at the same time. Our students aren't a homogeneous group
of learners, so why would we provide them all with the same work? Differentiation is a process of targeted teaching
that involves forward planning, in order to give your students the best opportunity to learn. We will discuss how to
use a range of data to group students into 3 tiers of capability, and then differentiate the content, process or
product to help them achieve success in your classroom.
