Founder members in the Lodge

The following two founders are still members of the Lodgeand both hold active office.

The origin of'TIlE LORD HARRIS MARK LODGE'

In 1977 the 'Manor ofBexley' Mark Lodge No. 1448 was the onlyMark Lodge which met at the Masonic Hall Sidcup Kent.

So in that year W.Bro Fredrick Burton, who was a Past Master ofthe Orpington, Lodge No.1083, and D.ofC. of the Westwood LodgeNo 1354, decided to form a new Mark Masons Lodge, which wouldalso meet at Sidcup.

It did not take Freddie long to find support from other interestedMark Mason's in the following Mark Lodges:

High Cross No 284 Temple No 322Catford No 841 Irenic No 891Orpington No 1083 Westwood No 1354

Soon he, with five other Passed Masters and twelve Brethren, hadmet to form this new Mark Lodge.

Originally it was suggested that, as most of the founders weremembers of The Lodge of Equity craft lodge, the name should beThe Equity Mark Lodge.

Freddie Burton, having been chosen to be the founding secretarysuggested that the name for the Mark Lodge should beThe Lord Harris named after Lord Harris who had been theProvincial Grand Master of Kent from 1936 to 1956.

This being agreed, Freddie wrote to the Lord Harris family, askingfor their approval to name the new Lodge after the late P.G.M.Having been granted permission to use the family name,the 'Lord Harris Mark Lodge' was formed and on ecrated onSaturday 21st January 1978, at CromweJl Road, Bromley, Kentby the P.G.M. R.W.Bro.Frederick William Friday.

As it transpired this was to be the la t consecration of a MarkLodge by R.W.Bro.Friday who died on 5th March 1979, somemonths after the consecration f the L rd Harris Mark Lodge.

Keystone Jewel Honorary Members of the LodgeAt the first meeting of the Lodge the following members of the'Consecrating Team' were made honorary members,

The Lodge became a Keystone Lodge in 1979

At the Installation meeting in January 1980, the Lodge washonoured by the visit of the Provincial Grand MasterR.W.Bro. G.P.Rudgard JP PGW. He presented and investedthose 21 brethren of the Lodge, who had subscribed towards aMark Keystone Jewel.

A member's 'Keystone Breast Jewel' (illustrated below) wasawarded to a brother for supporting the Mark Grand LodgeBuilding Fund for the new 'Mark Masons Hall' at 86 St. JamesStreet, London SWl.

Towards the end of 1999, the Province of Kent produced and issued a'Parchment' to be presented to all candidates on their Advancement to thedegree of 'Mark Master Mason'.The Parclunent welcomes them to the degree, and gives details of the'Royal Ark Mariners' degree.

In December 1999 the Candidate Bro.Paul Flowerday was the first memberof the Lord Harris Mark Lodge to be presented with such a copy.Since which every candidate of the Lord Harris Lodge has also received acopy on his Advancement into the Degree of a Mark Master Mason.
