Erasmus +

nejra: There is no single person that didn’t ask me „why lithuania?“ and I would say „why not?“ I’m the first student from Bosnia and Herzegovina to go on Erasmus to Vilnius. I can honestly say that this was one of the best decisions in my life so far. Going by yourself into the unknown and being independent, sharing your life with people from all around the world is an amazing feeling. I would recommend everybody to apply for Erasmus, to go out of their comfort zone and experience something new, something they will never forget.

alija: I definitely did not regret for a second that I accepted to go on this exchange and I’m in Istanbul. I say to my friends who are afraid to leave their parents and come here that there is a system in place for their protection and comfort. Professors and academic staff are super friendly. and this is a once in a lifetime experience. Do not hesitate to knock on the door of the International Relations Office - you have nothing to lose.

ajša:I’ve always had a desire to know other cultures. Travel is the best way to do that, but a trip is not enough to learn and understand the customs, culture, tradition and even the cuisine of a particular country. It takes a lot more time for that. This is the reason why I immediately decided on this adventure. Every day in this country offers something new, every day brings a new story, new people. I’m sure that this opportunity you have given us through IUS and ERaSMUS+ will be one of the most beautiful stories of our lives. From this land we will take countless memories and a great experience.

Emina: It’s hard to describe in words this experience, because it must be experienced. I’m glad to be a part of this, part of the city on two continents and one of the 14 million people in Istanbul. overcome all obstacles, breaks all stereotypes and sign up as soon as possible!

In the past two years, through the International Relations Office, IUS increased its international recognition and attractiveness of new forms of mobility. The Office progressively carried out negotiations to sign Erasmus+ and Mevlana exchange agreements in various fields of study with prominent universities from different regions of Europe and Turkey. By signing these bilateral agreements, IUS gained

rights to mobility of students as well as academic and administrative staff working in different scientific areas. For the first time in the history of the University, the

mobility of administrative staff and their professional development is provided.

Exchange at IUSOur students have the opportunity to achieve success in other countries, and spread the IUS name beyond the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In their opinion, the biggest advantage of student exchange is the discovery of new horizons, making contacts and learning other methods, as well as training in the field of their selected studies.

All interested students and employees of IUS can submit their applications to the International Relations office of the IUS and get detailed information about student and staff exchange.

aRMIn:

Since I started to study at IUS I wanted to go on exchange and live abroad in order to learn about other culture and meet different people. One day I saw that I can apply to Mevlana exchange program to go somewhere in Turkey and I decided to grab the chance. I studied at Akdeniz University, which has approximately 60,000 students. During my exchange semester I met a lot of local people, foreign students and students who were also on exchange from many African, Asian and Euro-pean countries. I became friends with many of the exchange students and often traveled together with them to other parts of Turkey. It was an amazing experience.

In early February 2016, Inter-national University of Sarajevo

(IUS) signed an agreement on cooperation in the framework of the Erasmus + and Mevlana

exchange program, with the renowned Yildiz Technical Univer-sity in Istanbul. The signed agreements will al-low for the exchange of students

and academic staff of IUS in the next academic year. This activ-ity is only one of many activities already initiated to establish cooperation with this prominent Turkish university. So far the cooperation referred to organiza-tion and mobilizing of mutual re-search projects, exchange of best ideas, experiences and practices.

In November 2015, IUS English Language and Lit-erature (ELIT) Professors, Assist. Prof. Dr. almasa Mulalić and Assist. Prof. Dr. nudžejma obralić taught at the prestigious Marmara University in Istanbul (Turkey), as visiting professors through Mevlana exchange program. During their stay, they held a seminar in applied linguistics and gave lectures to students of English Language and Literature Department (Education Depart-ment). Head of Department Assist. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Cumhur Çamlibel-acar and Assist. Prof. Dr. Dilek Uygun-Gökmen hosted distinguished professors in Turkey.

Professors exchanged experiences and discussed possibilities of working on new projects and research and achieved cooperation between the two English Language and Literature depart-ments. It is also important to emphasize that IUS professors find this academic staff exchange a very important and valuable experience.

TayFUn:

When I applied for the exchange I didn’t know any-thing about Sara-jevo. What I like most is friendliness of the people and, of course, burek. At IUS, the environ-ment is truly inter-national, and it’s a great advantage to study in English.

MUSTaFa:

This is my first time in Sarajevo and I fell in love with its nature, architecture, history, and art. The culture is really similar to Turkish culture, especially the cuisine. Bosnian people are very friendly, especially at the university. The most important part of this experience for me is that it provided me with self-confi-dence in my education.

For foreign students at IUS, it was a great oportunity for research and exploration of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.

last year, I entered Sciences po paris to begin my

master’s degree in European affairs. The atmosphere of the school was radically different from my previous year at the university Paris Sorbonne and it was really new for me. Sciences Po allowed a lot of scholar opportunities and among them the opportunity to do a gap-year, it means to do internships wherever you want during one year, between your first and your second year. This is exactly what I am doing currently at IUS.

The first time I went to Sarajevo, I was eight years old, visting my mother’s family all around BiH. It was five years after the war. At the entrance of the city, I saw this house totally ruined, the walls were riddled with bullets. I felt fascinated, more than words can say. I kept this mental picture until now, it never went away. And I don’t know how to explain but I think this experience guided me to work on the social traumas in post-war societies and especially in the ones which are linked to the European Union by the

European Neighbourhood Policy. I wanted to deal with the bonds between European Union and two countries, Lebanon and Bosnia and Herzegovina, to analyze the European implication in the cultural reconstruction process through topics as memory and grieving. In August 2015, I arrived in Beirut. I began my internship at L’Agenda Culturel (Cultural Agenda). I was charged with covering cultural events, writing articles and interviewing Lebanese cultural actors in order to make an overview

of the cultural situation in the country, which is quite catastrophic. It helped me to understand a lot about the Lebanese society. My vision was not to understand everything around me – six months are not enough – but these many interviews I did provided me different ways to think and consider the society I lived in. My approach was much more anthropological : hanging out with people, talking with them about everyday life topics… I remember once when I was at home with a friend - we were talking and suddenly we heard a huge noise of explosion. Our reactions were totally different: for him, it was a bombing and for me, it was something like a car crash. Because he lived the war and because I did not, we interpreted this explosion according to our experiences and memories. It was exactly this kind of moments that I liked to share because it revealed me much more things about the Lebanese society than studying by books.

I started to say to myself that I wanted to make a comparison

between Beirut and Sarajevo. I have been more often in Bosnia than Lebanon but when I arrived in Beirut, I did not feel like a stranger, as if this city sounded familiar for me. The energy of the people, the walls, the wealth of bars, cafés like suspended space-time, this way from people to laugh about everything, to feel light…

The representation of these two cities cannot be summarised by physical scars, ruins or walls riddled with bullets. It projects on the inhabitants’ faces, impacts on the souls. Finally, when I arrived here in Sarajevo, I found these similar messages: without being the same, of course, they keep this violence

in their expressions, use a kind of vandalism to be expressed and formulated.

Elias Khoury, Lebanese playwriting, novelist and critic, told once: « Participating in a projection of the last movie by Theo Angelopoulos, «Ulysses’ gaze», I thought I was traveling with the Greek director, in this region of the Balkans unknown for me, when suddenly the camera set down a familiar place: it was Beirut. I saw the camera walking in the destroyed streets of Beirut, I saw places that I knew like I knew their death smell. Then I discovered with the camera that it was not Beirut. The Beirut of the movie was Sarajevo. »

I have been much more in Bosnia than Lebanon but when I arrived in Beirut, I did not feel like a stranger, as if the city sounded familiar for me

alexandra Klinnik and Edouard Si-mon are students in a prestigious school of journalism in France, at ESJ Lille (École Supérieure de Journalisme de Lille). As part of a school project about « Walls and Borders », they chose to come in Bosna and Herzegovina with the intention of producing a feature on this topic. In order to do interviews with professionals, they turned to IUS. Why? Because it is an international university where the working language is English, which contributes to convergence and better understanding of people from all around the world and provides oppor-tunities to exchange views on important issues in a common language.

what does the topic « walls and Bor-ders» represent for you?

It is a very topical subject in the Euro-pean media and especially in light of the current migration with the refugees cri-sis. Some European countries are cam-paigning for the return of borders, some of them are closing to the migrants, the extreme right wing parties are increas-ing… All these facts provide and feed an atmosphere of tension. We have col-leagues who chose to go to the border between Slovenia and Croatia, between Israel and Palestine… We are trying to cover many different situations in all over the world to deal with this topic.

Have you ever traveled in Bosnia and Herzegovina before? If not, did you have some mental images about this country before coming here? what were they?

Edouard Simon: Never, it’s my first time here in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I have to confess that all my imagination was linked to the war between 1992-1995: bombings, bullet holes, divisions… And I’m quite surprised to see that people from different backgrounds are finally living today altogether, at least, in Sara-jevo.

alexandra Klinnik: I’m not totally sur-prised about the mentality, the coun-tryside, the cities, because my mother is from Croatia and lived here in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so she told me sto-ries, experiences... I could not say that it is the same atmosphere as in Croatia, of course, but I feel this place familiar. It is really important for me to be here because it would help me to understand my family history.

why Bosnia and Herzegovina could il-lustrate your topic?

Actually, our main question is to answer to « Who benefits from the walls?» and BiH sounded like evidence to deal with

our topic, above all in light of the Dayton Agreements which formalized the sepa-ration between communities, especially for the Bosnian Republika Srpska. More over, the Balkans are invisible in the western media, so we wanted to be in the field to confirm our representation of the country.

Finally, what have you noticed in Bos-nia and Herzegovina and what struck you the most regarding your analysis?

Even if the war is hopefully over, we can notice still stigmas and not only physi-cally. Young people seem to be really disenchanted and not interested in pol-ity. But this phenomenom is present not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we mean it is a general sense of resigna-tion, even in France. However, for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the question is more sensitive because of the nation-building accomplishments over the civil war and that is why we would like to focus our study on the political parties, Dayton agreements, clientelism and emphasize on all stratas of the society.
