From Father Mike

This weekend kicks off Vocations Awareness Week. Even in this time of scandal

surrounding past actions of bishops and priests, I am proud to be a Catholic priest,

and I have no problem inviting others to consider the priesthood, diaconate, or

religious life. Just because a few people made some very bad decisions does not

eliminate the holiness of the Church nor the need to serve others in Her name.

Today’s second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is

the ultimate priest, “…holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher

than the heavens.” All of us who are baptized make an offering of our lives in

order to participate in the priesthood of Christ. He then perfects our offering

through the ongoing effects of the giving of his own life on the cross. In other

words, the Church is not holy because of the cumulative holiness of her members

but because it is the Body of Christ, and He is indeed holy, “higher than the

heavens.” So we become holy as participants in the life of the Church, and some

eventually see that their pursuit of holiness is best lived out in service of the

Church. So I ask you this week to pray even more fervently in asking God for more

dedicated, holy priests, deacons, and consecrated men and women. May they

be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community, and respond

generously to God’s gift of a vocation.
