Introduction

Joab Jonah Friend was the third child of Andrew Coleman Friend and

Sarah Nancy Harden. Joab was the great grandson of “Old” John Friend, founder of

Friendsville and patriarch of the Garrett County Friend Family. Joab Friend was born in

Belmont, OH in 1821 Joab would move back to Allegany (Garrett) County, MD with his

father and mother and eventually marry Amy Sines in 1847. Joab Friend and Amy Sines,

with their twelve children, would live out their lives on a farm a few miles Southwest of

Friendsville, MD on a plot of land called Grime’s Point. Joab, Amy and their family were

described as follows: 1 They were pleasant to be with. Their lives were happy. They

were good people. I never heard of any quarrelling among them. They were

religious. They didn’t have so much in the way of wealth, but they knew how to take

care of what they had. Very clean and honorable. Uncle Joab was the great reader, a

traveler – had spent some time in intrigued with the characters of literature. Joab

and Amy rest in an idyllic cemetery found on their former farm. The cemetery rests on

the top of a bluff in a beautiful pine grove that was planted by Joab and where you can

hear the Youghiogheny River.

We have attempted to outline the recorded history of Joab Jonah Friend and

Amy Sines as well as their family. Personal histories, photographs, lands deed, wills,

military records and US Census records have been included in this text. It is our goal to

preserve the family history of Joab Jonah Friend and his family before it is lost to time.

As with our previous books on the Friend family, we have spent countless hours

reconstructing this family history from these multiple recorded sources. This project

began as a book about Joab Friend’s father Andrew Coleman Friend. However, due to

the volume of information the material the initial book was separated into three books

covering Andrew Coleman Friend 2, Joab Jonah Friend and Joab Friend’s brother

Jonathan Friend 3. Although thoroughly checked, there may be unintentional errors, for

which we truly apologize. We openly encourage additionally information and corrections

to this text.

On a more personal note, I have a vested interest in this book. Joab Friend and

Amy Sines were my great great great grandparent. Joab and Amy’s oldest child

Florence L. Friend would marry Joseph Harrison Friend, the son of Elijah Friend and

Elizabeth Smith. Florence and Joseph’s youngest surviving daughter was

Ola Merrill Friend. Ola Friend’s daughter (Josephine Esther Lyons) was my

grandmother, who I briefly knew in my youth. My mother always said that Josephine

was very proud of being a Friend.

In the name of God, Amen I, Joab Friend, of Garrett County, in the State of Maryland, being in poor health of body, and of sound and disposing mind, memory, and understanding, considering the certainty of death, and the uncertainty of the time these of, and being desirous of setting my worldly affairs, and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world, when it shall please God to call me hense, do therefore make and publish this, my last Will and testament, in manner and form following, that is to say. First and principally, I commit my soul in the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor, here in after named. After my debts and funeral charges are paid, I devise and bequeath as follows, Item: I give and bequeath to my son Joab Friend, my home farm, whereon I now dwell, and fully described in two deeds. first deed composed of part of Lots Nos. 3148 & 3277 and part of a tract of land called "Grimes Point" and containing Seventy seven and one fourth acres, for a full description of which efference is hereby made to deed from Andrew Friend and others to Joab Friend, dated September 26 1873. Filed and recorded Sept. 30th 1873, in Liber W.W. F. No-1 folio 189 one of the Records of Garrett County Maryland. Second deed being composed of part of a tract of land called "The Gleanings" and containing Twenty two acres and twenty five perches, conveyed to Joab Friend by the "Yough Manor Land Co" by deed dated July 17th 1890. Filed and recorded August 11th 1890, in Liber E.J.F. No 16 folio 176th, one of the Land Records of Garrett County Md. Save and excepting the house in which I now live and the garden and small out buildings connected thereto, which I hereby give and devise to my two daughters Theodosia and Lydia P. Friend during their lifetime or so long as they either of them desire to live in or occupy the same. Item: I give and bequeath to my two daughters Theodosia and Lydia P. Friend. All my house hold property or goods which I now have or may have at the time of my death. Item: I give and bequeath to my oldest daughter Florence L. Friend. Fifty dollars, to be paid her by my Executor here in after named, in one year after my death. Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah F. Ryland. And lastly, I so hereby constitute and appoint my son, Joab Friend to be soul Executor of this my last Will and testament, revoking and anniling all former Wills by me heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and testament. About the Authors

Patricia Ann (Friend) Thompson was born and raised in Garrett County,

Maryland. Pat’s first book on the Friend family was John Friend Sr. of

Friendsville, MD (2007), the patriarch of the Friend Family in Garrett County Maryland.

Pat is a descendant of John Friend Sr., through his sons John Jr. and Charles. Pat is also a

descendant of numerous Garrett County families such as Enlow, Harvey, Tasker,

Murphy, Upole and Thrasher. Pat is a Life Member (#889) of the FFAA, currently

serving as 1st Vice President of the organization. Pat is a member of the National Society

of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Youghiogheny Glades Chapter (through

John Friend Sr.) and a member of The Swedish Colonial Society. Pat currently lives in

Frederick County, Maryland with husband, John (Scoop) Thompson and their three dogs.

Patrick T. Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in Western

Maryland. Patrick is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.), West Virginia

University (M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Patrick is also a descendant of

numerous Garrett County families such as Echard, Harvey, Hinebaugh, Glotfelty,

McRobie and Wilson. Patrick’s first book on the Garrett County Friends centered on the

maps and papers of William H.H. Friend. His second book was John Friend Jr. of

Friend’s Delight, Sang Run, MD, son of John Friend Sr. Patrick is currently the 2nd of

the FFAA as well as a Life Member (#1102). Joab Friend and Amy Sines were Pat

Smith’s 3x great grandparents. Patrick lives in Frederick County, Maryland with his wife,

Roxanne and daughter Emma Gustav Smith.
