Mr. Iglesias has several Cuban collections of a topical nature, but his main one is based on the medical sciences. Biographical notes on three Cuban women who offered their services as nurses to care for the wounded in field hospitals of the Cuban Liberation Army during the Cuban wars of independence fought against Spain and who have been honored in Cuban stamps and commemorative cancellations. Mariana Grajales has been honored in a stamp (Scott 1388, Edifil 1628, Yvert 1268) and in several Mother’s Day postal cards (need to identify), and Isabel Rubio Díaz and Adela Ascuy Labrador have been honored with commemorative cancellations and cachets some of which are illustrated in the article. <ACKE9412> Ackein, G. "The Y 1/4 of Cuba" http://www.philat.com/biblio/Scans/ACKE9412.pdf Stamp Collector’s Fortnightly (SCF), Vol.1, No.6, 15 Dec 1894, pp.46‐47. Translation of an article in the Echo de la Timbrologie. The English translation printed in SCF is followed by a critique written by G. A. Padro. This is an early article describing both the 1855‐56 and the 1860 surcharges of the interior mails of Havana and noting that these were the first officially issued surcharged stamps in the world. The article incorrectly interprets the Y in the surcharge to mean “And” but correctly describes the intended use of the stamps. Another error in the article is the indication that the surcharge can be found on the three types of paper on which the first issue of Cuba was printed, when in fact it does not exist on the 1856 issue with crossed lines watermark referred to in the article as a “diamond” watermark. The article ends with a description of some of the varieties of the surcharge known at the time and of some of the forgeries that soon appeared on the market. Prices in British pounds are given for the standard varieties of the surcharge. The article is followed by a critique by G.A. Padro correcting Mr. Ackein’s interpretation of the letter Y in the surcharge and providing additional information on surcharge measurements and varieties, but also incorrectly reporting the existence of the surcharge on paper with a “lozenges” watermark corresponding to the crossed lines watermark paper of the 1856 issue on which the surcharge does not exist. <BARR90103> Barreras, Antonio "Documentos Inéditos sobre el correo interior de La Habana, en 1855" ("Unpublished Documents on the Inner City Mails of Havana in 1855") http://www.philat.com/biblio/Scans/BARR90103.pdf El Curioso Americano, 3rd Epoch, Yr.2, No.3, Mar 1901, pp.47‐53 (7), Span. Article on the origin and meaning of the Y 1/4 surcharged stamps used for the payment of postage on letters sent within the limits of the city of Havana in 1855. The article gives a brief overview of the establishment of the inner city mails of Havana and the surcharging of regular 2 reales stamps with the Y 1/4 surcharge for use in payment of inner city mail postage. The article then proceeds to reproduce several key government documents describing the establishment of the inner city mails and the measures that needed to be taken to that effect. The connection to medicine of some of the items included is indirect, as in the case of tobacco and coffee slogans whose tie to medicine is that their derivatives nicotine and caffeine are drugs used in medicine. This is an excellent compilation of items related to medicine in Cuban philately.

‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ I also want to bring your attention to an important upcoming Spanish philatelic aution by the Barcelona auction house of Soler y Llach who are longtime supporters of the CPSA with their advertisements in CPSA journals and bulletins. The auction will be one of three auctions they will hold on February 4 and is titled "Important Stamps and Covers of the World" and it contains an important holding of Cuban items in lots 1106 to 1137. Worthy of note among the lots offered are lots 1127 to 1131 and 1137. Lot 1127 is an award winning collection of Spanish Cuba postage stamps fiscally used on documents, ex Silvia García‐Frutos. The article presents a diagram identifying the placement on a sheet of 170 stamps of the 22 varieties of the surcharge identified by Prats and illustrates each of the 22 varieties. Only one position in the sheet (postition IX‐2) is left open because the type of surcharge in that position was unknown at the time of publication of the article (Prats has since identified the type of surcharge in that position). The article then goes on to explain the use of a table the author has devised to facilitate the identification of the position of the surcharge in the sheet once the type of the surcharge has been

established by comparison with the 22 types shown. This table lists the possible positions in the sheet for each type of surcharge so that the reader can then focus on plating the surcharge by studying the underlying characteristics of the base stamp. This is further facilitated by the inclusion in the article of detailed illustrations of the identifying characteristics of the base stamps for all positions that have distinguishing identifying characteristics. Overall, this is an excellent tool for the plating of these surcharges. The expertizing exercise is the following: examine the surcharge on the offered stamp closely, compare it with some of the similar surcharges in my archive, and make a judgement on whether the surcharge on the stamp being offered is genuine. In my opinion the surcharge on the stamp being offered is a forgery. Compare the formation of the letters in "Habilitado" with the formation of the same letters in some of the genuine surcharges in the archive and note that the letters in the offered stamp are poorly formed. Additionally, there is no period following the word "cents" at the bottom of the surcharge. Furthermore, the Sismondo certificate claims that the stamp also has a Philatelic Foundation certificate. My question is Why would anyone bother to issue a second certificate on top of a renowned PF certificate? Why advertise the stamp for sale using a Sismondo certificate if a PF certificate is available? It makes no sense. The union of all of these factors firms my opinion that surcharge is a forgery. I would like to hear the opinions of some of the readers. En mi opinión la sobrecarga que se ofrece es una falsificación. However, let me bring to your attention that there are other 2nd Printing Position 2 stamps illustrated in the inventory and that the words "HABILITADO" and "cents." in all Position 2 stamps of the 2nd Printing should match. Therefore, you can use some of the other images of 2nd Printing Position 2 stamps in the inventory to compare the words "HABILITADO" and "cents." against those of the Scott 179G stamp being offered in eBay. This verification technique is valid for all stamps of the same position in each printing, so that for comparison purposes you don't necessarily have to have another example of the exact same stamp you are trying to expertize‐‐you can compare the stamp being expertized with other examples from the same position and the same printing. Since I found it odd that the seller would use a certificate from a stamp dealer to support his offering in eBay instead of using the more reputable Philatelic Foundation certificate mentioned in the dealer's own certificate, I sent an e‐mail to the PF asking them to verify the existence of the certificate. Today I got a response from them telling me that a certificate #17310 for the same stamp was indeed issued by the PF dated 3 June 1963, but that since all of the signers of the certificate are either retired or deceased, the PF cannot guarantee the certificate's accuracy. In spite of the two certificates, I still feel that the surcharge on the stamp being offered in eBay is a forgery, so it is up to you all to study the matter further and send me your own opinions to see if we can reach a consensus. Debido a que me pareció raro que el vendedor usase un certificado de un comerciante para apoyar su venta en eBay en vez de usar el certificado de la más confiable y reconocida Philatelic Foundation que menciona el propio certificado del comerciante, le envié un mensaje de e‐mail a la Philatelic Foundation preguntándoles si en verdad existe el supuesto certificado emitido por ellos. Hoy me contestaron que en efecto el certificado existe, que su número de control es 17310 y que fue emitido con fecha 3 de junio de 1963, pero a la vez me comentaron que debido a que todos los expertos que firmaron el certificado están o jubilados o ya fallecidos, la Philatelic Foundation no puede dar garantía de su veracidad. After sending my last e‐mail on the subject I talked about the stamp with Peter Robertson, who is an expert on these surcharges, and he too didn't like it. Fortunately the selling price was not exhorbitant, and the stamp is quite a conversation piece... I would like to warn all eBay buyers that the California firm called Rubystamps is currently offering for sale in eBay several eye‐catching items of Y 1/4 surcharges that are all forgeries from the Prats collection. These items were previously offered by H.R. Harmer in a May 27, 2007 auction together with other Prats material, but were withdrawn from the sale when Prats advised them that they were all fakes. After the sale I offered Harmer to buy the lot, but they refused, and as I feared they are now trying to sell it again through Rubystamps. By the way, Rubystamps is also currently selling a Puerto Príncipe cover that is also a fake.

Quiero advertirles a todos los compradores en eBay que la firma Californiana que se llama Rubystamps está ofreciendo en estos momentos varias piezas con sobrecargas Y 1/4 que son todas falsificaciones provenientes de la colección de Ignacio Prats. Estas piezas las ofreció inicialmente la casa H.R. Harmer en una subasta del 27 de mayo del 2007 junto con otras piezas de la colección de Prats, pero fueron retiradas antes de la subasta cuando el Sr. Prats les informó que todas eran falsas proveniente de un lote de piezas falsas de referencia de su colección. Yo ofrecí comprarle a Harmer las piezas falsas para retirarlas del mercado, pero rehusaron hacerlo, y me temo que lo que han hecho es tratar un año después de salir del material a través de Rubystamps. De paso, Rubystamps también está ofreciendo al mismo tiempo un sobre de Puerto Príncipe que también es falso. I have just received news that my FILACUBA Website and my Bibliography Website have both received vermeil awards at the Efiro 2008 International Philatelic Exhibition in Budapest, Romania. A lot of work has been put on both Websites that I continue to upgrade and make available to all Cuban philatelists free of charge and it is satisfying to see that the work is appreciated. In the process of looking for the information he requested I went through my own collection of Cuban town postmarks and found quite a number of these numbered datestamps and decided to build an inventory of these datestamps with links to their images based on my collection; the illustrations in the Ríos Peset article; an earlier inventory that Dr. Yamil H. Kouri, Ignacio Prats, and I had published in The Cuban Philatelist in July of 1998; and additional information later provided by Silvia García‐Frutos and Jorge Marí in the Last Third 2001 issue of the same journal. Durante el proceso de buscarle la información solicitada, revisé mi propia colección de marcas postales de pueblos cubanos y encontré una gran cantidad de ejemplos de estos fechadores y decidí hacer un inventario de ellos basado en mi propia colección; en las ilustraciones en el artículo de Ríos Peset; en un inventario de estos fechadores que el Dr. Yamil H. Kouri, Ignacio Prats y yo publicamos en la revista The Cuban Philatelist de julio de 1998 y en información adicional suministrada por Silvia García‐Frutos y Jorge Marí en otro artículo en el tercer número del 2001 de la misma revista. Several members will also be exhibiting their Cuban collections at the show, so it will be a great opportunity to view some outstanding Cuban philatelic material and learn from the exhibits and the presentations that will take place during our meeting. Traditionally at our annual meetings, Society members also get together for dinner Friday evening at one of the local restaurants to have an opportunity to catch up with old friends and we plan to continue with this tradition. In particular, I call your attention to the archive of the rare 5th printing of which only a total of 900 stamps are reported to have been surcharged. Because of their low numbers, I have tried to obtain images of as many surviving examples of this printing as possible both from existing collections and from auction catalogs of as many sales as I have on record. In doing so, I have traced the “pedigree” of all stamps through all of the sales in which they have appeared. This archive currently includes 270 items that if we were to assume they are all genuine (something that we cannot guarantee) would account for 30% of the total of 900 stamps that were surcharged. Arturo specialized in the postal stationery of Spain, Cuba, and Costa Rica. His exhibit of Spanish postal stationery won gold medals at several intenational exhibitions, among them, Washington 2006, España 2007 in Malaga, Spain, and Efiro 2008 in Romania, and I believe will also be exhibited postumously at London 2010 where it will be taken by one of his sons. His collections of Cuban and Costa Rican postal stationery were equally impressive, but he did not have a chance to prepare them for exhibition. Arturo was a very special person and will be sorely missed among his friends and family.

Es con gran pesar que les notifico de la defunción de uno de nuestros miembros más activos y un gran filatelista y amigo, Arturo Martín de Nicolás, quien falleció tras una digna batalla contra una variante muy agresiva de cáncer de la próstata, el pasado miércoles 18 de febrero de 2009. Arturo se especializaba en los enteros postales de España, Cuba y Costa Rica. Su exhibición de enteros postales de España obtuvo medallas de oro en varias exhibiciones internacionales, entre ellas Washington 2006, España 2007 en Málaga y Efiro 2008 en Rumania y también creo que será exhibida póstumamente en Londres 2010, donde será llevada por uno de sus hijos. Sus colecciones de enteros postales de Cuba y Costa Rica también son formidables, pero no tuvo la oportunidad de prepararlas para exhibirlas. Arturo era una persona muy especial y se extrañará enormemente entre sus amigos y familiares. During that effort we have come to question the existence of Columbus Specimen envelopes of this period printed on paper with the watermark USPOD '99. I am attaching a listing of these envelopes that was proposed to be included in the catalog, until the real existence of these envelopes was questioned. The listing was derived from reports of sales of these envelopes in auction catalogs, but after further inquiry most of these reports have proven to be incorrect and the envelopes offered have been determined to be from the set of Specimens of these envelopes from the Republic. Among the sales cited there was Auction #65 of the CPSA offering two

such envelopes as lots 101 and 102. If you by chance were the seller or buyer of these lots, we would like to obtain confirmation from you that the envelopes in those lots were indeed printed on paper with the watermark USPOD '99. Additionally, if you by chance have any such envelopes in your collection, we would like to get informed of their denomination, color of paper, and size. Un grupo de nosotros ha estado trabajando en poner al día la sección de Cuba del catálogo de enteros postales editado por la United Possessions Philatelic Society. Durante ese trabajo, hemos llegado a cuestionar la existencia de sobres con el sello de Colón marcados "Specimen" en letras de imprenta impresos en papel con la marca de agua USPOD '99. Adjunto la lista de estos sobres que se proponía incluir en el catálogo hasta que cuestionamos la existencia de los sobres. La lista se derivó de listados en catálogos de subastas filatélicas pasadas, pero después de indagar un poco más, la mayoría de los supuestos sobres Specimen de Colón americanos han resultado ser del juego similar que se produjo durante la República.
