JOURNAL OF CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Correspondence. Submit manu-scripts in duplicate (original andone copy) to ASM PublicationsOffice, 1913 I St., N. W., Wash-ington, D.C. 20006.

General policy. Any manuscriptsubmitted must be a report of un-published original research or clin-ical investigation, which is notbeing considered for publicationelsewhere. Each manuscriptshould present the results of anindependent, cohesive study;numbered series papers are dis-couraged.

The "editorial style" of theJournal essentially follows theCBE Style Manual (3rd ed.,AIBS, 1972). Genetics symbolsshould essentially follow the rec-ommendations of Demerec et al.(Genetics 54:61, 1966). Bio-chemical nomenclature, includingabbreviations and symbols, shouldfollow the recommendations ofthe IUPAC-IUB Commission onBiochemical Nomenclature (CBN)and the Instructions to Authors ofJ. Biol. Chem. and Arch. Bio-chem. Biophys. (first issue of eachyear), which are based upon theCBN Recommendations and con-tain a list thereof. Reprints ofthese Recommendations and ad-vice on biochemical and chemicalnomenclature are available fromthe NRC Office of BiochemicalNomenclature (W. E. Cohn,Director), Biology Division, OakRidge Nat'l. Lab., Box Y, OakRidge, Tenn. 37830 (phone: 615-483-8611, Ext. 3-7514). Nor-mally, abbreviations (except thoseof standard units of measurementand symbols of the elements)should be defined and introducedparenthetically at first use in thetext. Enzyme activities should beexpressed in the terms set out inCBN's Enzyme Nomenclature(1972) (Elsevier Scientific Pub-lishing Co.). Lengths, weights, volumes, and molarities shouldmake use of the prefixes m, g, n,and p (for 10-3, 10-6, 10-9, and1012, respectively), where applica-ble, avoiding such compound pre-fixes as m,u and ,u,. Metric unitsshould be employed as much aspossible. The Editors reserve theprivilege of editing manuscripts tomake them conform to the above-mentioned stylistic conventions.

Form of manuscript. All partsof the manuscript should be typeddouble-space or, preferably, tri-ple-space. Most manuscripts can

and should be divided into thefollowing sections: Abstract, In-troduction, Materials and Meth-ods, Results, Discussion, Ac-knowledgements, and LiteratureCited. Only one weight of heading(paragraph lead-in) should beused within each section.

Title. A single statement of thesubject of a paper is preferred to amain title-subtitle arrangement. Ashort version of the title (no morethan 46 characters and spaces)should be supplied for use as arunning head.

Abstract. An Abstract appearsat the beginning of each paper. The Abstract should not exceed250 words.

Literature Cited. In the text, references are cited by number. The Literature Cited sectionshould be typed in alphabeticalorder, by first author, and num-bered. Each reference should in-clude the title of the article andinclusive pagination. Names ofjournals are abbreviated accord-ing to Bibliographic Guide forEditors & Authors (AmericanChemical Society, 1974). Litera-ture citations should be restrictedto closely pertinent papers. Cita-tions of abstracts, theses, "unpub-lished data," "personal commun-ications," and "in press" will notbe accepted in the LiteratureCited.

Tables. Each table should betyped on a separate page. Thedata should be arranged so thatcolumns of like material readdown, not across. The headingsshould be sufficiently clear so thatthe meaning of the data will beunderstandable without referenceto the text. Explanatory footnotesare permitted, but detailed de-scriptions of the experiments arenot. The materials and methodsused to gain the data shouldproperly remain in the section ofthat name.

Figures. A complete set of fig-ures, preferably glossy photo-graphs, should accompany each ofthe two copies of the manuscript.Graphs (submit as photographs)should be finished drawings notneeding further artwork or type-setting. Absolutely no part of agraph should be typewritten (ex-cept the legend, which should betyped on a separate page). Eachfigure should be numbered and

should include the name of theauthor, either in the margin or onthe back (marked lightly with asoft pencil). All lettering should bedone with a lettering set. Mostgraphs will be reduced to 6.6 cmin width, and all elements inthe drawing should be prepared towithstand this reduction. The led-end of the figure should provi eenough information so that thefigure is understandable withoutreference to the text. Experimen-tal details from Materials andMethods should not be repeatedin figure legends.

Nomenclature of microorga-nisms. In general, the nomencla-ture for bacteria presented inBergey's Manual of DeterminativeBacteriology (8th ed., 1974) isused. If an author challenges thisnomenclature, his own judgmentwill be followed, but the name inBergey's Manual should follow inparentheses the first time thename is used in the text and inthe Abstract. Papers which in-clude extensive taxonomic mate-rial (e.g., description of new taxa)will not be published in this jour-nal. The proper place for publica-tion of taxonomic material is theInternational Journal of System-atic Bacteriology (IJSB), which ispublished by the ASM for the In-ternational Association of Micro-biological Societies. If the mainthrust of such a paper is not tax-onomy, the paper should be di-vided, the taxonomy portion be-ing submitted to IJSB and theother portion to this journal.

Notes. The accepted form forNotes is somewhat different fromthe foregoing. Contributors shouldconsult a recent issue of the Jour-nal for style. Notes should not ex-ceed 500 words. The abstractshould not exceed 25 words.

Copyright. Once a paper hasbeen published in the Journal, which is a copyrighted publication, the legal ownership of all parts ofthe paper, including the illustra-tions, has passed from the authorto ASM. If the same author, orany author, wishes to republishmaterial previously published inthe Journal, he must first receivewritten permission from ASM.

Reprints. Reprints (in multiplesof 100) may be purchased by con-tributors. A table showing thecost of reprints, and an orderform, will be sent with the proof.
