In the Calendar that follows, which is adapted from that of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, there is both a normal course of everyday readings and a sequence proper to higher holy days, which are chiefly the various Lord’s Days and the major feasts and fasts of the church. The lessons proper to the higher holy days – that is, belonging to those days – take priority over the usual course of readings, but sometimes a Saturday or a Monday can be used to double up on readings so as to avoid an unnecessary gap in the reading of the holy Scriptures.

In the university setting, of course, not every day may be free for students to gather for both Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, but it is hoped that said students will either read the Scriptures on their own or else find suitable points at which to, say, use the morning lessons in the public saying of Evening Prayer, if that be convenient. It is seemly, in any case, that those who cannot attend daily prayers should not be hindered entirely from prayer: an alternative as simple as the Apos-tles’ Creed followed by the Lord’s Prayer will at least foster a prayerful heart, though it be not as full a participation in public prayer, and can be used by the Christian who wishes to join his heart with those of his brethren who are employing themselves together in prayer. Since the business of this booklet is not private devotions but public prayer, so much will suffice on that point.

For the reading of the Collect of the Day, sometimes there will be more than one collect to be read. In the second week of Advent, for ex-ample, the Collect for the First Sunday of Advent is to be read after the Collect for the Second Sunday of Advent. Likewise, on 27 December, the feast day of Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist, first will be read the collect proper to his commemoration, and then the collect which remembers the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ; and on All Saints’ Day will be read first the Collect for All Saints’ Day, and then the collect for the Sunday whose week it is. Moving through these collects, together with the Scriptures, will bring to mind the great themes of our faith: from Advent to Trinity, the life and doctrine of Christ; after Trinity, our growth in holiness after the pattern, and in the body, of our Savior.

Saint Andrew the Apostle

Almight y God, who gave such grace to your holy Apostle Saint An-drew, that he readily obeyed the calling of your Son Jesus Christ, & fol-lowed him without delay; Grant to us all, that we, being called by your holy Word, may forthwith give up ourselves obediently to fulfill the holy commandments; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Thomas the Apostle

Almight y and everliving God, who for the more confirmation of the faith did suffer your holy Apostle Thomas to be doubtful in your Son’s resurrection; Grant us so perfectly, & without all doubt, to be-lieve in your Son Jesus Christ, that our faith in your sight may nev-er be reproved. Hear us, O Lord, through the same Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, now and for evermore. Amen.

The Conversion of Saint Paul

O G od, who, through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Saint Paul, have caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout the world; Grant, we entreat you, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show forth our thankfulness to you for the same, by following the holy doctrine which he taught; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Presentation of Christ in the Temple

Almight y & everliving God, we humbly entreat your Majesty, that, as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple in sub-stance of our flesh, so may we be presented to you with pure and clean hearts, by the same your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Matthias the Apostle

O Almight y God, who in the place of the traitor Judas chose your faithful servant Matthias to be of the number of the twelve Apostles; Grant that your Church, being always preserved from false Apostles, may be ordered and guided by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Annunciation of the blessed Virgin Mary.

We entreat you, O Lord, pour your grace into our hearts; that, as we have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought to the glory of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Mark the Evangelist

O Almight y God, who have instructed your holy Church with the heavenly doctrine of your Evangelist Saint Mark; Give us grace, that, not being like children carried away with every blast of vain doctrine, we may be established in the truth of your holy Gospel; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Philip and Saint James, Apostles

O Almight y God, whom truly to know is everlasting life; Grant us perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life; that, following the steps of your holy Apostles, Saint Philip & Saint James, we may steadfastly walk in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Barnabas the Apostle

O Lord God Almighty, who did endue your holy Apostle Barnabas with singular gifts of the Holy Ghost; Do not leave us, we entreat you, destitute of your manifold gifts, nor yet of grace to use them always to your honor and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint John Baptist

Almight y God, by whose providence your servant John Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of your Son our Savior, by preaching of repentance; Make us so to follow his doctrine & holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth’s sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Peter the Apostle

O Almight y God, who by your Son Jesus Christ did give to your Apostle Saint Peter many excellent gifts, and command him earnest-ly to feed your flock; Make, we entreat you, all Bishops and Pastors diligently to preach your holy Word, and the people obediently to fol-low the same, that they may receive the crown of everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint James the Apostle

Grant, O merciful God, that as your holy Apostle Saint James, leav-ing his father and all that he had, without delay was obedient to the calling of your Son Jesus Christ, and followed him; so we, forsaking all worldly and carnal affections, may be evermore ready to follow your holy commandments; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Transfiguration of Christ

O G od, who on the mount did reveal to chosen witnesses your only-begotten Son wonderfully transfigured, in clothing white and glister-ing; Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may be permitted to behold the King in his beauty, who

with you, O Father, and you, O Holy Ghost, lives and reigns, one God, world without end. Amen.

Saint Bartholomew the Apostle

O Almight y and everlasting God, who gave to your Apostle Bar-tholomew grace, truly to believe and to preach your Word; Grant, we entreat you, to your Church, to love that Word which he believed, and both to preach and receive the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

O Almight y God, who by your blessed Son called Matthew from the receipt of taxes to be an Apostle and Evangelist; Grant us grace to forsake all covetous desires, and inordinate love of riches, and to fol-low the same your Son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Saint Michael and all Angels

O everl asting God, who have ordained and constituted the ser-vices of Angels & men in a wonderful order; Mercifully grant, that as your holy Angels alway do you service in heaven, so by your appoint-ment they may help and defend us on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Luke the Evangelist

Almight y God, who called Luke the Physician, whose glorying is in the Gospel, to be an Evangelist, and Physician of the soul; May it please you, that, by the wholesome medicines of the doctrine deliv-ered by him, all the diseases of our souls may be healed; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles

O Almight y God, who have built your Church upon the founda-tion of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head

cornerstone; Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All Saints’ Day

O Almight y God, who have knit together your elect in one com-munion and fellowship, in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord; Grant us grace so to follow your blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys, which you have prepared for those who unfeignedly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
