FOREWORD It is to be expected that in the preparation of a work of this kind, where there are so few authentic sources from which to gather information, many omissions will be found and some corrections will be in order. However, with the material I have been able to find, I have worked diligently to piece together something of the early history of our family and the settlement to which they came. I have gathered my information from older members of the family and from the early histories of Northampton, Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties. I have searched records of property transfers and letters of administration to be found in these counties. My search has led me into Trenton and Flemington, New Jersey, looking for our John's family. I feel that no point is to be gained in looking further. My thought has been to map out as clearly as possible the relation of each to other members of the family rather than gather histories and information of individuals. In most cases the dates of births and deaths are lacking. Perhaps other members of the family I have been unable to contact might be able to supply some of them. Those I have, I have taken mostly from cemetery markers in and about Monroe County and from available family Bibles. I wish to thank members of the family who have been so kind in assisting me with contributions of information and I want to especially thank Jennie Price Mawhinney, Leona Price, Jesse Price and Arthur Price for their cooperation in the completing of this Genealogical History. I would like to pay tribute to the memory of Mary Price (Mrs. Willard Price) who passed away December 7, 1947, in her 43rd year. She was keenly interested in the early family history and passed on much information from her father, Maurice, who lived near the old Price Homestead. With love, I dedicate my work to Ray and our children ---- Jane, Doris, Raymond and Richard Price. Violet Hallett Price.

THE FAMILY OF PRICE

Copied from Ancient Records The ancient cognomen of the Price Family was styled "Ap-Rhys" ("Ap" being the prefix meaning "son of") which in the course of time was changed to “Ap Ryce”, “Apryce”, “Pryce” and finally Anglicized "Price". At Rhylas, Wales, their descendants still live and spell their name Pryce. They are a very ancient family and are descended in a direct line from Marchwesthian, a famous Prince and Chieftain of the House of "Ap-Rhys" of Rhylas, North Wales, who served with great distinction with Gryffyd Ap-Cynam at the beginning of the Eleventh Century. The ancient home and country seat of the family, known as "Rhuddlan Castle", has been in the possession of the family and has been the home of the Chieftains of the family from a remote period. In later times many of the descendants of this princely house distinguished themselves both in the State and upon the field. Sir Robert Pryce, Baronet and Knight, it appears by the old records, was cross bearer to Cardinal Wolsey, and was fifth in descent from Cedric Vaughn, of the line of Edward III, King of England. Various members of this noble family served in the office of High Sheriff Marshall of England, and Governor of the Tower, Master of the Horse, and many of the members espoused heiresses from among nobility, making the family rich and powerful. Sir Edward Vivian Price fought with the Crusaders under the gallant Richard Cour Le Lion in the Holy Land, and was knighted by him on the field of battle for bravery. Sir Henry Tudor Price fought at the Battle of Agincourt in the war with France. Many other members of the family distinguished themselves on the field of battle. They inter-married with the noble houses of "Howard, Duke of Norfolk", "Wylly", "Lenox", "Cardigan", and the Ap-Roberts of "Glynn du Wydd" --- a son of whom, Sir Percival Glendale Price, became Baron of the Exchequer, and es-poused to the beautiful Countess of Montrose. The family has always been distinguished for their high sense of honor, which they have always jealously guarded. Not a stain of dishonor or misalliance mars the fair record of a long line of gallant knights, noble gentlemen and courtly dames. In 1690 two of the members of the family emigrated to America. Here they, with many other English settlers, located in New Jersey and became the founders of Elizabethtown, now known as the city of Elizabeth, so named in honor of Queen Elizabeth.

GOGERDDAN (Pronounced Go-Gelthan) An incident in the Early History of the Price family, taken from Ancient Records. The Lord of Gogerddan Castle went to battle with the English, accompanied by his son and heir, the young Prince. In the midst of the conflict the boy became frightened, ran from the field and returned home. His mother met him in the large hall, which was hung round with family portraits. She rebuked him and said, "Craven that thou art, I had rather thou was't brought to me dead than that thou shouds't return a coward. Return instantly to thy father's side or renounce the name of Pryce forever, and forfeit thy mother's love. Gaze thou upon the face of thy ancestors, perhaps thou mayst gain courage and become a Pryce once more". The young man was overcome with shame at his cowardice and said, "I have no fear now. Kiss and bless me, my mother, and I will return to the battlefield - rejoin my father and prove that I am worthy of my name and to be called Pryce and thy son". The portraits on the wall seem to smile and say, "Never so long as water runs in Wales shall Pryce become extinct. The race of brave men and noble women shall last until the end of time". The lad was slain on the battlefield and brought home dead to his mother, who upon seeing the body, cried in agony of remorse, "Oh, my son - my son – God forgive me". But the portraits seemed to smile again, as if in approval of his heroic conduct. The Castle of Goderddan is very ancient and situated near Aberystwith, near Cardiganshire, Wales, and the village takes its name from the Castle. It has been in the possession of the family- for several hundred years, and their descendants who still dwell in the castle are a branch of the House of Ap-Rys of Rhuddlan Castle, Ryles, North Wales.

JOHN PRICE Since it has always been understood that John Price, the Founder of our Monroe County Prices, came from Gardenville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, my search for information started among the old records in the Bucks County Court House and the Bucks County Historical Society. Here I found that John Price had, with Ichabod Wilkinson, witnessed the will of one Casper Clatree in Gardenville, Plumstead Township in the year 1748. (Will Book No. 2 page 142) To be able to witness a will he presumably was twenty-one years of age at that time, so I put his birth date down as being between 1725 and 1730. Jennie Price Mawhinney has recorded his birth date as 1728, but does not remember where she found it or who told her. It sounds all right according to my findings. Also, to be found among the same Historical Records, is the will of Joseph Wilkinson (son of Ichabod) dated 10-11-1785 and proved 10-28-1785, in which he mentions his sister, Sarah, -wife of John Price. It was known that John Price had married a Sarah Wilkinson. One of her grandsons, the father of Jesse, was named Wilkinson Price. An interesting account of the Wilkinson Family is to be found. They came into Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from Connecticut and belonged to the Society of Friends. Joseph Wilkinson, John Price's brother-in-law, was married in Buckingham Friends Meeting 18-11- 1778. (Early Friends Records followed the English custom of writing day-month-year.) To be found among the Buckingham and Falls Friends Meeting records are many people by the name of Price. Many of them were admitted to these Meetings from Hunderton County, New Jersey, which is just across the Delaware River from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Prominent among them was David Price. David Price and his wife, Sarah lived in Hopewell Township, Hunderton County, New Jersey. He died in 1768 leaving children, Nathan, James, Rebecca, Ellen, Sarah and Susannah. Nathan was a Revolutionary War Veteran and lived near Flemington, New Jersey. James settled in Bucks County. Susannah married Joseph Mahr and resided in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Rebecca married Daniel Price, and Ellen married Benjamen Stackhouse. Both moved into Pennsylvania. This information was found in the Bucks County Court House. Sarah Price married James Burson in the Buckingham Friends Meeting in the year 1758. Their daughter, Ann, married Jacob Postens and moved to Middle Smithfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The two grandsons of James and Sarah

Burson married Deborah and Jemima Stroud, daughters of Col. Jacob Stroud of Stroudsberg1, Pennsylvania. Susannah Price was admitted to Buckingham Friends Meeting from Kingswood Township, Hunderton County, New Jersey. She was born 1724 and died unmarried in her 83rd year. James Price2 was known to be a brother of John Price. He came with his brother to settle on the Brodheads Creek in the year 1764 and later married John's daughter, Nancy, and moved on to Michigan in 1800. To be found in the Office of the Secretary of State, Trenton, New Jersey, in Volume 16, page 162, file 887J, is the will of John Price, Maidenhead Township, Hunderton County, New Jersey. This will is dated April 19, 1773, proved September 14, 1773. John Price, in his will, mentions his wife Mary and children James, David, Letitia, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Susannah and son John "eldest and away from home". This John Price might have been the father of our John Price, and the above mentioned children could have been his brothers and sisters. I believe they were.

Queen Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, ascended the throne of England in 1558. She reigned for a period of 45 years and died in 1603. Her reign was noted for material prosperity and advanced culture for the English people. In 1660 Charles II was called back to the English throne where he at once took advantage of the popular reaction against the narrowness and intolerance of the Puritans. The result was that the society of his Court became notoriously corrupt and profligate. When he died in 1685, leaving no legitimate heirs, his brother, James II Duke of York succeeded him. James II was no better than Charles, so in 1688 he was banished to France and his daughter Mary, with her husband William of Orange took over the rule. It was during this Revolution, when England was in a state of turmoil, that a group of settlers came to this country and settled what is now known as Elizabeth, New Jersey. It was then called Elizabethtown in honor of Queen Elizabeth, of whose reign they carried pleasant memories. Among these original settlers were Benjamen Price and his son, also called Benjamen. Having checked on two of the primary sources of information relative to New Jersey settlers, namely, the first Colonial Documents prior to 1700, and the abstracts of wills from 1600 to 1800, we have these findings: Benjamen Price, Sr., born about 1630, owned land in Elizabeth as early as 1679. He died between 1705 and 1712 as his will is dated August 30th, 1705, and was probated 1712. He mentions the following children: Benjamen, Thomas, Daniel, Ephraim3, John, Mary and Damaris. His son John was made executor and a wit Benjamen Price 3rd. John Price left a will dated May 10th, 1739, in which he calls himself "aged and infirm". He mentions the following children: John, Thomas, Abraham, Timothy, Jemima Anne, Prudence and Mary. He was born about 1660, therefore, was around 79 years of age. Benjamen, Jr., left no will, but Benjamen 3rd died about 1759 and his will shows George, Benjamen and John under age. (Therefore, not our John.) Daniel had no children. Ephraim died about 1737 and his will mentions children: Lydia, Ephraim, Isaac, James, Samuel, Nathan, Ebenezer and Daniel. John Price of Maidenhead, Hunderton County, New Jersey, either the son or grandson of "aged and infirm" John Price died 1773, mentioning in his will his wife Mary, whom he married 1727, and their children: John, David, James, Letitia, Mary, Sarah,

Elizabeth and Susanne. John, "eldest and away from home" was left 10 pounds. I believe this John to have been the father of our John Price, who at that time was living on the Brodheads Creek in Smithfield Township. Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Matthias Price, who will be remembered by many as "Uncle Matt" and spent many summers at The Inn, Buck Hill Falls, was a direct descendant from these Prices. About the time he was celebrating his 90th birthday I had a long talk with him about the family we both belong to. During our conversation he smilingly told me he understood that our local Prices were part Indian which fact might account for some of their peculiar characteristics. I explained to him, as I have elsewhere in this account, about the Indian girl who indeed did marry one of the Price family for which they have reason to be justly proud. It is to be regretted that he passed away before we could establish our own distant kinship, for I believe our family descended from Benjamen too. From the Bible Record kept by V. F. Randolph, brother-in-law of Matthias Price, comes the following information. Benjamen Price was born about 1621 and his son Benjamen around 1640. They were two of the original 80 settlers of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. For the succeeding four or five generations there were very large families whose members spread out through the state. Marion Price, a summer resident at Buck Hill Falls, traces her ancestry back to Elnathan Price of Ringoes, Hunderton County, New Jersey. Elnathan Price married a Catherine Landis and in a record of the Landis Family, "A True Copy of the Original Copy by Henry Landis", he speaks of his grandchildren, the sons of Joseph and Catherine Price. Whether these Prices all came into Hunderton County, New Jersey, by the way of Elizabethtown, I do not know. We do know that they all settled within the same county at about the same time and the county was not too densely populated in the early part of the 18th century.

OTHER PRICES According to George F. P. Wagner, who wrote a Genealogy of the Descendants of Rev. John Jacob Price, there were Prices who migrated to Prussia from North Wales. Rev. John Jacob Preisz was born in Witzenstein, Prussia, near the close of the 17th century. He came to this country with his only son John about 1719. This only son was a "weakly youth"; fearing he would die without leaving issue he was married at a very early age to an Indian girl who bore him two sons, Daniel and John - the latter being born after the death of his father. Daniel was born in 1723 and in 1746 was married by Rev. Henry Melchoir Muehlenberg to Hannah Weicker. He signed his name "Daniel Prise", resided in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and died in 1804. John, born 1724, was the second son of the delicate John and Indian wife. He became a minister – owned land in Germantown which had belonged to his grandfather but sold out and moved to Cumberland County, now Franklin County, in 1752. Apparently he was twice married for his second wife Mary Ann signed a deed with him dated Jan. 19th, 1801. He signed deeds 1792 - 1797 ; no wife signed with him. He had eight children. This branch of the Price family is very large and accounts for about eight thousand descendants back in 1926. I am passing this information along thinking it may be of interest to some of the members of our branch of the family, even though there is no connection to be found in my study of the Price family. According to findings of Eli Price, the Price family moved from Wales to London, England, Germany, Ireland and America. In 1697 Philip and Rachel Price, his wife, bought 1000 acres of land from William Penn for 135 pounds. This was in Plymouth Township, Philadelphia County - now known as Montgomery County. They were members of the Society of Friends, as were all of the original Prices. They were the parents of one son, Isaac, who married Margaret Lewis. Isaac and Margaret were the parents of Philip Price who was born 5-11-1730. He married Hannah Bonsall 13-5-1752. After the death of Philip's father, Philip wrote "I was left alone, there being none by the name of Price descended from my great grandfather besides myself and children". My study of the family reveals no relation between this branch and our branch in this Country, but they are mostly responsible for the Quaker descendants in and around Philadelphia.

HISTORY OF PRICE TOWNSHIP So far as is known, Nicholas DePui was the first permanent settler in Smithfield Township. The Township was named for a man by the name of Smith, of whom little is known other than his claim was recognized in the deed William Allen made over to Nicholas DePui. The Township covered much more territory than at present and was situated at the northern most part of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In 1752 the Township was made part of Northampton County until 1798 when it was taken into Wayne County for 16 years. In 1814 it was made a part of Pike County until Monroe County was organized in 1836. It still is a part of Monroe County, but in 1794 Smithfield Township was divided in two parts, the other one being called Middle Smithfield. Nicholas DePui settled on the Pennsylvania side of the Minisink in 1725 and was soon followed by other settlers who came into the Delaware Valley over the Old Mine Road. During the latter part of the 17th century the Dutch opened some copper mines on the New Jersey shore, directly across the river from Shawnee and hauled the ore over to the Hudson with oxen. The road they opened is still called the Old Mine Road. Shortly after 1780 there seemed to be many settlers coming into this fertile country from Montgomery, Bucks and Northampton Counties. These people settled in Cherry Valley and the lowlands near the Brodheads Creek. To be found among the old Smithfield Church records, kept by Rev. Casper Fryenmnth4 dated 1741, is the name of one Anna Prys (Price) acting as sponsor for Luke Brodhead at his baptism. Also among these records we find an account of her marriage to Daniel Shoemaker. The "Shoemakers" - Benjamen and Daniel - came from Holland, and Anna Price came from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She probably was a descendant of Rev. Jacob Price. We find that William Coolbaugh, a native of Germany and former sea captain, came into Smithfield Township from Kingswood Township, Hunderton County, New Jersey. All during this time the Indians were still very much in evidence and if left alone would probably have given little trouble. However, they were easily persuaded to take sides and with the Walking Purchase still fresh in their minds they did make their presence known - if sometimes in a disagreeable manner. It is believed that when Edward Scull made his survey of "Purgatory Manor" in 1750 for John and Richard Penn our John Price came into this part of the country. "Purgatory Manor" was a tract of land consisting of 275 acres, "situated on the Brodheads Creek, about seven miles above one

Salladays (known as the Stites property) in the County of Bucks”. A description of this tract of land which was given to use of "the Honourable the Propietaries” in 1752, is to be found in the State Capitol at Harrisburg in the Philadelphia Patent Book D80, page 235. It has been told that John Price attempted to locate permanently in the year 1756 but was driven off by hostile Indians. The family were supposed to have hidden many of their belongings in caves and under rocks. We do know that he returned in 1761 to stay. Several times the family were forced to go to Fort Hamilton, in what is now Stroudsburg, for protection, but they returned shortly and took up where they had left off with whatever the marauding Indians left for them. Before long other settlers followed him. Among the list of 154 taxable people in Smithfield Township in the year 1786, made by John Schoonover, Assessor, John Price was taxed for 8 acres. To be found in Northampton County Court House are Lower Smithfield tax records which show that John paid 4 shillings 3 pence taxes in 1787. In 1788 he paid 6 shillings 5 pence and in 1789 his tax was 7 shillings 2 pence. In 1799 and 1801 John Price paid taxes in Wayne County. In 1801 J. Stroud paid $1.20 for John Price. I can find no recorded deed for the land on which John paid taxes, and am inclined to believe that there none. Someone has said there was a parchment deed from the Penns to John Price, Sr. I have tracked down every clue but it is not to be found. No will of John Price. Sr., is to be found. In the year 1786 Garrett Brodhead taxed for 400 acres. In 1799 Garrett Brodhead and wife deeded part of this land to Joseph and Ichabod Price (sons of John). This parcel of land is listed in the Philadelphia Patent Book No. 3, page 535, and was sold to Garrett Brodhead in 1785. The land bought by Joseph and Ichabod consisted of 32 and three-fourths acres and cost 128 pounds. This 32 acres is called the "Isle of Patmos" in the Patent Book. The Isle of Patmos is in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Asia Minor, and is mentioned in the Bible as the Island to which Saint John was banished and where he had the visions described in the Book of Revelations. This property could easily be the Perry Price Farm, now lived upon by his grandson, John Price, for there is evidence that at one time his fields were surrounded by the Brodheads Creek. The exact descriptions of the "Isle of Patmos" are easily available and this could be proven, if it were to gain any point. A deed that might be of interest to the family will be found in Wayne County. It is a record of the sale of a portion of "Purgatory Manor" to Samuel Price, son of John, from John and Richard Penn. This property consisted of 142 acres 128 perches, cost $357.00 and

included the property known as the Price-Reese estate. The transfer was made in 1804. Another deed to be found in Wayne County in Deed Book No. 2, page 69, is a transfer of 140 acres 150 perches from John and Richard Penn to James Price in the year 1805. For this land James paid 132 pounds 2 shillings 8 pence. This property joined the land bought by James' brother, Samuel, and was part of "Purgatory Manor". Samuel sold the lower portion of his property to his brother Eleazer, the upper portion to Peter Row in 1862. The upper portion was where the original home was located. Peter Row sold the property back to Perry Price in the same year. This land has passed through many hands - some of its owners were Stephen Peters, Abram Albert, Harry Peters, Samuel Kellum and Freeman Hughes. In 1901 it was bought by a family by the name of Degn and has been known as the Degn Place for many years. The old homestead stood until the early twenties when it was dismantled. There were two rooms on each of the two floors with huge fire-places in each room and a large lilac bush at the end of the house. The Brodheads Creek made a loop around the building and there was a large and very old apple orchard back of the house. In one of the deeds the place was called a "Tavern". This property now belongs to the Parkside Rod and Gun Club. In 1880 Price Township was erected from Smithfield and was so named in honor of its first settler, John Price. Originally Price Township took in part of what is now Paradise and Barrett Townships. The early settlers made their living by farming, lumbering, rafting logs, hunting and trapping. Wild game was very abundant. I have heard that the pioneer women who were left to do the chores while the men were absent always hurried to be finished before dark as sometimes wolves came down to the farms looking for food. It is told that after several skirmishes with the Indians, John and his sons became friendly with them. Being woodsmen they must have understood the feeling of having their hunting grounds trespassed upon. Later on Eleazer and Joseph built saw mills on the banks of the Brodheads Creek, but now nothing remains of the ruins. A large tannery was built further up on the creek which offered employment to many. The first schoolhouse was built in 1810 near the Price homestead and the first teacher was a man by the name of John Fenton. Church was held in the schoolhouse by Rev. Francis Eagen who first preached there in 1856. In 1867, while Rev. ND. McComas was pastor, the present church building was erected and named McComas Chapel in his honor. The adjoining church yard is the last resting place of the older generation of Prices.

REVOLUTIONARY RECORD OF JOHN PRICE To be found in the McComas Chapel Cemetery today is a stone erected to the memory of Benjamen Price stating that he was a Veteran of the Revolutionary War. It was placed there in 1940 by parties who were misinformed. I have called attention to the mistake and although that was two years ago the error has not been corrected to date. I am confident it will be taken care of in due time.

John Price, Sr., was a Veteran of the Revolutionary War. John Price, Sr., Wife: Sarah Wilkinson.

I. Member Northampton County Militia, 6th Bat- talion, 2nd Company.

General musteroll of May 18th, 1778, Private Pennsylvania Archives Series 5, Volume 8, page 436.

II Northampton County Militia, 5th Battalion, 8th Company under Capt. Benjamen Schoonover, Private.

Pennsylvania Archives Series 5, Volume 8, page 418. To be found in the Graves Registration Service in the Monroe County Court House is the record of the death of Benjamen Price in 1802. I think they must have been confusing the names of father and son. It was John, Sr., who died on that date for here is Ben-jamen's record. Taken from the original dockets of John Ransbury, J.P., in the Monroe County Historical Society Library, Stroudsburg, Pa. Marriage record of Benjamen Price and Jane Smith. Married August 10th, 1805. In the Monroe County Court House are to be found Letters of Administration filed for Benjamen Price September 2nd, 1848. The Administrators were Daniel Price and Wilkinson Price. The release of the wife, Jane Price, was signed September 2nd, 1848. Witnesses to the release were Elihu Postens and John Price, Jr. Daniel Price, one of the administrators of the estate, died before the settlement. Obituary in the "Jeffersonian", Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Benjamen Price died August 23rd, 1848. Age 67 years. Benjamen was born 1781.

Taken From The Diary of Catherine Dick Price

April 13th, 1931 - 84 years of age

To my son Clarence ----written by his mother today Jacob Mick and wife and four children left New York on the last day of October 1854. One daughter, Emma, was born in July 1855 in the next year. We moved to Hackettstown and stayed there all night. My mother's brother, Joseph Sommers, came down there with a two horse lumber wagon to meet us and a Mr. Jim Price came with another wagon for the family to ride in. (It had a white top on like they had to take people out west in.) From there we got all of our furniture and trunks and drove the first day, I think, up to Price Township to a Mr. Benjamen Price's home and we stayed all night there. Benjamen Price was the son of John Price the first settler in Price Township. I remember we -- or the children - went out to the barn with the old lady to watch her feed the turkeys and chickens. Then we went up to Squire Jacob Price's which is now Canadensis. My father and mother stayed there and rented some rooms there for about six weeks while Mr. Peter Seese, the old carpenter there, living on Seese Hill at that time, and Squire Jacob Price sawed the lumber to build our house and some others helped to build it. Then on the first day of February he (my father) died. He had lived here about four months. He died and was burried at Priceburg Cemetery --- now called McComas Chapel. A Mr. Staples from Stroudsburg preached the funeral service. Mr. Peter Seese made the coffin and they had to take it to the cemetery in a large sled for there was lots of snow at that time. Ichabod Price had a saw mill then about a mile from the place my father bought from Mr. Jim Price, in Price Township, now owned by Morris Price --- son of Perry Price and now living on his father's farm. I think my mother lived the rest of the winter with her father, Christopher Sommers, on Dutch Hill. In a year or so I went back to a Mr. and Mrs. Easton in New York and they sent me to school and boarded and clothed me for two years to help my mother along. I had an Uncle Henry Sommers living in Brooklyn. He married and had two boys. His wife was Caroline Winters, living in New York. My Grandmother and Grandfather, Christopher Sommers always lived on Dutch Hill. The Benders, Gravels and Alberts -- these families lived there for years. My mother stayed on the place and had a hard time to get along. In a few years the D. L. and W. Railroad was built and the first time I came back from New York - I think it was in 1856 - we got off at a station called Oakford. There was only a small little house there at that time. ( No station house.) Later it was called Oakland and later Cresco, which is its name now.

From Squire Jacob Price's there was only a small house and field till you got to a little old schoolhouse right by the creek (which is now Canadensis). It was all woods until you got up as far as Wilkinson Price's. In 1856, I think, Palen and Northup bought and built the tannery and stores and helped build the first Methodist Church in Canadensis. There was a meeting house they called it -- where the first Methodist Minister preached in the Northwest corner of the cemetery. It was the Coveville Cemetery, now called the Moravian Cemetery. Old Mr. John Deibler owned the land there and divided it and sold the land there to some of his children and what is now the Glenmere Hotel. (Laban) Leaben Lewis moved up from New York with his first wife's children --- Rebecca, Anna, Ben, Alfred, Llewellyn and Fred. With his first wife they spent the summers in the old Metzgar home by the Buck Hill flower gardens. He married again, a Miss Maggie Ferguson and they had two daughters, Grace and Belle Lewis. Belle married Dick Brewer and they had two children, Elvira and Margurite. They still live there. Milton Carlton married Vira and they have one daughter, Barbara. Up from the Moravian Church there are a lot of houses now. Above the Moravian Cemetery William Sommers lived and died. His one son died too but he has a daughter living yet. There was a Mr. Pitt and a Mr. Henry Pye lived up there. Mr. Pye was an English man. He taught in the Moravian Sunday School and had concerts and entertainments and was a singing school teacher and did a lot of good in the community. His first wife died and he got another. He had the stores and Post Office and had a hard time of it too. Next, the place where Darrell Megargle lives now, the Edwards family lived. He lost his wife. He had a grist mill there where he ground flour and feed. He later bought the land where now stands the boarding house of Mr. and Mrs. Milo Megargle. From Megargle's on up, the first place is where the Coveville Post Office was, years ago as long as I can remember it. Mr. Simon Stright kept it as long as he lived. His wife's name was Sarah and they had one daughter, Mary, and five sons. Later on it was Cana-densis Post Office and is now the Pinehurst Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence T . Price, proprietors. Clarence Price is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Townsend Price. Next is the place of Charles Price and his wife Phila. They were the father and mother of Madison, Morris, Ellen, Davis, Benjamin, Dimmick, Townsend and Mahlon. (All gone now.) William Long and wife Mary Ann had one son and five daughters - Emmaline, Margaret Jane, Ammida, Marietta and Ellen. Charles Price's brother, Smith Price had two boys; Edmund and Hiram and six girls. Next lived Washington and Lurette Ink. (I lived with her one winter and she taught me to milk a cow.)

Next came Jacob Gravel and wife from Tunkhannock --- they had no children. The place now belongs to William Price. Then the Townsend Price family. Five sons and one daughter. Arthur, Clarence, Myron, Joseph, Mary and Raymond. My mother married David Bender when I was in New York with Mrs. Easton. They had three girls and one boy, Walter. He is dead. Francis is dead too. *Rose Shafer and her daughter Ida are living. **Ida Mikels and her husband Charles are living at Mountainhome.
