OF 29 OCTOBER, 2016. VENUE: WROCŁAW CONTEMPORARY MUSEUM

At the invitation of the Director of the Museum, the following persons participated in the meeting:

Justyna Tamioła – MWW Chief Accountant, Łukasz Zieliński – legal counsellor providing ongoing legal

services to MWW, and Beata Koźmińska – interpreter into English.

The meeting was also attended by Bartłomiej Lis – the Secretary of the Museum Board.

a) Report on the programmatic activity of Wrocław Contemporary Museum in 2015 –

Dorota Monkiewicz, acting Director of Wrocław Contemporary Museum (details – see

the attachment).

b) Deputy Director of Wrocław Contemporary Museum Justyna Tamioła’s report on the

implementation of budget for 2015 (details – see the attachment).

Most of MWW’s budget is spent on salaries. In 2015, revenues from the sales of tickets,

catalogues and gadgets in the museum shop increased.

The purchase of a new vehicle (transport of exhibits) will be made in this year (2016); the

Thanks to economical use of retained income, it was possible to renovate the Museum

without applying for the Organiser’s financial assistance.

Hanna Wróblewska asks if there are any questions/comments regarding the

programmatic/financial reports for 2015 and reminds the attendees that the Board is

statutorily obliged to accept or reject the reports.

The Board unanimously gives a positive opinion on the functioning of Wrocław

Contemporary Museum in 2015 and accepts the annual report on the functioning of

Wrocław Contemporary Museum, including the financial plan. Resolution no. 3/2016

(see the attachment) and Resolution no. 4/2016 (see the attachment).

3. Chairperson Hanna Wróblewska asks Dorota Monkiewicz to present a summary of MWW’s

functioning throughout the current term of office of the Museum Board.

Dorota Monkiewicz reads the report, the attached media report and the report on the

functioning of the conservation department (see the attachments).

4. Chairperson Hanna Wróblewska requests the presentation of the plan of MWW’s functioning

for 2017. Dorota Monkiewicz, acting Director of Wrocław Contemporary Museum, talks

about the plan to continue MWW’s public and educational programmes and presents the

plan of exhibitions (attachment).

5. The Board passes a positive opinion on MWW’s programmatic plan for 2017. Everybody

present is in favour of the resolution (Resolution no. 5/2016, see the attachment).

6. Chairperson of the Museum Board Hanna Wróblewska opens the discussion on the current

situation of MWW.

The Members discuss the fact that Wrocław Municipal Office failed to respond to the official

letter sent by the Museum Board.

The purchase of new items for MWW collection in 2016 is also discussed. Explanations are

provided by Dorota Monkiewicz.

Among other items discussed by the Board Members are the following: the impossibility of

showing the exhibition “The Wild West. A History of Wrocław’s Avant-garde” in Wrocław; no

support of the Municipal Office for the Museum’s activities, including the promotion of

Wrocław’s art abroad (in the context of the “Wild West” exhibition); applying for the status

of a public benefit organisation; holding an open debate on the future of Wrocław

Contemporary Museum under the patronage of the International Association of Art Critics

(AICA). This debate could be held at Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts and Design, for example.

This idea is supported by all the members of the Museum Board of Wrocław Contemporary

Museum. A working group will be established (Hanna Wróblewska, Izabela Mironowicz, Jacek

Szewczyk) to further work on the idea.

A suggestion is made to make a public announcement, which is unanimously accepted by the

Board (the text below).

Announcement of the Museum Board of Wrocław Contemporary Museum

During the meeting of 29 October, 2016, the Board gave a positive opinion on the implementation of

MWW’s plan for 2015 and approved the Museum’s plan for 2017.

It was received with great anxiety that the Organiser has not yet disclosed the intentions concerning

the future of Wrocław Contemporary Museum – an institution that throughout several years of its

intensive functioning has managed to become an integral part of the cultural landscape of Wrocław

and Poland by carrying out equally successful local and international projects. Thanks to the huge

effort, professionalism and involvement of Director Dorota Monkiewicz and the entire team, an

institution with distinctive and original character has been built, which consistently amasses one of

four international collections of contemporary art in Poland.

Since neither the procedure and schedule nor the criteria for choosing the director and competition

jury are known, the Board concurred with the opinion of the AICA members and representatives of

the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Wrocław to hold in the nearest future a debate titled

Wrocław Contemporary Museum – Five Years. What Is Next? and invite representatives of artistic

milieus and of the organiser to participate in it alongside activists and inhabitants of Wrocław.

7. Closing the meeting of the Museum Board of Wrocław Contemporary Museum by

Chairperson Hanna Wróblewska.

Towards the 1980s. Wrocław’s Music Scene

Curators: Paweł Piotrowicz, Piotr Lisowski, Dorota Monkiewicz

Publication: a guidebook to the exhibition

The exhibition will be an expanded version of the music part included in the exhibition “The

Wild West. A History of Wrocław’s Avant-garde.” Photographic and film materials edited for

the exhibition will be shown to the audience in Wrocław for the first time. The exhibition will

be supplemented with selected artworks from the 1980s from MWW’s collection. Apart from

the guidebook to the exhibition, the show will be accompanied by a publication by Paweł

Piotrowicz titled “Wrocław’s Independent Music Scene 1979-1989,” which was published in

2015 by Rita Baum publishing house.

2 June – 2 October, 2017

Wrocław-Gdańsk. The 1990s (working title)

Curators: Piotr Stasiowski, Patrycja Ryłko

Publication: a scientific monograph

The idea for the exhibition is a response to the question asked by Dorota Jarecka in her

review of the exhibition “The Wild West. A History of Wrocław’s Avant-garde” – was there no

critical art in Wrocław? While the history of Gdańsk’s artistic milieu has been thoroughly

researched and described, there are virtually no studies about Wrocław in the 1990s. I hope

that by comparing these two centres, functioning alongside Warsaw, we will enrich our

knowledge about Poland’s art scene after the political transformations of 1989.

Funds from MWW’s budget are insufficient to carry out this project. The Museum will apply

to the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for a subsidy to organise the exhibition and

issue the publication.

The exhibition, which has been included in the programme of the national Year of the Avant-

garde in 2017 under the patronage of President Andrzej Duda, is the result of Sylwia

Serafinowicz’s PhD thesis that she defended at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. The

exhibition focuses on documentary photographs by Polish artists who captured ephemeral

artworks made in the 1960s and 1970s. By referring to examples such as Eustachy

Kossakowski’s well-known photograph of Tadeusz Kantor’s sea happening, the show will

raise the issue of the role of photography as a mediator in our knowledge about past events,

and pose the following question: Isn’t Kossakowski’s documentary photograph an artwork in

its own right? The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of Sylwia Serafinowicz’s

PhD thesis, translated into Polish and edited as a book.

Ewa Axelrad (b. 1984) has graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań and the Royal

College of Art in London. She makes installations, spatial objects and photographs. Her works

are usually site-specific. She often revisits her favourite subjects, which include the

connections between the sphere of visibility and the new technologies, distortions of

perception, associations revealing similarities between artistic practices and those of the

military or police. The artist is preparing a new project to be shown at MWW.
