SEVEN 2-year-old wins in 2012and just getting started!

There in the stall just outside the Aqueduct office of Rick Dutrow, Belmont Park’s leading trainer for the spring meet, stands a filly with a blaze and stripe that looks like a kid’s painting of Ohio that was hung up to dry too soon and a little pink diamond on her nose. There are a couple ways of seeing what a trainer thinks of one of his horses – he either talks a lot about them, or he is quiet and you see where they are placed in the barn and draw your own conclusions.

In Dutrow’s barn, the stall of honor is a spot there just across the dirt walking ring that circles the inside of the barn. That stall is reserved for the good one, the one everyone loves. Baby J has been in the barn less than a month, but already has this stall that is so

close to the office that anyone passing by can reach out and touch her. There have been some horses there in the past that would reach out and take a little testing nip back, but this filly is as sweet as she is highly regarded.

She is a daughter of freshman sire J Be K, the sprinter who came to New York in 2008 and put a stop to gray gelding Go Go Shoot having his way in all the winter stakes at Aqueduct by winning the Bay Shore, charging from the gates and never looking back. In Baby J’s Belmont maiden win June 28, she showed her own front-running style in a gate to wire win over a fast clos-ing Seasoned Warrior. Then, Baby J was trained by Michelle Nihei and owned by Juvenal Diaz, the same owner who delivered Blind Luck to racing’s highest echelon.

Now, Baby J is owned by Paul Pom-pa, and races in his silks for the first time in the Schuylerville – the Opening Day feature at Saratoga Race Course today.

“She ran an impressive race and the people who owned her called me to see if I would be interested,” Pompa said. “They presented me with an offer, and I flew in my vet, vetted her and now she is in my barn.”

While it sounds like business, some-how there is nothing about Thorough-breds that is just business, particularly with an owner like Pompa. He describes the things that make her stand out, that go beyond what a veterinary exam can

show, things that make her a fit in this race, her strength, her precocity and her speed.

“She’s got a good mind,” he says, and you know that it is true because he believes it.

In the $150,000 Schuylerville, she faces six other juvenile fillies going 6 furlongs and looking for Grade 3 recog-nition. Joel Rosario rides the 5-2 morn-ing line favorite from post two.

The fillies are still young enough that it is the reputations of their barns and of their sires that guide most people at the betting windows, and Brown Eyes Blue should be getting a lot of attention for both. A daughter of another first crop sire, a sire very close to the heart of Baby J’s owner and trainer, this Big Brown filly runs for trainer Dale Ro-mans and Twin Creeks Racing Stable. She is the only one in the race to have run and won at the Schuylerville dis-tance, breaking her maiden on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs June 30. She’s 6-1 and gets Shaun Bridgmohan.

Another filly with off-track creden-tials is Kelly Breen-trained Mr Hall’s Opus, who hasn’t raced in more than two months after her maiden win at Bel-mont May 2 in a 5-furlong contest. Ra-jiv Maragh rides the 15-1 shot for own-ers George and Lori Hall. Wesley Ward trainee Sweet Shirley Mae spent nearly two months without a race following her May 9 win at Belmont on a sloppy track. She led by a length at each call before winning by 1 1/2 for Ice Wine Stable. The 7-2 second choice breaks from the inside for Ramon Dominguez.

Tony Dutrow, who closed out last year’s Saratoga meet with a win by

Grace Hall in the Spinaway, comes in early with So Many Ways who won at Parx Racing June 9, going 4 1⁄2 fur-longs and finishing 8 lengths clear. Ja-vier Castellano rides the Pennsylvania-bred from the outside post.

It may have taken Can’t Explain two tries to break her maiden, but the vic-tory looked good enough to make her a player here. After finishing second in her debut May 31, the New Jersey-bred daughter of Not For Love drew off late to win by 4 1/2 lengths for trainer Todd Pletcher and Bortolazzo Stable at Bel-mont June 20.

“We felt like we had her ready but felt like the race would move her for-ward, She got just a touch tired on us the last part, she did everything else very well, it was a good effort, she came

back with a better one,” Pletcher said. “I like the way she’s physically and mentally handled the two starts, she seems to be getting more professional as she goes along, racing seems to be doing her well.”

Jose Lezcano takes the return call aboard the 5-1 shot.

Ken McPeek brings Fully Living, who vanquished Can’t Explain in their career debuts. Since that start, Fully Living stayed in the barn and pointed for the Opening Day stakes while Can’t Explain went back to school for an-other try. Spendthrift Farm’s daughter of Unbridled’s Song gets jockey Rosie Napravnik and is 4-1.

Additional reporting by Sean Clancy.

Tod MarksJackson Bend leaves winner’s circle after winning last year’s James marvin.

Eclectic? The Opening Day card offers more eclectisism than if Caffe Lena held a reunion at Uncommon Grounds. The James Marvin, the traditional co-feature on Opening Day, has it all. The $100,000 7-furlong gem achieved graded stakes status this year, after hosting the likes of Jackson Bend, Hamazing Destiny, Here Comes Ben, Aikenite, Caixa Eletronica and D’ Funnybone last year. Two of the eight who squared off last year return for another jaunt down the rumblestrip of a graded sprint stakes at Saratoga.

Jackson Bend and Caixa Eletronica finished 8 1/4-lengths apart last year, with sixth-choice Jackson Bend handling third-choice Caixa Eletronica. Both horses return a year later with stellar re-cords in between.

Owned by Robert LaPenta and Fred Brei, Jackson Bend returned to trainer Nick Zito in time for the Saratoga season last summer. The son of Hear No Evil quickly touted his presence with a win in

the James Marvin, followed by another rout in the Forego to end the meet. Since leaving Saratoga, Jackson Bend won the Hal’s Hope and the Carter and inter-mixed on-the-board performances in the Kelso, Breeders’ Cup Sprint and Gulf-stream Park Handicap. His only off-the-board effort came in his last start, when he inexplicably pressed the pace in the Met Mile before fading to finish fifth be-hind Shackleford, Caleb’s Posse and To Honor And Serve.

With Corey Nakatani’s defection to California, Rosie Napravnik picks up the ride on the $1.6 million earner.

Closest to the 7/5 morning line odds of Jackson Bend comes Caixa Eletroni-ca. The 7-year-old son of Arromanches sports two Grade II stakes wins this year, stretching from three furlongs. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the 18-time winner took the Charles Town Classic going 9 furlongs in April, finished fourth in the

Met Mile, then shortened to 6 furlongs for a win in the True North June 9. That day, he was 14 lengths (looked like 114) behind the heat before rallying to run down Justin Phillip and Smiling Tiger.

Caixa Eletronica makes his 55th ca-reer start in the James Marvin. Pletcher runs an arsenal of talent, from juve-niles to turf horses. Then there’s Caixa Eletronica, a horse Repole Stable claimed for $62,500 in March, 2011.

“He’s a very, very cool horse, shows up and runs every time, any distance, any weight assignment, any post posi-tion, any pace scenario. He loves the game,” Pletcher said. “It’s a perfect ex-ample of what they can do, what he can do. Win at a mile and an eighth and turn back and beat some of the best sprinters in the country.”

Even Pletcher had lost his confidence in the True North.

“On paper, we envisioned a really fast pace scenario,” Pletcher said. “We want-ed to let him settle, but at the half-mile pole, it seemed like he was way too far back, but he put in a big run. He’s just finding his groove now.”

Javier Castellano gets the return call. It’s a deep drop after the big two.Dennis Narlinger’s Pacific Ocean con-

tributed to the torrid pace of the True North, battling on the lead before fading to finish sixth, nearly 7 lengths behind Caixa Eletronica. Rick Dutrow took over from Mike Mitchell for that start. Joel Rosario returns for the third con-secutive time.

Crossbow makes his 10th career start for Kiaran McLaughlin. Owned by Dar-ley, the 4-year-old son of Bernardini won two straight at Aqueduct in February be-

fore being freshened for a crack at the True North. He finished fifth to Caixa Eletronica that day. Ramon Dominguez rides.

Scotus switches from the turf to the dirt for trainer Ken McPeek and owner Peter Callahan. The four-time winner won the Matt Winn Stakes last year but is winless in four stakes tries since. Alan Garcia returns for the first time since guiding the son of Successful Appeal to a Keeneland allowance win in April.

Ramon Preciado entered Golddigger’s Boy for breeder William Hartwell. Jose Lezcano picks up the ride on the eight-time winner who fell short of Sloane Ranger in his two most recent starts, a third against allowance company at Monmouth and a tough second in the Donald LeVine.

Zero Rate Policy attempts to bounce back from a fall in the Decathlon at Monmouth back in May. Terri Pompay has engineered five wins from the son of Trippi for Klaravich Stable and William Lawrence. Eddie Castro has the booking.

more than half of Saratoga’s Grade One wins were Keeneland graduates last season:

And they’re off.Well, almost. There’s a lot to look forward to as historic Saratoga

Race Course gears up for its 144th season of racing. But before the horses come to the starting gate Fri-

day afternoon, let’s take a look at what’s going on this summer.

Opening weekend brings the annual “Hats Off to Saratoga” festival.

Thousands are expected to line the streets down-town to enjoy local delicacies, live music and – what else? – creative hats.

“Beautiful women, beautiful attire, beautiful horses in beautiful Saratoga Springs. It’s what summer is all about,” said Saratoga resident Jerry Morse.

The event culminates Sunday in the 21st annual hat contest, where track visitors with the best headgear vie for prizes and, of course, bragging rights.

While some sport their Sunday best, others at the

track will look to chow down.Returning are old favorites like Putnam Market

and fried-chicken masters Hattie’s, which sits in a new location at the track, but plans to bring fans more of what they‘ve come to expect.

“We have many returning customers who have made Hattie’s Track Shack a part of their track ex-perience,” co-owner Beth Alexander said. Alexander

also says the exposure the restaurant re-ceives at the track drives business to her downtown location.

A newcomer to the track this year is Shirley’s Restaurant.

The Canadian-owned stand will be serving up plenty of poutine – that’s french fries with gravy and cheese curds for those who have never visited our neighbors to the north.

If you’ve got room for dessert you can head to the new Restaurant Row outpost of area-favorite Bettie’s Cakes. If you’re lucky, you might even come across Bettie herself running the show.

As for the actual racing, opening day features two of the summer’s 54 stakes races, the Grade 3, $150,000 Schuyler-ville and the Grade 2, $100,000 James Marvin.

Other big ones include the Jim Dan-dy July 28, and the Whitney Handicap Aug. 4.

A mid-meet highlight will come Aug. 10 as the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame holds its induction cer-emonies and namesake stakes race.

Jockey John Velazquez, trainers Rog-er Attfield and Robert Wheeler, along with 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzap-per, are the 2012 inductees along with historical honorees Planet and jockey

Anthony Hamilton. Velazquez recently returned to the track following an inju-ry and will get back aboard a horse in a race soon while chasing another jockey championship.

As always, the main event of the meet is the Travers Stakes.

This year the Travers is scheduled for Aug. 25 and is preceded by more than a week’s worth of fanfare, including 1864 Travers Restaurant Week. To celebrate, a number of area restaurants will offer three-course meals priced at $18.64 in honor of the year the Midsummer Der-by was first run.

Broadway’s Circus Café is participat-ing in Restaurant Week for the second year and its owners can speak to the promotion’s popularity.

“We had an incredibly positive re-sponse last year, with diners specifical-ly mentioning that they came to enjoy the special,” said co-owner Christel MacLean.

And what would a season at the Spa be without the giveaways?

This year’s goodies are a baseball cap July 29, a picnic mat Aug. 12, a pilsner glass Aug. 19 and a fleece blanket on Sept. 2.

While some will come on those days for the mementos and to see the best the sport has to offer, it’s the overall experi-ence that will keep them coming back.

“It’s about being a part of history,” says Saratoga resident Ryan Swingru-ber.

- Trainer Allen Jerkens

“Mr. Dreyfus asked me to train for him and I said I didn’t have any luck training for one man, I met him in New York, had lunch, I didn’t think we hit it off that good, we talked about trotting owners, trotting horses, I don’t know why I said it, but I said, ‘You owners, think it’s easy …’ He said, ‘Wait a minute, how long you been training?’ I didn’t care. I was leading trainer in New York, it was the first time I ever remember being like that. We ate, and I said I’ll see ya. I didn’t think I’d ever hear from him again. Two days later, he comes with his farm manager to the barn, he had about 35 horses. They sent me six horses,

one of them was Beau Purple.”

When the time is right, make the move. And that’s just what Ronnie Ebanks, agent for the Sara-toga newcomer Joel Rosario, is doing. Sixth in the nation in earnings, Rosario has moved east in hopes of soon becoming the nation’s top rider. He has al-ready made a big name for himself in California and looks to take that hard-earned reputation to anoth-er level. By the looks of it, the combination will do just fine, riding nine of 10 races on Opening Day, in-cluding live shots in the Schuylerville and the James Marvin for trainer Rick Dutrow. Ebanks, the “Love Man,” took a minute for a quick chat on expecta-tions, obstacles, and the one and only Saratoga.

How long have you been Joel’s agent?April was two years, so a little over two years.

What made you two come to Saratoga this sum-mer?

We had been discussing it for about a year and a half, coming back east because of the influx of

funds and purses. We didn’t want to leave the com-fort and the great position we were in with business there. When Johnny Velazquez had a spill and was going to be out for five or six weeks, summer was coming up, my business had gotten the weakest that

it had ever been in California the prior six months. We lost a lot of our stakes horses because of inju-ries. I thought, “We are going to do it, make the

move,” especially with Saratoga giv-ing $950,000 away a day (in purses). That’s almost double what Del Mar is. So I said to Joel, it’s time. We got to go now. I don’t want to but we have to.

Who do you expect to ride for?Everyone. Starting out, it’s not go-

ing to be like what we left, so we have to make our way. Just like anything. It’s like we’re starting over, we are go-ing to have to prove ourselves again, but I brought him here because I think he is the best rider in the country. I believe he deserves to be here.

How do you think Joel will transi-tion from the West Coast style to the East Coast style? Do you think there is any difference?

Yes, we just had a conversation about that. He’ll have to adjust his style but he is a very adaptable rider. That’s what I love about him. He is not a rider that has to plan a race. He is a natural. I’ve seen him take speed horses, have them last and win. He could take horses that come from last, put them on the lead and they win. California has so much speed, that he tended to take horses back more and let them collapse in front and get them. So that’s not going to happen very much here and he knows that. The style here is more even play. They finish more here. So he will have to adapt to that. He’s such a good rider.

He’s such an adaptable rider. I don’t see that being a problem. The issue is going to be getting him on live horses and the best horses. He’s not going to ride the 20-1 shots and win at 30 per-cent, that’s for sure. It’s about getting the right business.

Saratoga also has a couple of other

new faces including Rosie Napravnik. How do you feel about the other new competition?

For me? I’m in a tough position. Rosie has been here for four or five months ahead of me. So they have a lot of inroads. (Ramon) Domin-guez and (Javier) Castellano are run-ning the show in the business right now, they’ve been here. I’m coming from the outside in. I’m starting from scratch. I’m going to be up against it, getting the opportunity. As we know, the horses win the races. It’s about 10 to 15 percent jockey and the rest is all horse. They have the first hand of the business right now. When I get the firsthand of the business he will be leading rider. Until then, they will be in front of me. They are very good rid-ers but I put Joel with anyone in the country in ability. We have so much more to prove and a tougher way to prove it. But I know in time, of him being here, the public and the horse-men are going to see what quality of rider he is and he’ll make his own op-portunities.

What’s your background with Saratoga? Have you been here before and if so, who with?

Oh yeah, I was here for about eight

years. I had Shane Sellers and was very successful with him here. I also had Jorge Chavez here for a year and a half. So I have all those connections. I’ve worked with these horsemen for 15 years. I couldn’t have made the move without that. That’s why I said to him, “let’s go.” I have no fear go-ing back to Saratoga because I know everyone. Doors for me are open ev-erywhere here. He has not ridden for many of these trainers here though. They’ve seen him, they’ve seen his stats but having not ever ridden for them, it’s going to take time to get into these barns. They don’t know the level and quality he’s riding. It’s going to take time proving that and it’s go-ing to be tough proving that because I’m not going to start out with the choice horses. But it’s like anything – the cream will rise to the top. I’m very confident in that. In any game and in any sport, perseverance and talent will rise.

What’s your favorite Saratoga memory?

Fav-or-ite Sar-a-to-ga mem-or-y? I have so many. I can’t remember her name. I’m just kidding, that was joke! I had to make you laugh. No, it has to be winning the Travers with Shane Sellers on Carl Nafzger’s horse – Un-shaded.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Saratoga?

My favorite place is Novè, it used to be called Sergio’s. The owners are very good friends of mine. It’s the best place in town.

There is nothing like a quick start at Saratoga. Every owner, trainer and jockey yearns for winners early, to ease the pressure, climb the standings and promise big things to come.

Two-time defending champion John Velazquez knows it’s imperative, momentum builds momentum, success breeds success . . . collarbones hurt. Velazquez will miss the first four cards before gradually return-ing to his usual Saratoga workload, one that has netted Velazquez 655 career wins at the Spa, second to Jerry Bailey on the all-time list.

The 40-year-old begins this year’s meet from the sidelines. The recent Hall of Fame inductee broke his right collarbone and lacerated his liver when falling at Churchill Downs this summer. He climbed back aboard his first horse Monday, breezed three Thursday and plans to ride his first race next week, perhaps on Steph-anie’s Kitten in the Lake George Wednesday.

“I’m feeling good, very good. It’s been pretty easy, I feel much better than I thought I would. It’s just go-ing to take a few more days to get where I want to be, just fitness,” Velazquez said, between breezes Thursday. “Everything hurts, of course, just from doing nothing to getting on horses, but I feel really good, from one to three in a couple of days, I feel pretty good.”

After the injury, Velazquez took a month off, didn’t go to the track, didn’t watch any races. Sore in his back, down his right arm and nursing the collarbone and kid-ney, he followed doctor’s orders.

“The first week, I couldn’t move. I couldn’t walk. I stayed away for four weeks, I didn’t watch any races, they told me to do nothing for four weeks, so I did nothing for four weeks, ‘Don’t carry anything, don’t do anything stressful.’ That’s what I did,” Velazquez said. “It’s taken me the same amount of time as when I was younger. I’m healing fast, maybe because I’m really fit, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink. The doctor said I was heal-ing really, really fast and said whenever I felt ready to start riding, go ahead. You just need to get fit again.”

The day before Opening Day, Velazquez looked fit and ready, comparing sunglasses with Mark Hennig, collarbones with old jump jockeys, checking with his agent Angel Cordero, joking about pitching a few in-nings (not nine) and comparing notes with his wife Le-ona about the haze of the first few weeks after the fall.

“It’s good to be back,” he said, several times, filling space. “I’m shooting for next week. I’m not going to be riding two or three a day. I’m just going to ride one, maybe two until I get fit enough, just work my way in little by little, like I’m doing in the morning, little by little until I get fit enough to ride races.”

Sometimes, you have to trade a good start for a good finish.

The Choice of Champions Since 1969

A recent look inside trainer Rick Violette’s barn reveals both potential prospects as well as proven, time-tested horses, all ready for the opening of the Saratoga meet.

On one hand there is Carried Interest, recent winner of a 2-year-old maiden at Belmont Park. Owned by Klaravich Stable and William Lawrence, the son of Henny Hughes battled a longshot for the lead, dispatched him, then held off challenges by the first and second choic-es. Carried Interest secured the 5-fur-long race by half a length over the Todd Pletcher trained Palace Malice.

Like all trainers with a number of ju-veniles, Violette was relieved to win one early.

“He won pretty impressively,” Vio-lette said, “and beat a couple of nice horses.”

As for the rest of his 2 year old crop, Violette explains, “hopefully they’re as good as we think they are.”

Violette has two horses running in the opening cards of the Saratoga meet. Lenderoflastresort and Spurious Preci-sion are entered in maiden races over

the next two days. “The 2-year-olds, they’re the ones

that could make a breakout,” Violette said. “You just don’t know which is go-ing to be this year’s star or next year’s.”

Or no year’s. As for the star of his crop, Violette

couldn’t speak more highly of the New York-bred turf filly, Gitchee Goomie.

“We’ve got a terrific filly Gitchee Goomie, she’s just spectacular,” Violette said.

In her distinguished career, Patsy Symons’ 5-year-old mare, sired by the champion 2-year-old City Zip, has now won or placed in 17 of 19 starts, which include five stakes wins. Her most re-cent win, and first graded win, came in the Grade III Dr. James D. Penny Me-morial, at Parx Racing on July 3.

With 3 furlongs left, Gitchee Goomie sat seventh in a field of eight. Riding the rail through the turn, she came out in third as the field headed down the stretch. With a powerful kick at the eighth pole she finished in the lead by a half length over Hessonite.

“She’s been remarkable, she runs over everything. She always shows up,” Violette said. “She’s scary consistent.”

And it’s hard to disagree when she finished out of the money in just two starts, most notably in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Stakes last October, when she finished fifth.

As for the upcoming Saratoga meet, look for Gitchee Goomie in the Yaddo or the Ballston Spa Handicap. Last year, she won the Yaddo, restricted to New York-breds, and would be a natural choice in the turf stakes. Trying Grade II competition in the Ballston Spa is more ambitious, but would add an important line of black-type to her pedigree page.

“If she wins a Grade II, it would be a nice win for a horse well deserving.

Hard to disagree. For Violette, he hopes his 2012 suc-

cess can continue at Saratoga. With 30 winners from 110 starters (yes, a 27 percent win clip), Violette has been pro-lific this year.

“It’s been a terrific year,” Violette said. “We’ve been really consistent at a high rate all year and we’re just hoping to keep it up.”

Carried Interest broke his maiden with a win and Gitchee Goomie has raced four times with two wins, and two seconds.

As for now, the Saratoga meet is upon us. Perhaps Violette’s explanation of the meet at Saratoga is best. “Any race up here is pretty special,” Violette said. “This is a salty meet. Every race you win here you really earn it.”

Tod Markstrainer Rick Violette escorts gitchee goomie to the winner’s circle after last year’s Yaddo.

The barn still stands there along the Thruway near Saugerties. Green, round-topped, a little slumped but there it is. It can’t talk, but it says hello like a tour guide when I drive past ever year.

“Joe, you’re headed to Saratoga again. Welcome back. How was your year? The kids are growing fast, aren’t they? Did you do all you wanted since you drove past last September? Can you believe all that we’ve seen? How did we get here?

I nod, keep driving and think about it all. The barn holds firm, even if I know its floor must creak louder with each year, each settling of its timbers, each rainy day, each snowstorm, each thunderclap, each passing car.

This marks The Special’s 12th year. Like that barn, I feel a little worn down but here I am. Time to tie on and make it work again. The first deadline always tests us – too many details to iron out as we transition from home life to this life: office, rental houses, com-puters, cables, staff, supplies, schedules, trips to the warehouse, people, people, people.

The editorial product always seems like an after-thought as we cobble together the first edition. We were going to do more previews, cover more news, ask more questions, have more fun. A critic once said “I never know what’s going to be in that paper from

one day to the next.” Twelve years in, neither do we sometimes.Like my friend the barn, this newspaper has weath-

ered big moments, little mistakes, big ones too, laugh riots, crying jags, blackouts, hurricanes, economic cy-cles, racetrack management changes and state politi-cal upheavals. This year will mark the third Summer Olympics in The Special’s history. Ready to cheer for Michael Phelps again? Our first Travers winner was Point Given. Think about that for a minute.

Those kids the barn asked me about are 19, 16 and 11. The oldest just finished his freshman year of col-lege and walks hots on the backside. The middle one just got his learner’s permit and is hiking in the moun-tains of Virginia. He’ll be here soon. They’ll both be taller than I am soon. The youngest is home, learning how to be a middle-schooler, sending me silly photos and putting the finishing touches on a great summer of Little League and swimming. Their mother holds it all together, still. I can’t wait to walk her to dinner here next weekend.

Beyond the barn down the highway, I always check off the signs of Saratoga. The log home sales place on 87. The war protestor’s minivan on Lake Avenue, the hassle of parking downtown (when does that new garage open?). The construction (how about that new Price Chopper?). Old, new. Dirty, clean. Serious, fun-ny. Saratoga somehow blends it all every year.

Two days ago, I walked into Saratoga Coffee Trad-ers on Broadway, looking for a sandwich and a drink after a long day on the road – packing, unpacking, loading, unloading. I was weary, a little lost and prob-ably looked it. Then I was propositioned.

“Are you feeling adventurous?” the girl behind the counter asked. I paused. She wasn’t hitting on me and she certainly didn’t know I was about to embark on a 35-newspaper adventure. Nor did she know I’d was about halfway through a 20-hour day. No, she just wanted to know if I was interested in trying her recipe for an Arnold Palmer.

“It’s my own creation,” she said. “Lavender Earl Grey tea, with lemonade. The lavender really brings out the lemon flavor and the Earl Grey is great.”

That wouldn’t happen at home. Probably wouldn’t happen anywhere but here. The drink was perfect.

A day later, I walked into Elizabeth’s Table, which used to be the Cupcake Lab and our old neighbor a few doors up on Broadway. They moved to the Algon-quin Building – next to the wool/yarn shop. We moved to the Roohan Building – above Putnam Market. But I felt like a local when I walked in, to an embrace, a bag of scones and a cup of tea on the house.

I should probably stop and visit that barn someday.

30 Friday, July 20, 2012the saratoga special the saratoga special 31Friday, July 20, 2012

My friend Richard Valentine asked the question, innocuously, innocently, matter-of-factly, “Do you still get that same feeling when you drive into Sara-toga?”

He had just left Saratoga, headed back to Virginia, a long road ahead and a long road back. His question was loaded, I didn’t dare ask if he meant he didn’t or he did. I didn’t want to know. I hesitated, stammered, uttered a few inaudible words and have been think-ing about it ever since. I still had a day or two before heading north, making that left off the Northway, the right on Union Avenue and having that question answered for myself, yet again, for the 24th consecu-tive summer at the Spa.

I’ll answer in questions. Just questions. That feeling? That electric, sky’s-the-limit, when-

all-the-world-is-young feeling? That feeling of purity in the marrow of your bones? That strange feeling of pressure and freedom? That feeling of crossing the divide when you see the Thaddeus Kosiuszko Bridge on the Northway? That feeling of crispness when you open a window in a third-floor office over Broad-way?

That feeling of wind in your hair, leaning over the stall screen wired to the van door, as Dad turned up Union Avenue in the six-horse Imperatore? That

feeling of walking onto the turf course, after losing five pounds in the hot box, knowing you’re about to go faster than you’ve ever gone? That feeling of an 18-year-old kid walking down the long shedrow of the Annex, looking for Janet Elliot to ask if you can ride Bureau Chief, a horse who means nothing to most, everything to you?

That feeling when asking for a 21-year-old girl’s phone number in the box seats and thinking may-be I’ll marry this girl one day (I did). That feeling of looking for the Travers Canoe in the dark? That feeling of 35 issues of The Saratoga Special on your plate? That feeling of purity? That feeling Thorough-bred racing is alive and well? That sweet feeling of a cold drink on a Sunday night? That feeling of vitality when you see a Saratoga rookie walk onto the back-stretch and stop in awe?

That feeling of winning your first race, six years after riding your first race, at Saratoga? That feeling of saying goodbye to a young flame-out phenom who was gone before he knew who he was? That feeling of spiral fracturing your ankle after the last fence, knowing your last ride at Saratoga will end, broken in the dirt?

That feeling of looking for the next Silver Max, Drosselmeyer, Dullahan on the Oklahoma turf? That feeling of standing in the IRS line, thinking you’re smarter than everybody else? That feeling of seeing your silks on your horse in the paddock at Saratoga? That feeling of potential? That feeling of history? That feeling of unquenchable thirst to make some-thing of the short time you’re here?

That feeling when you see a horse try so hard that he can’t find his bearings? That feeling of chiseled bronze under your fingers on the plaques of Kelso, Frankel and Whiteley in the Hall of Fame? That feeling of jolt when your dive breaks the surface of Saratoga Lake? That feeling of utter disbelief when a horse you love gets beat? That feeling of disdain when you see a young man disrespect it? That feeling of pain when you see an old man lose it? That great, unanswerable feeling of the passage of time?

That feeling of seeing Frank and Jason at the bar of the Parting Glass or Sperry’s or wherever they set up for the summer? That feeling when you see the Chief, riding/driving the beat? That feeling when Tom Durkin says, ‘They’re off at Saratoga’ for the first time?

That feeling of dread when opening The Special first thing in the morning and wondering how many mistakes you made the night before? That feeling of energy when the lights go down at the Fasig-Tipton sales grounds? That feeling when you hear the sound of hoofbeats, growing louder over a freshly harrowed Oklahoma track?

That feeling of first light, over the trees, sun com-ing through? That feeling of dread when a deadline slips past? That feeling of wonderment as Saratoga lives outside your window of entrapment? That feel-ing of pain when you hear your son’s voice on the phone and he asks where you are and when you’re coming home? That feeling of a hard day’s work, complete?

Yeah, I still get that feeling.
