2nd Grade heads to the

Savannah Children’s Theater

2nd grade students trav-eled to the Savannah Chil-dren’s Theater on Thurs-day, September 28th. At

the Children’s Theater the students participated in Aesop’s Fables. Students told the tales of The Ant and the Dove, The Boy

Who Cried Wolf, The Hare and the Tortoise, The Fox and the Grapes, and The

Lion and the Mouse.

More STEM in Action Ms. Slater’s 4th graders participated in a STEM project where

they had to get a gummy worm through a gummy peach ring

without touching it. They were only allowed to use 1 paperclip

per person in the group and the gummy worm could not touch

the table or the floor.

Mrs. Youman’s students used their STEM

skills to see who could build the tallest free

standing tower. They could only use 25

balloons and masking tape!

Mrs. Davis’ and Mrs. Gonzalez’ students complet-

ed a stem challenge where their students were

asked to build a tower with only 20 pieces of spa-

ghetti and marshmallows. The tower had to be a

free standing tower and they measured to see

whose was the tallest!

5th grade students in Ms. Mulligan’s, Mrs. Ger-

man’s, and Mrs. Heaton’s science classes com-

pleted the Watershed STEM Project. Students

planned, designed, and made watershed proto-

types.

Dear Okatie Families,

We are gearing up for our bi-annual Passport to Peace.

This is a program designed to teach students about the

culture, customs, and traditions from countries they may

never have visited or even heard of. Last time we had

speakers from Costa Rica, Germany, Romania, India, Pe-

ru, Senegal, Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, Spain, Greece,

Belize, Argentina, Nicaragua, and South Africa. It was

such a wonderful day, and a great opportunity for our stu-

dents. If you are interested in sharing about a country,

please use the link below to sign up.

Passport to Peace will be Wednesday, October 25, 8:15-

10:30 a.m.

A light breakfast and lunch will be provided for the present-

ers

On October 3, Okatie welcomed Gary Mau-

er, a local magician, to hold a magic show

for the families of our young owls. The fam-

ilies had lots of fun interacting with the

show and enjoyed a delicious dinner as

well. Kids Club is a special activity that we

do each year to promote parent and child

interaction during family friendly activities.

Special thanks to Mrs. Woods for putting

together this fun night!

Family Literacy and ESOL Night Family Literacy Night was held September

28, 2017. This year’s theme was Camp Read-a-Lot. Students and their families

participated in a variety of activities which included: Gone fishing (fishing for rhyming words and other vocabulary building activi-ties) , Building Words, Acrostic Poetry, Mad

Libs, Scavenger Hunt Story Writing and creating a Family Reading Pledge.

Be sure to check out the NEW Beaufort County calendar.

Make up days are November 18 and December 16.

*****Town Hall Meeting with Dr. Moss is October 10th at 6 p.m.. This is a very

important meeting as REZONING is going to be discussed. Please make sure

you come out and make your voice heard. If the rezoning plan is approved some

of our students will be rezoned North of the Broad. *****

The 4th grade and 5

th grade classes were visited

today by 3 professional musicians from the Hilton Head Orchestra as part of the Music Bridges Pro-gram. These musicians gave a 30 minute presen-

tation where the students were able to discuss their knowledge of how sound is produced in gen-eral and on various instruments, as well as meter,

fractions, imagery, instrument families, pitch, etc. The students will have another visit from more

musicians November 23rd

4th Grade spend the day at

Honey Horn Plantation

The fourth grade students were able to ex-plore the Coastal Discovery Museum at

Honey Horn Plantation. They learned about the Native Americans that once lived in the low country. Some of the information includ-

ed how they found/constructed shelter, food, water, and the use of pottery called

pinch pots. This was a great experience for the students because they have just fin-

ished their Native Americans unit and they were able to see first-hand what it was like

for the Natives to live in the low country.

A very special thank you to Bluffton Fire Department,

Ms. Mulligan, and Mrs. Lane.
