5Nothing screams summer than a garden party with family and friends. The smell of a barbeque blowing in the breeze, buckets brimming with ice cold drinks, and laughter late into the evening summertime is the perfect excuse to get together, get outdoors and enjoy life. Summer get-togethers are ideal for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, housewarmings and christenings, when you can open up your home and extend the space to include the garden. The one thing we can be certain of is the unpredictable British weather but dont let the threat of rain dampen your celebrations. Before you drag the trusty cobwebbed gazebo from the garage, consider hiring a small marquee that offers greater protection should sun turn to rain. Its not just heads that will be kept dry should the unthinkable happen: a marquee will protect food and drinks from flies, rain and sweltering temperatures.
If barbeques and late night parties arent your thing theres other, more genteel, ways to enjoy a summer marquee party. In recent years the growing popularity for all things vintage has seen a renaissance in afternoon tea parties as an alternative catering option for weddings, christenings, hen parties and corporate events. Afternoon tea parties add a touch of quintessential English elegance to any event. Whether its an informal garden party for friends or a special occasion, guests will be transported to a bygone era where high society ladies drink tea from pretty china cups and eat dainty cakes from three-tiered stands. What better way to while away an afternoon with friends.
Whatever type of celebration youre planning, a marquee will ensure your event isnt a washout. Before you gawp at the cost of hiring one, a small marquee from a reputable, local company is more cost effective than you think. Based in North Waltham, JAG Marquees offer weekend hire on garden-sized marquees with matt flooring, lights, heaters and free site survey. With prices from 185, JAG will deliver, erect and dismantle your marquee saving you time and hassle so you can concentrate on your guests.

Fluoride is a mineral. In some parts of the world it can be found naturally in water. It was discovered that people that lived in these fluoridated areas had less tooth decay. Further research has confirmed the benefits of fluoride on teeth.
Dental decay is caused when the bacteria in the plaque (the sticky white stuff) on your teeth feed on refined carbohydrates (e.g. in the sugar you eat) and then produce acid which then dissolves a hole in the tooth.
Fluoride can go into the enamel the outer part of the tooth, making it is harder for the acids produced by bacteria to cause the decay. Fluoride can also slow down the speed that bacteria make the acid. This is all good news for teeth!
This is why you should spit out but not rinse after brushing your teeth-leaving behind some of the frothy toothpaste that contains the fluoride so it can work on your teeth for longer.
Fluoride is a preventative measure. Ideally we should be reducing the frequency of sugar attacks to 3 hits a day and reducing the bacteria by brushing and flossing away
the plaque effectively.
There is an idea that to add fluoride to our water supply will prevent the incidence of decay particularly in high need areas and particularly in children. Worth considering when dental decay is the 3rd highest reason for General Anaesthetic admissions of children in the UK?
In my opinion I do feel fluoride is of benefit to most of us in the prevention of dental decay. However, there needs to be more dental health promotion, teaching of oral hygiene at schools and at the dentists, and tackling the giants who feed us sugar. Finally extra fluoride should be given on a need basis.
A simple way of presenting how I feel about fluoride is that I would happily give fluoride to both my lovely sons Daniel (age 7) and Joseph (age 5) do you need more of an argument!!

Stitched By You workshops are held at the Herriard British Legion Hall, just off the A339 and close to Basingstoke, Hook and Alton.
for more information visit www.stitchedbyyou.co.uk or contact Caroline by emailing [email protected] or calling 07769 582138.
Caroline, tell us how Stitched By You came about? The Stitched By You School started running at the beginning of the year, how-ever it has been a dream of mine for a long time. I have always been interested in sewing and the idea of the school started to evolve during my apprentice-ship with a tailor in savile Row. I felt there are a lot of people who would like to be creative, to sew, crochet, make jewellery and many other crafts but lack the confidence and so the idea of a sewing/craft school began to develop. At the start of 2014 I was able to make this dream a reality and Stitched By You sprang to life.
Although I run the business I am fortunate to have met some very talented and creative people along the way and they are working with me to bring their skills and knowledge to the classes. The brilliant tutors share my ethos for teaching in a relaxed atmosphere to help participants feel comfortable in their learning environment whilst having fun at the same time.
What workshops and classes do you offer?Stitched By You is a craft school and our timetable is con-stantly evolving. Currently we offer classes in the arts of sewing, quilting, crochet and jewellery making. All equipment is provided, as are homemade cakes and refreshments!
Can complete beginners join in and what skills will they learn?Classes are for all levels so that everyone can feel comfort-able while enjoying a challenge. You can come along as a complete novice and learn the basics or develop skills you already have. Our Know Your sewing Machine course is where people can come and learn the basics but then there are classes where pupils can learn to make their own shift dress, A-line skirt or even piped cushions.
Which courses are popular?Alongside these more traditional courses we also offer some more novel ses-sions for example our very popular Knicker Parties where groups of ladies or individuals participate in making a pretty pair of knickers whilst having a good chat and giggle with friends. This one is particularly good for a birthday or hen party. We also offer workshops for parents and grandparents to learn together with their younger family members a lovely way for skills to be shared across generations. In many of our classes the participants take away an item theyve finished. Some of my proudest moments so far have been seeing the faces of pupils taking home items they never dreamed they could make.

Are there plans to grow the business or add new courses? We would like to offer a lot more courses, for example pattern cutting, beginners knitting, knitting socks and intermediate jewellery making to name a few.I would also like to expand our remit to offer knit and natter groups, mixed craft evenings and drop-in sessions.
What do you enjoy about running Stitched By You?I love seeing people learning something new, be it a whole new skill or learning that particular part of their art that they havent been able to master before. I love helping to provide them with the confidence and inspiration to go on and tackle new pro-jects. Its great watching everybody nattering and sharing tips. As with all businesses, there are difficult moments and new challenges. This is a new business and with that
comes a sharp learning curve, but I love every minute of it!
What do you love about living and working in the area?I have lived in this area for 15 years and absolutely love it. The villages and towns in Hampshire are friendly and welcoming places and this is something I want people to say about Stitched By You.
It is particularly satisfying to work within my community and help more people to develop their skills and their passion for these traditional arts.
Most of al l we want our students to go home with a sense of satisfaction in what they have achieved. Nothing beats
that feeling.
Christabel McCullough discovers theres more to Wellington Country Park than a 1980s T.Rex.
It was a Wednesday afternoon, post school run, when we pulled up at Wellington Country Park. While I marvel at the size of the car park (a rarity these days), Rafferty and scarlett hotfoot it to the entrance ea-ger to explore. Quickly deterring them from manhandling every item in the impressive gift shop with a bribe, I mean promise, of ice cream, were handed a map from the smiley girl on reception and head straight for the Jumping Pillow. I defy any child not to enjoy this. so enamored were my gruesome twosome that I found myself forced, once again, to pull the ice cream card, just to prise them away.
The great thing about Wellington Country Park is that it doesnt take long to find something else to whet their appetite for adventure and fun. from clambering on climbing frames
and swooping down slides, to sand and water play, theres so many ways to keep little ones entertained. for imaginative play, we love the disused tractors and tiny wooden homes of the Enchanted forest. fairy doors and stairways in the trees set scarlett on the hunt for little folk, while Rafferty roars his way through the dinosaur trail, stopping for a moment to put his head inside a ferocious looking T.Rex. I first visited the Park in the 1980s, so a personal highlight was spying the original dino-saur from my childhood loitering among the trees. But theres no time for nostalgia: theres farm animals to feed, a miniature train to ride, gemstones to pan for, and the umpteenth go on the zip wire - the adventure playgrounds pice de rsistance. Anyone say coffee? Thankfully, theres a lovely caf with hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and lunchboxes for the kids should you require sustenance.
You could easily spend a whole day at the Park: there are lots of picnic tables and secluded areas to put down a blanket. Nice clean loos and fresh coffee (something any parent with young children will appreciate) top off a fantastic day out for all the family. Well certainly be back in the summer holidays!

Situated on the outskirts of Basingstoke, The Sun Inn feels a million miles away from the bustling town centre. from the outside it looks like a traditional country pub - inside we discovered an exciting menu created by the young, ambitious head chef and landlord, Gordon stott.
We visited on a friday lunchtime and were warmly welcomed by our waitress, suzanne, who showed us to the smart dining area. The menu is surprising: alongside classic pub fare like
local ale battered fish and chips, homemade burgers and a posh ploughmans, theres an impressive choice of starters, mains and desserts each with their own unique twist. for indecisive diners like myself, time should be taken to peruse the menu. Caught between tempting choices like roasted guinea fowl breast wrapped in Parma ham with giant couscous, and fish cakes with caper and lime dressing, sweet chilli gel and carrot and pepper remoulade, my procrastination is pushed to the limits. Thankfully Natalie, my famished lunch partner, is capable of making a decision and suggests sharing a deli board. The well-presented wooden board quickly arrives with ample portions of sliced Parma ham and smoked salmon, feta cheese stuffed red peppers, sun-blushed tomatoes, mixed olives and toasted garlic
ciabatta: all equally delicious and perfectly fresh - the right amount to satisfy us before the mains arrived. As a die-hard carnivore I throw caution to the wind, sidelining sirloin medallions for a dish I havent tried before. The panko-coated halloumi served with pea puree, crushed spring onions and new potatoes and a pickled cream was heavenly: unmistakable panko crunch with soft, gooey halloumi cheese oozing beneath. Top marks for seasoning. Natalies oven roasted lamb rump was cooked to perfection:. Tender, melt in the mouth rump was served with a creamy garlic and thyme risotto and vibrant al-dente broad beans. spying the potato dish of the moment - we couldnt resist a portion of triple-cooked chips. They didnt disappoint.: AMAZING.
feeling full and in the spirit of sharing, we treated ourselves to a delicious and bouncy vanilla souffl a perfect base for the dense chocolate sauce and fruity blueberries.
The sun Inn is a great place for a relaxed lunch or formal dinner with excellent food and customer service. Theres a secluded back garden with a large, neatly cut lawn and the added bonus of a play area: note taken for our next visit with the kids. Highly recommended.

Robert mays is hoping to be the first comprehensive school to win the international F1 in Schools competition - but they need your help.
six Year 11 pupils will compete against teams from over 42 countries at the schools World finals in Abu Dhabi later this year. To get the team to the final they desperately need to raise 22,000, and are looking for local businesses or individuals to help them reach their goal.
As part of the competition, they must create and brand a motorsport team and present to some of the worlds top engineers. The team, known as Colossus f1, must build a world standard 21cm long car that complies with the 50-page rules and regulations to be in with a chance of winning the coveted Bernie ecclestone Trophy.
Now in its tenth year, f1 in schools is the worlds largest sTEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) competition that aims to inspire and educate young people through the magnetic appeal of formula One.
Team manager, Vicky Waterfield says: We need all the support we can get, its such a great opportunity and we want to win the trophy for all British teams.
Robert Mays school has been one of the only schools in the world to have competed in three of the nine world finals, making them one of the most successful schools in the world.

SLB Beautykeep skin on fingers, toes and cuticles clean while painting your nails by adding a small amount of petroleum jelly around these areas with a cotton bud (making sure not to get any on the nail). The jelly will act as a moisturiser as well as a barrier to keep polish from staining your skin. Then help the polish dry quicker by dipping your fingers in cold water (the colder the better)...less risk of smudges.

Summer Holiday Vehicle Health Check At The Plough Garage
With the summer holidays soon approaching, The Plough Garage is encouraging motorists to get their cars professionally checked to ensure they are safe, reliable and comfortable as the weather improves. The Plough Garage, in Crondall, is offering a Holiday Check to give drivers peace of mind before the summer getaway.
Towing a caravan or having a boot full of luggage demands that a car is in the best pos-sible condition to prevent a delayed start or an abrupt end to summer motoring. The multi-point Holiday Check provides an expert assessment of a vehicles condition, examining essential areas including the condition and level of the coolant and engine oil, as well as the brakes, tyres, wiper blades, windscreen and lights.
The Plough Garage also recommends that motorists have their air conditioning systems checked. Harmful bacteria and mould may have built up in the ducts of ventilation systems that have been switched off during the recent damp conditions, posing a health risk to drivers and passengers by circulating unpleasant bugs into the car. The Plough Garage has the very latest air conditioning system diagnostic and servicing equipment for all makes and models of vehicles.
Wayne Foster, The Plough Garage Service Controller, commented: We all look forward to the warmer weather and getting away for a well-deserved break, but finding a problem with the car on the morning of your holiday can ruin the getaway.
Booking a Holiday Check with The Plough Garage will put motorists minds at ease and ensure their vehicles are fully prepared for the holiday season.
Apart from being your local servicing and MOT centre, The Plough Garage also keep a wide selection of quality Used Cars. So if you are thinking of updating your car for the summer, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Buryfields Infant School
This term we are learning about gardens. We have begun our topic by visiting Sir Harold Hiller Gardens in Romsey. We had an absolutely brilliant time learning about the plants, trees and wildlife that live in the arboretum. We completed many differ-ent activities throughout the day and had fabulous weather to make it even more fantastic!
We completed a colour-matching task, where we had to match the colours on the paint palette to different plants and flowers. We used large nets to sweep in the long grass and catch minibe-asts. We travelled through the bamboo tunnel and across the rickety, wobbly bridge. We made our own decorative caterpillars using tiny bits of plants and enjoyed smelling the different plants in the Mediterranean garden.
We have visited Hiller Gardens
We learnt about ever-green and deciduous trees. We felt the smooth Eucalyptus tree, popular with Koalas in Australia, Koalas spend all day eating the leaves. We also looked at plants with huge leaves.
These little fruit jellies are full of bursting bubbles that tingle on the tongue with every mouthful.
Ingredients:
4 LEAvEs Of GELATINE800G sOfT fRuIT. YOu CAN EITHER usE ONE vARIETY OR A mIx SuCH AS STRAWBeRRIeS, RASPBeRRIeS, BLACkBeRRIeS, BLueBeRRIeS, BLACk/ReDCuRRAnTS - CoLD450ML Of PROsECCO OR OTHER fIZZY WINE - CHILLED5G CAsTER suGAR
Method:
Have 8 small moulds ready such as Dariole moulds, or small coffee cups, egg cups, glasses etc. soak the gelatine leaves in cold water for 5 mins. While this is soaking place the fruit
into the moulds. Place the fruit filled moulds onto a tray and in the fridge to stay cold. When the gelatine is soft drain the excess water and add 100ml of hot water to the gelatine. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. When the gelatine has cooled to room temperature add the Prosecco or equivalent and then pour into the moulds. Place in the fridge to set. When the jellies are ready, dip the bottom of the moulds into hot water to release and then turn out onto a plate, or eat them straight from the mould.
Tips: keeping the fruit cold and Prosecco cold helps keep the fizz in the jellies.Instead of using gelatine you can use 135g of packet jelly such as raspberry using a 100ml of boiling
water to dissolve, letting it cool to room temperature before adding the Prosecco.
These little jellies are great for summer picnics and dont forget a spoon.

Summer scents and heavenly blooms........wayside flowers.....relax and enjoy!Try this walk to catch the summer flowers: the blue-grey of bor-age, and the dense foliage of the horse chestnut trees. Everywhere blooming, heavy fecundity. The oil seed rape vast yellow patchwork may have metamorphosed into a mass of green pods by now. How-ever following the path and wading through after a rain shower will still give you the exhilarating and refreshing rush of cold wet legs on a warm day (do wear your waterproof over trousers if you have them). What a delight!

Bernie says:The country is crisscrossed with the signs of Roman roads either now beneath modern roads or existing as a track, a byway or even a shallow mark in a ploughed field. Usually (but with variations) the road was a pebble or gravel surface on a bank known as an agger with a drainage ditch on either side known as a fossa. Roman roads are normally straight but avoid or go round natural obstructions such as steep sided valleys or substantial hills.
