NARISSA FRASER Friday 21 February 2020 THE Central Bank has revealed the design and look of the polymer notes for the $50, $20, $10, $5 and $1 bills. The bills will become publicly available from September 2020. All bills remain the same defining colour but the bank's award-winning $50 has gotten a make-over. It is now entirely orange and does not have hints of green or yellow. The old notes will remain legal tender until the end of 2021.In December 2019 during the changeover process from the old cotton-based $100 bills to polymer, the bank had indicated the other notes will eventually be changed.

The Royal Canadian Mint announced that it has produced the largest gold maple leaf coin ever made. The token was coined at the Mint’s Ottawa facility.

“As the only Mint in the world crafting coins from 99.999% pure gold, the 10-kilogram product offers collectors a unique luxury experience,” the institution said in a media statement. “In creating its second only such offering, the Mint has faith-fully recreated all the signature elements of its famed gold maple leaf bullion coin.” The Royal Canadian Mint is the Crown corporation responsible for the minting and distribution of Canada’s circulation coins According to the Mint, the token meticulously captures every detail of the 1-ounce gold bullion coin it celebrates.

It features a maple leaf-shaped security mark and an array of radial lines filling the reverse and obverse, as well as the trademark Walter Ott-designed sugar maple leaf in the centre, in a matte proof finish.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by portrait artist Susanna Blunt in 2003.

Fewer than 10 pieces of the gold maple leaf were created. Their price is based on a combination of the gold market rate at the time of purchase, plus a premium for manufacturing and a very low mintage

TORONTO -- Canadian mining firm Alamos Gold Inc. reports that a group of armed robbers intercepted gold dore bars on the runway at its Mulatos mine site in Mexico, then staged a dramatic escape in a separate light aircraft. In a statement in Spanish, Alamos's Mexican subsidiary Minas de Oro Nacional says five heavily armed people subdued security guards who were loading the bars for transport on a plane on Wednesday morning. At the same time, it says, a light plane, described as a "Cessna-206 type," landed, and within 10 minutes the aircraft, the armed group and the bars were airborne and headed towards the mountains. Alamos spokeswoman Rebecca Thompson says no one was hurt in the dramatic robbery, adding another mine, owned by Mineria Penmont, a subsidiary of Fresnillo, was robbed a few weeks ago. She says the Mulatos loss is covered by insurance. In a report, National Bank analyst Mike Parkin says 2,600 ounces of gold bars, an alloy of gold and silver, were taken, but Thompson could not confirm that figure. This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 9, 2020.
