    Sec School, established in 1966 as an English medium school, 842 students.Grown to 1,100 students with 66 teachers (2007)

    Socio-Economic Environment

    the surrounding: low cost public housing area in mid 1990s, identified as a problem areaby City Hall (high rate of petty crime, gangsterism & drugs

    Teacher-Student Literacy, Learning & Discipline Environment students are from low-income families mother tongue widely spoken oppose to BM & English disreputable for cases of indiscipline & juvenile delinquencies money is an issue for most students teachers fear of being posted to school due to poor reputation

    and personal negative perceptions

    Factors contributed to the social ills: cramped living conditions, poverty, unemployment, lack of

    recreational activities & facilities, & a general

    feeling of apathy Factors threatening the learning population:

    Drug distribution syndicates recruited schoolchildren & teenagers towarn them of police presence in the distribution area. 1024 peoplearrested, including the areas syndicate heads

    Students have no time to read. The students either do part time, left totake care of themselves, parents are too busy.

    Most families do not have any newspapers/ books at home. Language limitations: 70% of the student population came from
