Special Hours over the Jewish holidaysplus

Sukkot at the — the sukkah goes up soon!

Page 2: October_Newsletter_2014

From our Chief Executive OfficerIt has always struck me that Fall is simultaneously the season of endings and the season of new beginnings. The end of summer and the beginning of a new school year, the end of the flowers and the trees and the beginning of the cool, crisp weather...but nowhere is this connection more evident than in the Jewish calendar.

This month marks the end of the solemnity of the Jewish High Holidays and the beginning of what is often referred to as the Season of Our Rejoicing. Sukkot, the Jewish holiday that begins the evening of October 8th, has both historical and agricultural significance. Agriculturally, Sukkot is the Fall harvest festival. Historically, Sukkot commemorates the 40-year period during which the children of Israel wandered the desert and lived in temporary shelters. We observe the holiday by temporarily erecting booths in which we eat, sleep and pray for the week. I hope you will join us in our own Sukkah (booth), lovingly decorated by the children in our early childhood and after school programs. The Sukkah will be in the rear courtyard from Wednesday, October 8th through Friday, October 17th.

On a personal note, this month also marks a new beginning for me as the Chief Executive Officer of the Riverdale Y. I am honored to be leading this tremendous organization, with its rich heritage. I have already had the pleasure of joining the nursery school students for their sing-along session with “Groovy Greg” and joining the seniors for a shofar blowing lesson and dancing session. I look forward to serving the entire Riverdale community, over the coming months, with the exceptional educational, recreational and wellness programs that the Y has to offer for all.

In the meantime, I wish you and your family Chag Sukkot Sameach (a joyous holiday).

Deann FormanChief Executive Officer

Meet us at the Y!

Introducing Daniel Peña, our new Sports & Recreation Director!

Daniel is former collegiate Division 1 athlete and comes to the Y! after teaching physical education and coaching football, basketball, and track and field for the past several years. His background in personal training guarantees that each child in his program will get the one-on-one attention he or she deserves, and he brings the energy and passion that motivates and inspires young athletes.

Daniel has scheduled a wide variety of sports activities for the fall-winter season. Youth Basketball clinics are now with Felipe Lopez and Sunday Youth Socceris back! Girls-only basketball, after-school sports, and gymnastics are all on the menu. Adults also get in on the action with evening pickup games. Stop by the gym and say hello!
