Dear Sisters and Brothers:It ’s hard to believe that

another year is almost gone. Time is one thing we have no control over; it doesn’t matter how much money, infl uence, or status one has, time treats us all the same. What makes us different is how we use that time.

This past year has been an interesting one for the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. We have had our successes such as the fi rst year of the Mas-sachusetts Education and Law Awards, the 100th Anniversary Gala, utilizing social media, accepting credit card payments online, the launch of a new website, and the design of OSIA merchandise such as the brace-let that has been extremely popular. There are many items for sale that refl ect our Italian heritage and our Order. These can be viewed and purchased at www.osiama.org. They make great gifts for the holidays.

During this time of the year, the Charity Commission visits the North End Nursing Home for our annual holiday party. This year, for the fi rst time, we will also have a party for those staying at Casa Monte Cassino. The Casa is one of our state charities that houses interna-tional visitors who come to Bos-ton for medical treatment not available in their home coun-

tries and who cannot afford a place to live. We welcome any and all members to join us and bring some holiday cheer and memories to those who truly need it. I know that many of our lodges do the same in their com-munity and remember those members who can no longer attend meetings.

The Grand Lodge is partner-ing with the Special Olympics, starting in January with their bowling tournaments, and later in the year, soccer and bocce tournaments. We are asking for volunteers to help the days of the events, and for donors to contribute sponsorship money. Filial lodges can get involved as an organization in events in their area. It’s a way to contribute to the community and to foster recognition and interest in the Sons of Italy. Further details can be found at www.osiama.org.

Our Order has undergone many changes over the years. I believe our focus moving ahead should be on family events, intergenerational offerings, and preserving our culture, heritage, and customs. We need to build upon the values we grew up with: honesty, fi del-ity, commitment, hard work, and a connection to our Italian upbringing. Our immigrant ancestors, in a generation or two, accomplished great things

through hard work, education, and supporting each other. We have removed ourselves from that experience of struggle and integration to the point where current generations identify with the mass media depic-tion of Italian-Americans that generally portray negative ste-reotypes. It is our duty to work diligently to offer the true story of who we are as Americans of Italian heritage and the positive contributions made individually and as a community.

This hol iday season as you meet with your relatives and friends, make a point of recounting how your family made the voyage from Italy to America, the hardships and the successes, the good and the bad. Continue or recreate Italian customs and traditions for your family to connect with their inner Italian. Cultivate their desire to connect with their past and trace the family tree. And hopefully, you will tell them about the Sons of Italy, its charitable work, scholarships, culture, and programs, and ask them to become a member of the Figli d’Italia community.

I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season.

Buon Natale e un nuovo anno sano e felice.

Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo was also in attendance, bringing with him the greetings of the Massachusetts Legisla-ture and noting that he was glad to see members of the Grand Lodge in attendance at the kick-off event for Italian Heritage Month, which is cel-ebrating its 15th year in Mas-sachusetts. DeLeo, a member of the Winthrop Mixed Lodge #2057, also brought with him a proclamation from the House of Representatives congratulating the Grand Lodge on reaching such a signifi cant milestone.

National President Anthony Baratta also congratulated the Grand Lodge and its offi cers, past and present, for all of the hard work and dedication that enabled the organization to reach its 100th year. He spoke on the value of the work that the members of the Grand and Filial Lodges do, noting particularly the signifi cant charitable giving the organization undertakes each year to worthy causes such as the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, Alzheimer’s Asso-ciation, Doug Flutie Jr. Founda-tion for Autism, the Casa Monte Cassino, as well as the schol-

arship program that awards tens of thousands of dollars each year. He also spoke about ways to move the organization forward in the next 100 years, of the new goals the organiza-tion must set, and of the new mission it must endeavor upon to best serve the needs of this generation of Italian-Americans.

The fi nal speaker of the eve-ning was State President Car-melita Bello. She applauded the hard work of every offi cer and member, and recognized the three co-chairmen of the anniversary gala: State First Vice President Antonio Sestito, State Second Vice President Ronald Hill, and State Financial Secretary Margaret Olivieri.

The event continued well into the night with dinner and danc-ing. Guests were able to take in a slideshow of various photos from the previous 100 years, as well as catch up with friends old and new.

The Grand Lodge would like to thank their Silver level sponsor, the Benefi t Insurance Commis-sion, for helping to ensure the Gala’s success. We would also like to thank the advertisers in our 100th Anniversary Program Book, the centerpiece sponsors, the Walpole Police Department Honor Guard for presenting the colors, and all of the members and guests who attended this event.

LODGE NEWS

On Sunday, October 5, 2014, the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 of Natick hosted an afternoon pig roast attended by well over 100 members and guests.

During this event, Lodge Pres-ident Marisa Pilette welcomed State President Carmelita Bello and State Trustee Mary Ann Bello, who graciously accepted an invitation to celebrate long-time member Gloria Cullati for her 70 years of dedication and service.

As a young teenager in the mid-1930s, Gloria joined a Junior Lodge and actively par-ticipated by running dances and marching in parades, super-vised by senior members who helped put programs together.

In 1944, Gloria joined the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 and has remained an active member since. As she puts it, “there were a few lean years during the war when the lodge almost disbanded, but a few of us struggled to hold it together, and today it is the thriving lodge that you know and love.”

Honors Member Gloria Cullati

(L-R): Lodge President Marisa Pilette, member Gloria Cullati, and State President Carmelita Bello.

Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 honoree Gloria Cullati.

Gloria, who also celebrated her 93rd birthday in October, has held numerous offices throughout the years including those of recording secretary, vice president, mistress of cer-emonies, and trustee. Remain-ing passionate about her love of the Sons of Italy, Gloria continues to educate lodge members about the importance of giving to charity. She is out-spoken about being proud of the Italian culture and tradi-tions, the Italian language, and the Italian way of life, and about remaining true to our collective Italian heritage. She believes that lodge functions and dances help spread good will and that all Italians should join a Lodge.

She has always been extremely active in the coordination, selling tickets and attending functions including banquets and porchetta dinners. She volunteers her time and bakes her famous pizzelle for Natick Days, the weekly pasta nights, and the Lodge-hosted flea markets. For years she sold tickets, chaired and coordinated dinner dances, festive Car-nevale celebrations, and food prepared by lodge members for the annual Christmas Party where all donations collected go to local charities.

President Marisa Pilette pre-sented Gloria with a bouquet of roses and State President Carmelita Bello read and pre-sented Gloria with a citation on behalf of the Grand Lodge. She thanked Gloria for her years of dedication and tireless service to the Order of Sons of Italy in America and the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411. In the words of Lodge Recording Sec-retary Diane Piccioli, “Gloria Cullati represents and epito-mizes the ideals of the Order Sons of Italy in America: liberty, equality, and fraternity.”

The 2nd Annual Winthrop Mixed Lodge #2057 “Turkey Shoot” was bigger and better than ever. About 65 people

attended this year’s “shoot” and walked away with their prize winnings of turkeys, bags of vegetables, apple

cider, and assorted pies. Pro-ceeds will go to the Lodge’s h igh schoo l scho larsh ip fund.

LODGE NEWS

On Sunday, October 19, 2014, the Worcester Lodge #168 continued their tradition of laying a wreath at the statue of Christopher Columbus in memory of their deceased members. Lodge members were present at the ceremony, led by Lodge Presi-dent Michael Sacco.

After the ceremony, members of the comunity and of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St. Ann Parish joined Lodge members for the annual Memorial Mass in memory of members who had passed away over the previous year. The Lodge was proud to host the Memorial Mass and breakfast. Along with Lodge President Michael Sacco and Lodge Vice President Kevin Mercadante, attendees included State President Carmelita Bello, State Financial Secretary Margaret Olivieri, State Trustee MaryAnn Bello, and State Scholarship Commission Chairman Donna Giuliani, all members of the Lodge.

Fr. Jesus Martinez and Bishop Emeritus George Reuger were the co-celebrants of the mass. Bishop Reuger addressed the congrega-tion and noted that the Order of Sons of Italy in America reminds us that we do and should indeed give God all honor, that Italy is a country of many churches, and that we are all children of immi-grants. He reminded us that we must render to God what belongs to God and to man what belongs to man. He noted that much of what we have comes from Rome. He added that we are a signed people, that is, that we must be signs of God’s love to others and we must look for signs of God in others, and not get discouraged.

State President Carmelita Bello served as lector for the Mass. She announced the names of each deceased member of Worcester Lodge # 168 as a bell was rung in their memory. The Lodge has lost seven members since last year’s memorial mass: Margaret Ovian, Dorothy Tufano, Natale Losapio, Josephine Genatossio, Mary Jasper, Michael Campaniello, and Antonio Marchese.

These members and all deceased members of the Lodge will be greatly missed. After the mass, the Lodge sponsored a memorial breakfast available to everyone who attended, catered by Mike and Maria O’Connor. It was a wonderful opportunity for lodge members and parishioners to gather, remember, and celebrate the lives of our departed members. Everyone reminisced and shared the experiences they had with our now departed members.

It was a great morning for the Order Sons of Italy in America, an appropriate and memorable celebration for Italian Heritage Month! Thank you to all who participated in any way and all who made this day possible!

The Italian language class sponsored by the Tewksbury Lodge #2872 ended its second year with a dinner party at the Cafe Sicilia, where the class enjoyed a little bit of Italy in Tewksbury. The group met weekly from September to June and

studied the language, history, geography, and culture of Italy. In April, members of the class had the opportunity to attend a Metropolitan Opera movie presentation of Rossini’s “Cenerentola” (Cinderella) at the Showcase Cinema in Lowell.

At their 88th Anniversary Dinner Dance, the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 pre-sented the Woman of the Year Award to a very special person — Janet Pecorari.

President Marisa Pilette pre-sented Janet with a bouquet of roses, a wall plaque, and a special citation from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts in recognition of Janet’s dedica-tion. President Pilette noted, “when I think of Janet, courage comes to mind, and I marvel at all the things she is able to do. Some might not know that Janet is legally blind, but she has never allowed her inability to see to defi ne her. From play-ing bocce (at times better than some sighted players), to keep-ing the pots and pans clean at our weekly pasta night, when I think of Janet, the words that come to mind are ‘yes ma’am’. That’s her reply when anyone asks her to help with anything. Or she’ll just say, ‘what can I do?’Janet has exceeded the expected duties of a volunteer and her recognition as this Lodge’s Woman of the Year is evidence of her immense dedi-cation and devotion.”

She works full-time at The Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton as Assistant to the Pres-ident. She is articulate, smart, a role model, good hearted and witty, and she can tell some real serious jokes. She loves garden-ing on her balcony, country music, yard sales, garage sales, and fl ea markets, and is a great

cook and bocce player. Janet is the Lodge’s Wednes-

day pasta night dishwasher and public relation person. She helps organize and participates in the bi-annual fl ea market, Natick Days, pasta nights, and other events. She also sits on the Lodge’s board of directors.

For the second consecutive year, she has arranged for blind students from The Carrol Center for the Blind in Newton to play bocce on the Lodge’s courts. Without the advantage of sight, these kids were guided by the volunteers with beeping location devices.

On behalf of all the Lodge members, congratulations Janet and thank you for your constant dedication to the Lodge and community!

CASSATTEDI “ka-sa-ted-dee”

A Sicilian Christmas Ricotta Cheese Turnover

Recipes from the HomelandHomelandby Vita Orlando Sinopoli

Place ricotta cheese in a colander to drain.Put fl our in ten-inch bowl. Cut in shortening with knife and fork.

Add sugar and salt. Mix while adding water slowly. Before using all water, work red wine into mixture. (Wine causes dough to bubble when fried). Continue mixing dough until it holds together and all fl our is used. Knead dough to a smooth consistency. Separate into three portions. Roll each into a long piece. Cut roll into smaller portions approximately one-inch thick. Place in bowl and cover.

Transfer drained ricotta into bowl. Add orange rind, cinnamon and mix thoroughly by hand. With rolling pin, roll each piece of dough into paper-thin rounds. Place a tablespoon of ricotta in center of dough. Fold over (like turnovers). Press lightly around fi lling to allow inside air to escape. Then seal edges with crinkled pastry cutter or press edge with fork. Set aside on pastry cloth or a fl our-dusted tablecloth. Makes about twenty-four Cassattedi.

Pour enough oil in a ten-inch Tefl on skillet to cover bottom. Prick top of 6 Cassattedi at a time (with a pin) before placing in hot oil top down. When frying, turn each one with spatula until golden brown on both sides.

When any ricotta or fl uid escapes into the hot oil, the liquid will splatter and burn. Remove Cassattedi from oil. Clean skillet. Add and heat new oil and continue frying remaining Cassattedi.

Place fried Cassattedi in a serving platter layered with granulated sugar. Sprinkle additional sugar on each one. Serve hot or cooled.

Leftover Cassattedi must be refrigerated.
