Construction of Devonport Library is expected to be finished in December but it will not be open until mid-January, accord-ing to Auckland Council.

Marion Read, Auckland Council Service Delivery Manager said: “At one stage we were hoping this could be completed by Christmas. It is now unlikely and we will be

looking at an opening date in mid-January.”Time is needed after the construction to

install all the technology, furniture and fit-tings, as well as the stocking of the library.

The mid-January opening does not in-volve any additional costs and the project is still running on time and within budget, Read said.

There are no confirmed plans for the space on the ground floor of the old Devonport Area council offices after the temporary library vacates, Read said.

Stanley Bay is no longer officially a place after a name change slipped through without consultation.

The suburb established in the 1860s and settled twenty years later has, it seems, been legally renamed by the New Zealand Geo-graphic Board (NZGB) in 2007 without any fanfare. The entire suburb is now officially Stanley Point, a name originally referring only to the geographical feature of the point itself and later unofficially to the area around Stanley Point Road.

Jeremy Rotherham noticed the change when he moved back into his childhood home on Rutland Road earlier this year. Born in Stanley Bay in the early 1950s, he says he found the suburb much as he remembered it, albeit more prosperous, until he looked for his post code online.

“I typed in Stanley Bay and nothing came up. Then I typed in my street and it said “Stanley Point.’”

The same thing happened when he sub-scribed to The Listener and enrolled for the election, which prompted him to look into it further.

Rotherham found that the (NZGB) the official recorder of New Zealand place names, had made the name change in 2007. The schedule lists Stanley Point as a “new” suburb name, followed by a definitive “Not Stanley Bay.”

Since then, New Zealand Post, the Elec-toral Commission, Auckland Council’s GIS Viewer and Wises Maps have all followed

the board’s decision, dropping the old name in favour of the new.

Rotherham also noticed that some gov-ernment departments are still using the old name,: Statistics New Zealand, the Ministry of Education and the Royal New Zealand Navy. “We still call them Stanley Bay School, Stanley Bay Park, Stanley Bay Wharf,” he says.

Fullers Ferries still refers to the Stanley Bay ferry in its printed time table but Rother-ham says he noticed the electronic signs the Auckland Ferry Terminal changing to Stanley Point around May this year as well.

However many council documents and emails after the name change continue to refer to Stanley Bay and Stanley Bay wharf as well.

At Stanley Bay itself things are even more confused: Stanley Bay park sign is till there as is a sign for Stanley Bay dinghy lockers – although strangely both old North Shore City Council signs not updated by Auckland Council.

The Navy still has a sign saying Stanley Bay gate. The ferry wharf seems to only say ferry terminal on new signage.

Rotherham says the change most likely happened by mistake. But it needs to be fixed, he says. “Historic names are a mat-ter of cultural significance, which sounds a bit pompous but it is not. Our heritage is in names too,” he says.

If no one challenges the mistake, the next generation will eventually just accept the

new name, he says.Auckland Council should change the name

back to what it is still commonly known as, he says. “They should just gazette it again and change it back. All they need to do is fill out a form.”

Rotherham says he has written letters to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, the Auckland Council Heritage Advisory Panel, and also Chris Darby, the Auckland council-lor who lives at Stanley Point.

“I have had no response or acknowl-edgement from them, only an empathetic response from Devonport Heritage,” he says.

“I think I have only noticed because I have been away for 45 years. And I am only point-ing it out. Council should fix it up.”

Community support means the world to dairy owners Matt and Yogi Patel, whose Merani Street

dairy was robbed two weeks ago, have been overwhelmed by the community support they received in the aftermath of their ordeal.

“We have received heaps and heaps of cards and flowers from people and we would like to thank everyone who has come and supported us. We are very thankful,” says Matt.

On October 11, four robbers used a stolen car as a battering ram to break into the dairy and stole the till that contained $400. Police recovered the till and cash, but the Patels were left with a list of damage and did not have insur-ance to cover them.

The Flagstaff offered to run a Givealittle fundraising campaign on their behalf. But the Patels said they felt well supported by the com-munity and were adamant that the best way to help them was to come and shop at the dairy

“That would help me to run my business better,” says Matt.

“We have had so much support already and we don’t want to accept money. A couple of people have absolutely insisted on giving us money but we have put that aside for the girls’ birthdays that are coming up in November,” he says. Arpita is turning 11 and Paayal 15.

The Patels’ landlady Marge Rogerson has also been very supportive. “She arranged the builders quickly so that the shop could reopen within a couple of days and we didn’t lose any more of our business,” says Matt, who is now considering putting a roller shutter into the door

for additional safety.Rogerson lives at the back of the section.

She and her late husband Reg bought the dairy 38 years ago and ran it themselves during the 1970s. She wishes she could help the Patels even more. Their youngest daughter Arpita affectionately calls her Nana.

At the time of the robbery, at 11.45pm on Sat-urday 11 October, Arpita was awake in the next room. She wasn’t feeling well and watched TV. When the robbers rammed a stolen car into the dairy’s front door, she felt the building vibrate from the impact and heard a huge bang, she says.

“The first two nights after that I did not sleep, but now I try to go to sleep with the main lights on and my mum and dad sitting in the living room. That’s better,” Arpita says.

The Patels have owned the Merani Street Dairy for 13 years. Originally from Gujarat in Western India, they came to New Zealand 15 years ago and worked in the Tuakau Four-Square before moving to Devonport.

Last week the family were upbeat as they celebrated Diwali, the Indian New Year.

“We have been getting text messages wishing us a happy New Year all day,” Matt said.

The four men involved in the robbery were from outside the North Shore, police say.

They arrived in stolen vehicles and after they robbed the diary were chased by police.

The car fled at high speed, driving on the wrong side of the road at times and at one point deliberately reversed into a patrol vehicle.

• The men were charged with burglary, unlaw-fully getting into a vehicle and driving incidents as well. One was charged with aggravated as-sault for backing into the patrol car. Additional charges may be laid. They are in custody and were due to appear at North Shore District Court just after the Flagstaff went to print.

and require no further council funding. The restructuring will also create an estimated eight jobs in Devonport.

Devonport’s recycling facility was estab-lished in 1977 as the first of its kind in the country. It currently operates primarily as a waste transfer station and landscaping supply company. It is run by a private business whose contract expires the end of June,2015.

The renewed focus on maximum recycling is a result of council’s goal of Zero Waste by 2040. A 30 percent reduction of waste to landfill by 2027 is part of the plan. Council’s aim for the annual diversion of waste from Devonport is 914 tonnes.

Community group Ngataringa Organic Garden has expressed an interest in running the new recycling centre as a not-for-profit project.

It is currently completing a feasibility study and survey that have been funded by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

The survey collects data on residents’ current use of the transfer station, proposes a shop to resell inorganic goods and asks for input.

The survey can be found on the Ngataringa Organic Garden’s Facebook page.

The area earmarked for a new skatepark, playground and toilet block at Ngataringa Park has soil that only supports light-weight structures, a geotechnical report says.

Engineering firm Geoconsult drilled eight boreholes at the proposed site and recom-mended playground structures be “lightweight and founded at the ground surface”.

It says a new skatepark could not follow the model of the current concrete facility in the centre of the park.

structures proposed in the current plans would require extensive earthworks to either build up the soil level of the site by about half a metre with a new cap and cover materials, or to maintain the level by excavating and replacing soil, which is much more costly, the report says.

Auckland Council spokesperson Nigel Hor-rocks says a separate site-contamination report will also be completed in the coming weeks. Each report cost $6,000.

Explore Group told the Flagstaff it would consider a service to Devonport as an option in the future. Fullers currently has a monopoly on the route.

Devonport’s history of chemical-free weed treatment is under threat.

Auckland Council is beginning to spray sports fields and is pushing to cut the cost of steam treatment of local roads in its Long Term Plan.

Cheltenham resident Sharon Byron-McKay was perplexed to find a letter in her mailbox giving her less than 48 hours’ notice about treatment of the Vauxhall Rd sports fields with herbicide Glyphosate, also known as “Roundup.”

She has launched a petition against the spray and collected more than 100 signa-tures in one afternoon. Byron-McKay has put a copy at the temporary library for people to sign and will present the petition at the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board’s November meeting.

A local resident since early 2000, Byron-McKay was a fan of the North Shore City’s chemical-free policy.

She also remembers a previous chemical treatment of Domain fields in late 2000 and the stir it caused. “The then Devonport Community Board said they would do it only once and look for alternative weed

treatment in the future.“There even was a bit of vandalism on

the cricket pitch as a protest to the spray-ing and then board member Mike Cohen said at the time the repairs were using up money that could otherwise be used to look for those alternatives,” she says.

But instead, 14 years later, the council is returning with chemicals Byron-McKay says.

North Shore’s steam treatment of roadside weeds is also under threat, as Auckland Council pushes cost-cutting measures across the region, stating that steam treatment is costlier than chemicals.

The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board has raised concerns. At their 14 October meeting, they responded to a Mayoral Proposal that they “do not support the introduction of chemical spraying and agrichemical use in reserves as the primary basis of controlling weeds and pests.”

However, the board said that occasional chemical treatment was necessary in dif-ficult cases.

Byron-McKay says the community wants a recommitment to no spraying.

An indoor playground, new signage, re-furbishment and the addition of a McCafe is part of a $1million upgrade of Belmont McDonalds, says owner Raj Singh.

Singh says he purchased the Belmont franchise in December last year. He already owns two branches in Glenfield.

The new playground will be set up in a 33 square metre glass-walled extension along the corner of Bayswater and Lake Roads.

The old north-facing roof sign will be re-moved and a new sign will go up on the east-ern/Lake Road side of the building instead.

$1 million upgrade at Belmont McDonalds

A promised $50 million upgrade of Lake Road between Hauraki and Belmont appears less than secure.

In April 2013, then chair of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chris Darby announced that substantial Auckland Transport funding had been secured.

Auckland Transport was somewhat vague about the funding when approached for clarifica-tion last week.

$54 million Lake Road is a significant project and it is subject to the upcoming Auckland Council budget process.”

Current local board chair Mike Cohen believes the money is far from secure. The current board is back to square one in securing funds for a so-lution to the peninsula’s most congested access road, he says.

Cohen says the promised funding had not been tagged. “The $52 million simply wasn’t linked to any particular projects that had been identified,” he says.

“Now we are in the process of doing a Corridor Management Plan, which will identify possible solutions and what they will cost and how benefi-cial they will be. We then can develop a business plan for some of them,” he says.

The board’s recent Local Board Plan acknowl-edges that many residents want to increase the number of lanes on Lake Road. However, the New Zealand Transport Agency claims that road expansion can generate traffic that re-congests the new road.

“If more of us leave our cars at home and use public transport, scooters, cycle or walk, conges-tion will reduce,” the plan says.

Cohen says a four-lane road has other nega-tive effects as well. “We want to maintain our neighbourhoods and communities and don’t want a road that is too wide for kids and older people to cross,” he says.

“But we are still looking at options to address congestion, including making it more attrac-tive for people to get out of their cars and use alternative transport. The current state is hugely frustrating during rush hours and on the week-end,” Cohen says.

• What’s a few million? When news of the Lake Rd upgrade first broke in May 2013 (with suggestions of a four lane highway) the proposed budget was $48 million After 2013 Chris Darby and Mike Cohen have consistently talked about $52 million. But when the Flagstaff sought clari-fication from Auckland Transport last week it put the figure at around $54 million.

Nadia Sakey is combining life as a styl-ish interior designer with a stint as a charity boxer in Fight Night.

She is aiming to raise $4,250 for Canteen - the charity supporting young people who are living with cancer – at the Ringside Night Fight November 8.

Sakey, a former advertising account direc-tor, doesn’t have a corporate sponsor. “I don’t need a corporation because I have a village behind me,” she says about the support she has received from Devonport.

A week ago, she had raised $3,500 and was the top fundraiser of the event. “I have had tremendous support from locals, residents and businesses,” she says. A table for 10 on

the night, including a three-course gourmet dinner, was snapped for $3,000.

The Bayswater resident has been training for 12 weeks and fits it in around two young girls (Molly, 5 and Hope, 8) and work full-time work at Firefly Light and Design.

She has spent evenings and weekends - doing punches, crunches and runs. “I have always been a fighter, but (in the past) kickboxing. This retraining to proper boxing has been a test of physical endurance and fortitude,” she says.

Sakey recently recovered from an eight-year struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and training for Canteen is a celebration of that too. “I have beaten it and come right again

and am grateful for that,” she says.Sakey is raising money for 19-year-old

Amy, a mother of 18-month-old daughter Karleigh and a hairdresser. Amy suffers from Hodgkin lymphoma and has had chemo and radiation therapy. “She will find out just before the fight whether she is in the clear or not. As a hairdresser, losing her hair has been quite hard for her,” says Sakey.

She says Amy’s battle has put her own struggles into perspective. “My problems are small. My family is healthy for the moment and I am grateful for that and want to give back,” Sakey says.

A graffiti art project on a Victoria Theatre wall may face planning hurdles with council saying resource consent is needed for any spray painting of a Category A heritage building.

Victoria Theatre Trust co-chair Margot McRae said no consent for graffiti art on the Vic’s southern wall was needed as the image would neither be permanent nor contain any lettering.

“I have checked the signage rules and the image is not a sign or advertising because it doesn’t contain any lettering. Plus, we are not changing anything permanently on the build-ing,” she said.

But Auckland Council has a different view. “There are a number of rules under the District Plan that require that consent is obtained for any alterations to the external appearance of the theatre, most notably due to the Category A Scheduled status of the building.

“Painting of a mural or artwork on the exte-rior of the building would trigger these rules, and consent is required,” an Auckland Council

Bayswater resident Sparrow Philips designed an art deco image of a 1920s female movie star to be spray painted during the first three days of the Devonport Art’s Festival (DAF) this November.

McRae said the Vic’s trust board and cinema operator all loved Sparrow’s stencil-shaped im-age and thought it would be a big improvement on the current look of the barren village-side wall. “Graffiti sounds like it’s horrible but what Sparrow has planned is actually a beautiful im-age,” she said.

“Council staff have contacted the festival coordinator to inform her of the requirement for a resource consent, and have offered to facilitate a meeting with the trustees of the Victoria Thea-tre and heritage specialists to discuss possible options for an acceptable outcome,” a council spokesperson said.

No date seemed to have been set for the meeting when the Flagstaff went to press. The Vic graffiti event, along with another one by Cinzah Merkens at the Firefly Light and Design building in Wynyard St, was instigated by DAF coordinator Toni Van Tonder as a fresh addition to the second biennial event.

Sparrow Phillips says the image he wants to spray-paint on the Victoria Theatre is “a tribute to the era of the building.

“It’s art decoish and fits with the building’s aesthetics,” he says.

At about 3 x 2 metres it is small for a graf-fiti art project, he says. “The colours are also very in keeping with the historic building,” Philips says.

“My goal is for it to be aesthetically pleas-ing to the community while adding vibrancy, life and energy to Devonport’s beige culture,” he says.

The full-time artist lives in Bayswater. “I spray-paint everything from big petrol tanks to interior office walls. I also do design work

“This month, I was part of a 200 square metre project in Avondale at the Whau Arts Festival. I love doing community-based work. It gets your work out there and I’m okay if people paint our walls out later or repaint them,” he says.

Sparrow says that his graffiti art on a hoard-ing of the Devonport library had been painted out within a day.

“Tagging is destructive, graffiti is a narrow term for a letter-based wild style. What I do is just about art. I am doing the Vic for the cause, the cause to change people’s perception of graffiti,” he says.

I have been approached by some of whom I know only by sight who have commented on Wayne Mapp’s letter of 3 October. Comments have ranged from “methinks he doth protest too much” to “He offers no proof”.

However my interest is in Mr Mapp’s exam-ple of the use of the provisions of the Marine and Coastal Area Act 2011 for reclamations of the Auckland commercial port. I am sceptical, as I remembered how reclamations from the sea were dealt with from a Harbour Board endowment title with H M the Queen as owner.

The old title to the seabed had an outer limit of a line from The Watchman to the outer end of the Mechanics Bay breakwater. The line was apparently adjusted in the early 90s. With the advent of computer-produced titles, a change was made from having a proclamation for each reclamation registered against the title, to the new system of having a two-lot subdivision on a deposited plan for each reclamation. Lot 1 was the reclaimed land and Lot 2 was the balance lot of the seabed title.

My research shows a recent title issued for the current stage of the aborted reclamation that was to have continued out toward Devonport, which prompted those mock-up illustrations of containers stacked seven high. The 2011 Act appears to have been irrelevant to the issue of title, however it could have a profound effect on any existing leasehold titles on the waterfront if they were to be freeholded.Graham Pettersen

I have been a resident of Bayswater for over 50 years and I am supportive of Graham Pettersen’s assessment of the coastal marine law change as published in the Sept ember 19 Flagstaff.

If Wayne Mapp claims there was no secrecy or secret deals as stated in his reply published 3rd October, as a Bayswater resident and the local Mp at the time, why did he not fulfil his obligation to advise the Local Community Board of the implications of the law change?

It seems that no one, including the present MP Maggie Barry, was aware of the situa-tion until the fire sale of public land to the Bayswater Marina owners had been done. The sale price was probably $30 million undervalued.

Several of the key conditions of consents for building the marina have never been met; e.g. Takapuna Boating Club building refurbishment and losing its valuable haul-out area on the understanding that a new haul-out area would be provided within the marina development.

The land zoning consents are for marine

related buildings only, with cafe and public amenity development. This was reinforced by the decision of the Appeal Court, which stated that houses are not appropriate. Taka-puna Grammar Rowing Club facilities are a perfect example of what would be appropriate for the site.

The marine industry and boating public has lost far too many waterfront facilities due to bad legislation and Council greed and Bayswater is another example.

I would like Dr Mapp to clarify what reclaimed land he refers to in the Viaduct as development seems to be either on existing land or on the top of wharves. Is this another example of allowing developers to buy land at fire sale prices from Ports of Auckland/ Coun-cil? Dr Mapp states ‘it is not surprising that the reclaimers and developers of such land will want to get freehold title, since leasehold title may not be typically regarded as a good long-term ownership vehicle’. However such land returns long-term income for the public and keeps controls on development of coastal land. Short-term profit is short sighted. Ron Copeland

Electricity building a creative power-house

All centenarians have stories to tell. As does a prominent local building that turns 100 this year. The former Devonport Power Sta-tion was built to supply electric-ity to Devonport homes. It later became a welfare kitchen, then a laundry and a dry-cleaners. In 1987 it underwent one of Devonport’s few loft conversions. Its three apart-ments have been the home of artists, writers and musicians. Maire Vieth looks back.

One hundred years ago, the Devonport Power Station at 47 – 49 Church St brought power to the people – electrical power that is. It was built out of brick in 1914 to house coal-fired generators that would supply electricity to 1,600 homes. When the electricity started flow-ing in 1915, the building changed the lives of Devonport residents dramatically. Houses now had power for cooking, heating and lighting. By 1916 there were 150 street lights in Devonport and a year later the whole of the sewerage sys-tem was fitted with electrical pumps.

The coal-fired generators were supplied by the Duder Brothers from their wharf at the lower end of Church St.

Said to have been designed by W. Robinson, the large building was an architectural celebra-tion of the early arrival of electricity to the Devonport Borough, according to the Historic Places Trust (HPT).

Today, the Category 2 heritage building is a rarity as a surviving example of New Zealand’s early electricity schemes and of the Free Clas-sical style popular for commercial buildings during the interwar years, and before the more widespread Art Deco designs after the 1920s.

The station was initially run by a private company, The Electricity Supply Corpora-tion, contracted by the Devonport Borough Council. In 1922 the council bought the station for £61,000. Three years later, the regional Waitemata Power Board was set up and built a central plant further north and Devonport was transferred to the national grid. The new board used the Devonport plant only as an emergency station until they closed it down in the late

1920s. This was also partially due to complaints over pollution from the coal smoke, according to a North Shore City Council heritage report.

In the early 1930s, the building was used as a kitchen and depot by the Devonport Welfare Association, which provided relief to the poor during the Great Depression. The North Shore News reported on the association’s 1933 annual meeting: the depot was open from 8 am until 5 pm, five days a week, and on Saturday morn-ings too, staffed by 20 local volunteer women. “A sewing guild was established under the charge of the Mayoress, Mrs. H. F. W. Meikle,” the report says. More than 8000 articles were donated to the association in 1932 during its annual drive.

During the winter of 1932, 130 families received a weekly supply of vegetables. “Last season 72,000 plants were distributed free. This year’s estimate is set down for 154,000 plants. Vegetables and seeds will be stored at the military camp, Narrow Neck,” the North Shore New report says.

Other services included free firewood, cheap meat and bread, boot repairing, ferry tickets and clothing at wholesale rates.

For the next 50 years, the building was used as a laundry by the Northern Bagwash Company, later renamed the Northern Laundry Company. From 1941, the North Shore Dry Cleaning Company moved in until 1980.

In the early 1980s, a panel beater, tropical fish breeder and potter all briefly set up in the former power station. The building was in a dilapidated state by 1985, when it was sold for around $30,000. The price including a

The buyers were Merle and Dave Wood-hams together with another couple, who spent two years developing it into three loft apart-ments. Devonport Heritage architect Jeremy Salmond designed the middle unit, Apartment 2, for the Woodhams.

Salmond remembers the huge project well. “The building was derelict and filthy. It had holes in it, concrete pit on the floor, engines. Everything had to be cleaned and redone,” he says.

“It was an early Devonport loft conversion of a historic building, followed later by the Ma-sonic Hall on Victoria Road and King Edward Parade’s Elizabeth House and the Fire Station on Calliope Road,” Salmond says.

The challenge was scale. “No one has a need for a building that size, so we had to break the building’s large industrial scale up into a liveable one. Then we had to get light inside the walls and garden spaces along the northern side,” he says. The entire southern side of the building, about a third of its footprint, is an open parking space, generously reaching up into the roof.

Salmond’s design conserved some of the original features. “We kept the trusses in the roof exposed, which give you a sense of the building’s original scale. And the great thing is that you can have this quite crude and course and industrial scale against the finer things of life, like art,” he says.

Salmond is referring to the Woodhams’ extensive art collection that covered the walls of their home.

Merle Woodhams was a painter and a sec-tion of the apartment was dedicated to a large studio accessible from the road. It had a small garden, where she painted but also taught life drawing classes for years both there and later at the Devonport Community House. Merle’s classes were later run by another local artist, Suza Lawrence.

When the Woodhams left, Selwyn Muru, purchased their apartment. Muru is well known for “Wharoa,” his seven-metre-high gate on Aotea Square. He also created a distinctive

The apartment’s current owners, Dave Bal-com and Peter Addis, have an “all-encompass-ing passion for art” as well and have collected contemporary New Zealand art for many years.

Balcom was gallery manager at the Depot Artspace for three years and now works at Auckland Art Gallery. Other well known personalities to live a the building include art-ists Marilyn Tweedy and Rob Tucker, former longtime Flagstaff reporter Angie Kemp and her husband Geoff, an Auckland University political studies lecturer, and singer Debbie Harwood and husband recording engineer Paul.

Balcom is fascinated by the artistic con-nections of the building. “The unit in the back, was developed by Marilyn Tweedy, who is said to have been part of the et al. collective that represented New Zealand at the 2005 Venice Biennale.”

Each apartment has its own distinct look, says Balcom. “Back then, each couple hired their own architect to execute custom designs of the spaces. Unit 3 is a bit more contemporary, ours more traditional and the front one is more open space,” he says.

The floor spaces are huge, with some taken up by stairs and garden spaces. “Ours and the one in the back are pretty volumi-nous with about 400 square metres of floor space. The front apartment is slightly less,” he says.

“These days, it would be more likely to be turned into 12 units to generate revenue, but the way it is maximises the quality of living for the residents here,” he says.

Currently, the apartments are full of artists too. Merle Woodhams’ studio has been used by Rob Tucker for about six years. The front apartment is rented by Jay and Suzie Dixon and the back was owned until recently by singer Debbie Harwood and husband Paul Jeffery, a sound and lighting engineer.

• On Sunday 9 November, Balcom and Ad-dis are organising a third annual Church Street Art Sale at the building. It is run as a studio sale for artists (including Dixon and Tucker) to dispose of unsold or returned work from their dealers or galleries. They have selected 27 established artists to sell over 200 pieces. It runs from 11 am until 4 pm.

I was dismayed to see that the Vauxhall Road rugby fields have been fenced off for the past month and there has been no activity. I would estimate that there is at least a 1,000 metres of hire fencing surrounding the grounds and all I can see is thousands of dollars of ratepayer money being spent on this unneces-sary fence. So today (16 Oct) I read the sign on the fence from the community board and from the council parks authority advising that they regret the inconvenience; however they are going to carry out the upgrading of drainage and improvement to the grounds to ensure it is able to cope with its high use by the community. It should be open again by winter 2015!!!

About three or four years ago these same

grounds were subject to intense upgrading, coring and reseeding grass etc. There was no fencing. What I object to is the use of costly fencing; it is occurring all over Auckland and it is a disgusting waste of ratepayer money. Please do not tell me it is a requirement of health and safety as that excuse needs to be challenged by our council representatives and it is not happening. I was informed by a local that it was a requirement to fence because of the death of a child who was run over by a worker mowing council fields last year. Whilst that was a terrible accident I cannot believe that is why it is fenced, otherwise every time a field is to be mowed we would erect fencing. If it is to keep people off then put up a sign saying: fields Closed and surround the field with bright

orange tape on pickets. This is a sand field renewal project involving the renewal of all drainage infrastructure and the establishment of a new sand carpet profile. The sports fields are fenced off for the applica-tion of herbicide at the very start of a project. There is then a waiting period of two weeks for the herbicide to take effect before construction starts. This means the site is fenced off for two weeks with no works taking place. It would cost more money to take the fencing down post-spraying and then re-erect it before the civil works begin. The physical/civil works have begun today (17th October) with the removal of the existing concrete cricket pitch, and will continue for the next two months. Information signs detailing the project have been attached to the perimeter fence to help inform the public.

Council’s contractor owns the fencing, so there is no cost for it to the ratepayer.

Moves to outlaw indoor open fires won’t give owners of heritage homes the right to get rid of chimneys, according to Devonport Heritage.

Auckland Council is proposing to ban indoor open fires in city areas. The by-law could come into effect next May, following hearings in February. The proposed veto aims to reduce air pollution.

However Devonport Heritage spokesperson Margot McRae says: “Owners of houses with chimneys shouldn’t panic and think they have

got to demolish their chimneys.“As original features of heritage houses

chimneys are protected.“It’s hard to imagine our old villas with their

chimneys chopped off and it would be a very strange look.” Devonport Heritage will be making a submission on the proposed by-law.

Some companies are offering units that can be fitted into existing fireplaces.

The new fires emit smoke particles at a level which are compliant under current Clean Air Act guidelines.

The new principal of St Leos school will face an early test – a fence building competi-tion run by Peter Wolfkamp from The Block at the school’s fair.

Elizabeth Walker will be part of a competi-tion where adults’ and childrens’ teams will see how fast they can build a fence. The fast-est time on the day will win a Ryobi drill set.

Wolfkamp, a resident builder (and the site foreman on The Block NZ) wanted a way to help the School raise funds for this year’s fair.

He will be demonstrating how to build the Align fence as seen on The Block NZ.

St Leo’s ‘Village Fair’ is billed as having

something for everyone, whether it’s rum-maging for a bargain at the White Elephant stall, flexing muscles in gumboot throwing, jumping on the bouncy castle, stocking up on books, summer plants, scrumptious cakes, homemade preserves, hand-made crafts, and enjoying live performances.

Isaac Denny won gold medals and a cup at the New Zealand National Gym Sports Championships at Waitakere Trusts Arena earlier this month.

The Bayswater Primary School student participated in six disciplines and, on the first day, came first in the floor, pommel horse, parallel bars and rings.

His North Harbour Level 5 Boys’ Team also won gold. On the second day, Isaac (10) competed on all six apparatus and achieved gold overall.

The cup Isaac wons for the highest aver-age score on all apparatus from Levels 4, 5 and 6.

Competitors are grouped according to their level, not their age, and Isaac was up against some much older children.

More twins than meet the eye at TGS

The number of twins currently enrolled at Takapuna Grammar School is even greater than reported in our October 3 issue. A list of 15 sets of twins was originally supplied by the school but it has now confirmed it has 18 sets enrolled.

Twins Bridget and Ciara Connolly, Ben and Sam Robertson and Mackenzie and Storm Robertson all go to the school.

Markus Somerville, is also a twin but his twin sister Rikki does not attend the school.

A car crashed into the traffic islands on King Edward Parade outside Elizabeth House at 7 pm last Saturday night, closing the road to traffic. Fire service, police and an ambulance attended to a man driving the car.

A group of 19 artists are being encour-aged to push their own boundaries and that of the audience Outside the Square.

As part of the Devonport Arts Festival, the artists will each exhibit three works.

Organiser Robyn Gibson says: “This opportunity brings together artists who are established conceptual thinkers and have diverse cultural involvement with their communities.

“The mediums artists will explore are painting, photography, printmaking, sculp-ture and installation.”

Visiting the rainforests of Borneo Snowboarding SuccessDuring the last week of Term 3 the

school’s snowboarding team competed at the North Island Secondary School Snowboard Competition at Turoa Ski Field, Mount Ruapehu.

Two teams (boys and girls) went to the competition and they both had an extremely successful trip. While day one started off rough and the mountain was closed, day two provided perfect conditions and the competitors were off.

Brenden Beyer, Billy Harris, Sam Hunter and Robert Milne competed in the Slopestyle event demonstrating immense skill and placing very highly as a team. Out of the four Robert made it into the final, a huge achievement for a junior competing for the first time.

The third day offered perfect conditions yet again and both boys and girls competed in the Bordercross event. Brenden, Robert, Sam and Tom Parkin, represented the boys and all four of them made it into the final.

The girls team also competed in this event and despite a tremendous effort the team did not move into the second round. Sam Hunter had a particularly

successful competition, gaining first overall in the junior boys’ category, and he was the highest-scoring junior boy out of all the North Island secondary schools that competed.

He is the first Takapuna Grammar student to gain this award, a truly outstanding achievement. Both teams

did tremendously well, and their combined score placed Takapuna Grammar fifth overall out of the 38 schools that competed, which is an exceptional result for a city school and both of the teams.

The TGS golf championship was held recently. Ten students across Years 9 to 13 played two rounds of golf at the local Waitemata Club course. Bridget Connolly shot a combined score of 161 to win the cup, nine shots ahead of Sam Hinds in second place. Both played well and under their handicap. Last year’s champion Ethan Sangster came in third. The future of TGS golf looks promising with a number of young golfers now playing competitively for the local club.

Three Takapuna Grammar School students have been selected for the Under 17 New Zealand cycling team. Oscar Elworthy, Jacob Kench and Harry Waine made the team last week. This is a great achievement for the Year 10 and Year 11 boys.

All three boys agreed that they loved cycling due to the competitiveness, the enjoyment and being able to “hang out with friends”, all while staying fit. The benefits of cycling include early

morning training, therefore it’s not too time consuming. This means they have time for homework and other interests. Oscar, Jacob and Harry all comment that cycling is both an individual and a team sport and is a social sport to participate in. Cycling is a lifelong sport and they all have goals of cycling for New Zealand and doing well in the events they have coming up.

No one, including the teachers, knew what to expect as we landed in the ridicu-lously humid rainforest that was Malaysian Borneo. Filled with snakes, crocodiles, many different types of monkeys and orang-utans and fried rice, we found our-selves in unfamiliar territory as we cruised down the Kinabatangan River.

Growing to nearly six feet, we watched in awe and realised exactly why orangutan translates to ‘person of the forest’. Until you see monkeys and orang-utans in real life, you have no idea how possible Planet of the Apes really is.

The 2014 trip consisted of 12 keen geography and biology students. In 14 days we travelled around Borneo and Malaysia, on river cruises, and staying in village homestays. We saw cheeky Pigtail monkeys on the forest floor with the baby monkeys play fighting, to the more expe-rienced monkeys keeping guard on the canopy on the trees of the river banks. On most cruises, it monsoon rained every af-ternoon when we were out on the boats. This would normally lead to relief from the hot air, until we realised that the giant raindrops were very warm and in fact were flooding our boats.

After a little diversion to Kuala Lumpur airport, our second home, we arrived in Kuching, literally meaning Cat City. Our two days in Kuching were filled with tours, shopping, rice and a lot of insect repellent, before we moved to a village in the rural parts of Kuching, and stayed in different homestays. We all got involved in the cul-tural experience of the village, which in-cluded dancing the traditional dance and having a try at the local instruments made of bamboo. Kuala Lumpur, a stopover the girls were excited about, resulted in a shopping spree that spread over two days.

Overall the trip was an amazing and eye-opening experience. A big thank you from both the students and parents to Mr. Smith and Miss Sladen for organising eve-rything, and for keeping every student un-der control during the 13 days. We all ap-preciate all the work you did to make this trip as incredible and memorable as it was.

Breast cancer can touch everyone, says Joyce Oorschot, the office manager at Belmont Intermediate School.

It did just that at the school last Wednes-day with students and teachers alike dressing up in pink for a day to help raise awareness for the disease.

Students, teachers, parent helpers and even principal Bruce Cunningham, strut-ted in pink across school grounds. There were pink locks, boas, flowers, cowboy hats, velvet robes, bunny ears, tutus, to name just a few.

Oorschot, who lost a friend to breast cancer while still in her 20s, said the gold-coin pink mufti day raised $800.

“Everyone is affected by breast cancer, whether they have had it or know some-one who has. I knew our amazing parent community would get behind this and encourage their children to dress up in pink for today.”

Peter Thorne’s all-boy class was no exception, Oorschot says.

“The boys were great and so was Peter who came with a pink wig and moustache.”

The Navy were out to compete in the 2014 Coastal Class, with two of their Sail Training Craft this year. As well as the wider race to consider, there was a strong sense of (friendly) competition between the two 40- foot Chico yachts.

The two crews were made up of a wide range of staff, including trainees, qualified officers and sailors, and civilians working with the RNZN.

The Chicos are used regularly by the Navy to teach and reinforce core mariner skills for officers and sailors under training. In addition, they are used for fleet expeditions and adventurous training to foster teamwork in a challenging maritime environment.

There were over 140 yachts registered for the 119 mile course from Devonport Wharf to the historic Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands.

Vauxhall Primary School teacher Palo Shanahan ran a NERF gun strategy game as a one-day school holiday programme. Forty three chil-dren enrolled including three girls.

The kids brought their own guns and Shanahan provided 200 darts for ammunition. The game’s goal was to refill the Humans’ fuel tanks so they could escape from the Zom-bies. The focus was on strategy and outmanoeuvring the opposition. “At the same time, the children were able to let out their PlayStation cravings in the real world,” Shanahan says.

“The games were all based on tactics, team organisation, defence and attack, flanking, finding shooting opportunities. The kids ran around from ten in the morning until four in the afternoon and had fun,” he says.

“There were no injuries and lots of rules and control and the violent aspect of the shooting was out-weighed by the connections kids made with friends and the benefits of teamwork.”

I had set up a Microsoft Account and I understood that you could easily re-set the password by going online on another computer and logging in to your Microsoft account… but this has not worked. Now what?A: Unfortunately, that method of changing your password via your Microsoft Account does not always seem to work. I strongly recommend that when you set up a new user on a Windows 8 computer that you set it up as a Local Account and not a Microsoft Account. If you cannot reset your password, then I’m afraid that the only thing you can do is to run a System Recovery program to restore your computer. This comes in two options – keeping your data or wiping the drive and restoring it to how it was when you first got the computer. Obviously it is inadvisable to do the latter unless you have backed up your data first. Most Windows 8 computers will have this functionality built in.

On a more general note, if you are letting a child use your laptop, it is generally a good idea to set up two logon profiles – one for you and one for them. And don’t tell them your password! Once you have set this up, then you can apply ‘Family Safety’ settings to their profile to control what they have access to on the internet etc. But most of all, it gives you a ‘backdoor’ to get in if they lock themselves out again.

Toys are fun, especially for sixty-something writer and archaeologist Dave Veart.

Research for his latest book included play-ing a few games of Mindcraft, collecting doll heads and burning his fingers when picking up a 1950s iron toy steam locomotive.

The book Hello Girls and Boys: A New Zealand Toy Story, is to be published this November.

It’s an accessible history of New Zealand’s economy, society and culture – all based on toys. Veart has done a similar thing before in How to Cook your Weka, a history of New Zealand cookbooks.

(31), love their toys from the 1980s and 1990s; the video games Doom and The Sims, or Ninja Turtle and Power Ranger action figures. “And I raided their childhoods shamelessly for the book,” says Veart. Unfortunately his parents threw most of his own toys away, he says.

Rogernomics and the end to import restric-tions did away with local toys. It killed nearly all of New Zealand’s toy manufacturers, Veart says. “In 1987, 90 percent of toy sales that Christmas were imports,” he says. An unlikely survivor was Holdson, a producer of jigsaw puzzles and board games run by the third gen-eration of the original owners.

In the early nineteenth century, toys had been mostly home-made and girls played very much

like boys. Weapons were popular. Newspapers were filled with reports on the destruction they caused. There is a theory that archaeologists find so many broken dolls because the girls acted their rough and tumble games out with them, Veart says.

English visitors often described New Zealand children as “wild,” he says, but in the late nineteenth century truancy laws and other controls changed that. Plunket was part of domesticating girls’ play via doll shows and demonstration of mothering skills. Boys were drawn to the Meccano construction sets.

Ironically, just as feminism took off, so did pink and princesses in girls’ toys. “Girls were discovered as a new market and got a lot more toys, including Polly Pocket, Sylvanian Fami-lies and My Little Pony, he says.

Maori toys have an interesting history too, Veart says. “Lots of adults played with toys, chiefs and demi-gods. It was a kind of aris-tocratic behaviour of those who had time for pleasure,” he says. Some Maori toys influenced their European derivatives. “We have a hybrid version of Knucklebone in New Zealand. Maori brought a juggling element to it.”

Public speaking, at the top of the fear list for many, comes naturally to Nate Dirksen the North Shore Intermediate School Speech Contest champion.

But it wasn’t always so. The Year 8 Bel-mont Intermediate School (BIS) student has been a standout speech-writer since his days at Stanley Bay primary school.

Initially giving a speech was scary and hen chosen for the speech finals in Year 6, Nate declined.

Landing the lead in the school play The Pied Piper helped him overcome his fear, he says. “It really boosted my confidence so much. Now I actually enjoy it so much that speaking in front of people has become my dream job,” he says.

Nate also sings in the BIS rock band Riot. “Being up there makes me feel good. I like entertaining people and making them laugh,” he says.

The topic of his winning speech was a more serious matter. “It was about how advertising actually manipulates you while pretending to be your friend,” he says.

Nate had three sources of inspiration. “It started when my 23-year-old sister did a university project about how advertising is just everywhere. Then I saw a video of how images of women in magazines are Photoshopped and how it makes real women feel bad about themselves. And finally, there was a comedian at the Comedy Festival who

read out the letter he got from advertisers talking to him as if they were his friend,” he says.

keting letter addressing him as “Hi Nate”. He didn’t like the false intimacy of the greeting. “Until then I didn’t really realise how big the influence of advertising is on us,” he says.

It is not the first year BIS has won the speech competition. The school was a win-ner in 1986, 1989, 2004, 2007 and 2009.

BIS principal Nick Hill said Nate stood out. “He has a gift for public speaking. He is humorous, natural and understands his audience, which is a feat for a 13-year-old.”
