Hey Students,

February is the month of Love, but more importantly, it’s Black History Month. African American’s have contributed or invented numerous things that we use on a daily basis. From the super soaker, to spark plugs for a car, to a coin changer. The list goes on and on.

Throughout this month of February, let us keep in mind the role of Black History in our nation’s narrative. And as the calendar turns to March, our homes, schools, churches, and town halls need to execute the vision of our forefathers, and make

EVERY month, a time in which Black History is not only celebrated, but revered.

In this month’s issue we covered how video games are becoming more and more addictive. Video game addictions in some cases have also lead

The city of Los Angeles will be hosting this year’s NBA All-Star game and my man Kobe Bryant will be leading the way for the West team, as well as

We shouldn’t wait to show love or appreciation for people until a certain time of the year. It should be done all year round.

Have a safe blessed month.Respectfully,Nick CannonCEO Celebrity High Magazine

season kicks into high gear,

conversations about college

prep usually involve grades, test scores

and more grades. But especially for

those with dreams of going away for

school, there is a whole other aspect

of college that needs its own prep …

college life! When mom and dad aren’t

around, there are things you will need to

learn to do yourself and senior year is a

great time to start.

YOUR COLLEGE ROOMMATE MAY NOT LIKE IT IF...

BUY YOUR OWN STUFFIn college you will

most likely be on

plan will need to purchase all of your

own personal items. Sales, coupons,

discounts and cheap stuff are your

friends. Learning how to buy stuff with

a budget now can help you not end

up having to decide between food and

toothpaste at the end of the month.

DO YOUR OWN LAUNDRY Do your own laundry

If you don’t do your

own laundry, you’d

be amazed how easy it is to totally

DESTROY a load of clothes. Learn to do

this before you’re in college and cannot

04

GET IT UPIn college no one is

going to make sure

you get up and go to

class. If you are late

or skip it’s not going to be anyone’s

fault but your own and your mom’s best

worded note won’t get you an ounce of

sympathy. Learning to this for yourself

now is not only easy, but can give you an

edge over your classmates who can’t get

up for morning labs. wardrobe you ruined

02

GET IT TOGETHER Is your room a total

disaster area? Are

you known as the family mess? You

might want to get that in check before

you head off to college. Your mom may

not mind picking up your dirty towels but

dorm rooms have a tendency to be small

and your roommate may have more of

an issue. Nothing causes roommate war

faster than “my roommate is totally gross

and disgusting” and your new roomie

may choose to do more than just nag

and criticize. Unless you WANT to be on

Judge Judy … just sayin’.

03 GET A GRIP Get a grip. People

are gay. People

wear strange hats

and rainbow tights that you just won’t

understand. People will have breakdowns

in front of you. People will vomit on/

near you. If you come into college with

the mentality that you’re a special little

flower, and that your way is the only way

that matters, or that people are always

going to do what YOU think they’re

supposed to, or just can’t handle it when

stuff falls apart; you’re in for a rude

awakening. Stop it. In between classes

and parties, college is also about learning

to deal when your professor gives you

a totally “unjustified” fail, or when your

roommate throws all your clothes out into

the quad (remember that messy thing).

Basically just handling it when things just

aren’t going well and knowing you can’t

always rely on mom and dad to “fix” it.

You don’t have to agree with everything

but you do have to deal with it. So,

senior year, practice opening your mind,

get some yoga and get a grip.

GET THOSE E-SKILLS A lot of

communication in

college may happen

by email. But emailing college professors

isn’t the same as emailing your friens.

Senior year is a great time to get some

11 CELEBRITYHIGHMAG.COM OCTOBER 2012

I had been talking to this guy for months. He told me he wasn’t talking to anybody else and we were supposed to be together. One night

after we went out, we started messing around in my car. I didn’t want go all the way and hook up but he said he understood. The next day I woke up to him changing his Facebook status to “in a relationship” with another girl! I was crushed, devastated … and mad! How he could do this to me, and in public at that, was something I just couldn’t understand. I felt played, stupid and embarrassed but I also wanted to punch him in the face. As probably anybody who’s been wronged in life, betrayed, by a friend, family member or boyfriend, the answer seemed short and simple. Revenge.

Should I slash his tires? Coat the inside of his shorts with chilli powder? Start posting super embarrassing pics of him on fb? I spent days, probably even weeks fuming about what he had done and trying to unleash my inner Emily Thorne (for those of you who watch Revenge) to come up with ways to get back at him. I sent his new girlfriend pics of us hanging out the night before and told her everything about our relationship. He simply told her that he’d only hung out with me because he had figured out he really wanted to be with her but thought he should tell me in person. Of course she believed him, and then started posting about how I was just the jealous ex and really needed to get over it. I tried posting a really embarrassing video of him but everyone just thought it was funny, which made him even more popular, and which made it even worse when he started a bunch of

posts about his “jealous ex” that was stalking him and wouldn’t leave him alone, then went on to talk about how sorry he felt for me that I was alone and so hung up on the past. I was re-horrified. Everything I tried to do to get back at him backfired in a major way. Revenge seemed like the best way to deal with things at the time, but I had started to wonder if it really was.

In all of my online battling I came across a quote that said “revenge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” So true. Wasn’t what I was doing sort of like drinking poison? And I kept waiting for my ex to socially die, but he never did which just made me angrier while he was fine, maybe even better than fine. I figured after that I had two choices. I wanted revenge, because it feels like justice but it’s not. Revenge isn’t about getting the bad guy and making the world better. Revenge is simply about doing damage to the bad guy. So I could argue that you just shouldn’t look for revenge at all, which is fair. On the other hand I could look at it as pursuing effective revenge where the main obstacles are making sure you don’t feel like an awful person afterwards and the obstacle of letting go. I came to believe that the difference between simple revenge – an eye for an eye and all that – and smart revenge – was trying to bring positive change from your actions. So what is the smartest most effective revenge? Being a good person. What a sappy thought, right? But honestly, being the

I’VE GOTISSUES!

11

good guy is almost always the best way to go. A lot of the times this does mean doing the difficult but right thing, taking the high road, and being the bigger person. Sometimes it just means you need to appear that way. Whatever the case may be, the end goal is the same: look so good and honorable that your target of revenge looks like an enormous douche bag. Being, or appearing to be a good person, will bring people to your side.

Fighting when angry has all sorts of ways it can only end badly. My ex won our online battle because he played smarter — he opted to be the good guy. It didn’t matter if I was right or wrong—he let me play the role of the crazed girl while he sat back and calmly acted like the concerned friend. He won by doing two things you don’t normally think about in a moment of anger: 1. Choosing not to fight. 2. Being the better person. This is often the most simple and effective revenge. It’s easy to accomplish. This is a reversal. It’s like with martial arts, where you’re taught to use your opponent’s force against them. This is why being a good person is almost always the best revenge, even if you’re not really being good at all.

That said, I do truly believe that in most any situation the best thing to do is to actually be good. Most of the time it will work out in your favor. The best revenge is moving on and showing that guy you’re perfectly fine without him. When he sees or hears about you having a great time without him, he’ll feel way more bummed out than he would if you did something terrible to him.

KARMIN//In April of 2011, Karmin’s Amy

ignited the blogosphere when

they posted a cover of Chris

after being Tweeted by such hip-

Although they are already adored

by fans around the world for the

pop and hip-hop covers they have

posted on their YouTube Channel

Karmin are ready to show the

CH: How was it being one of most viewed videos in 2011 on you tube?

NN: It was pretty weird but cool Its an honor. We are just still kind of blown away that this happened and all the stuff that spawned off of that this year. We are very thankful and feeling a little bit spoiled lately.

CH: Have any celebrities reached out to you and gave you guys props?

AH: Yes, Nick Cannon who just found us early. There have been a lot of people, actually Nick Cannon is one of the biggest supporters. More would be, quest love, we would love him in the video, Ryan Seacrest, Ellen, World star hip hop that posted our stuff. A lot of blogs that’s not a celebrity. Lindsey Lohan reached out to us which was kind of random. Also, Nicki minaj , chris brown & busta rhymes

CH: Do you want to do any collabrations with artist in particular?

NN: Kanye West would be our top choice

CH: What was your family’s thoughts to the huge response?

NN: My parents are kind of funny, they were definitely really happy for us but at the same time they wanted to make sure that we didn’t go crazy, that we were getting sleep and rest.AH: I think both of our parents had a similar reaction . It was funny. Our moms are afraid about doing interviews so whenever a new station would call our house our dads would do the interviews. But they are just really happy for us but they are also being just very careful. They want to make sure that we don’t get swept up into something bad. This whole new world is just scary if you don’t know anything about it.

CH: Do you guys have a memorable moment in you career thus far?

Both: Most memorable.. There are a couple. SNL is up there. Playing the iHeart music festival in Vegas. Sitting down with Kanye West. Yes meeting with Kanye was pretty surreal

CH: So have you guys done an actual collaboration with kayne?

NN: No, he actually wanted to sign us. We met up with him and Jay-Z were recording ‘watch the throne’ in NY. So we met him in the lobby and we just hung out and played music for each other for like 2 hrs it was wild.

CH: Did you guys both end up finished school at Berkley or did you guys have to step away?

AH: We did. We both graduated in 2008 and we got out and we were frantically looking for a job, back in the time where the economy was in the gutter it was really tough. I don’t think either of us could find a job then. I think nick ended up working at a boxing gym answering the phones and I was a wedding singer like Adam Sandler style. So we did that for a couple a years then that’s when we decided to start Karmin cause we got so frustrated that things weren’t really going anywhere for us and we needed something special for us to pursue. We never thought it could explode like this.

CH: How did the name Karmin come about?

AH: Karmin was a band name we invented one day because we wanted it to be a duo and not nickname like Sonny & Cher or the average duo thing.. We were looking for a band name on the Internet and we went through the Latin dictionary.

CH: How would you describe this record? What can your fans expect?

AH: It has a lot of pop, techy melodies and harmonies like our covers on you tube but imagine that with super star producers behind it. It has some amazing tracks. We co-wrote a lot of the songs with quad kelly who did grenade for Bruno Mars and a bunch of amazing hit songs .We did a lot of the album on our own besides the song write. The most surprising part for me is that there’s a lot of rap on it. We asked our fans how much rap they wanted they said 50% and this is my first time really writing rhymes and I was a little bit nervous. When we turned them into LA Reid he was like “ we don’t need any features on this album it is really strong.”

CH: So there are actually no features?AH: No features on this release I think the next release we will have some because we have been definitely talking to some people but I think this one we wanted to make sure it was 100% Karmin it is a new sound, There is a lot of rap, catchy melodies and a lot of organic elements, like throw back hip-hop sounds like really crunchy drums and acoustic guitar and trombone, Nick is an amazing trombone player, so we defiantly kept to our roots, but its an evolution of Karmin . Its heading towards that main stream direction.

CH: What advise would you give to teens trying to pursue music right now?NN: Take it into your own hands, EPIC IS AMAZING but don’t wait for a label . Put everything into your own hands. oct 20 + 21runforyourlives.com

Running is a great sport and good for your health and all that. But some of us need some motivation. So if being healthy just isn’t cutting it how about running from flesh-eating, virus-spreading, bloody zombies? Seems like that should get you moving right?

Running from Live ZombiesRun for You Lives is one race where your legs giving out are the least of your prob-lems. It is a first-of-its-kind event that’s one part 5K, one part obstacle course, one part escaping the clutches of zombies - and all parts awesome!

Before the race, runners will be given a flag belt, just like the overly intimidating game of flag football. These flags represent the runner’s health. The zombies want to take the flags and maybe eat your brains.

Runners will navigate a series of challenging obstacles throughout a 5K course in an attempt to reach the finish line as a survivor - all while avoiding zombies. At the end of this adventure race, you get to celebrate survival (or zombie transformation) with live entertainment and music, local celebrities, vendors, and more.

Registration packages for participants include a race shirt, admission to the Apoca-lypse Party, a medal signifying your survival or zombie transformation, and advanced training for the zombie apocalypse. Spectator and camping packages are also avail-able. Prizes will be given to the top male and female human finishers in several age brackets, including: 14-19; 20-29; 30-39; and 40 and up. There will also be an awards bracket for military participants. A portion of every ticket sold will be donated

to the American Red Cross. The apocalypse is going down in the San Diego/ Los Angeles Area October 20 and 21, 2012. For more info visit runforyourlives.com

Running from Virtual Zombies “Zombies, Run!” is an app that encourages the fitness-phobic to run ever faster in order to avoid being eaten by zombies. It encourages users to “stay fit and save the world at the same time” by creating an immersive audio environment where runners must collect various items in order to save a city from a plague of zombies.

The player is called ‘Runner Five’, who comes from a tiny base which is the last remnant of humanity after the zombie apocalypse. Every time the player goes out running in the real world, they collect virtual ‘supplies’ such as batteries, water and canned food, for their community.

The player has to run frequently to keep the base growing, and at the end of each run, they can decide how to allocate the batteries, bottled water or canned food. And the more they run, the more they discover about the dark backstory: how did the zombie apocalypse happen? Is there any hope for a vaccine? What is Runner Five’s secret mission?

Zombies, Run! can be played anywhere in the world, at any speed - from walking to jogging to running, and even on a treadmill. The game contains over 30 mis-sions, each lasting 20-30 minutes long. The app allows players to listen to their own music and playlists while running. Distance, time, pace, are recorded for each run. Custom mission packs will be available for purchase to help players train for races, along with options for cyclists. The app is currently available for both iPhone and Android.

Scare Tactics: why we love it when fear is a factor

It’s not the most logical thing in the world. We love cookies and hate the dentist because we like things that feel good and hate stuff that hurts, right? So if that’s the case then why do we love being scared?

From horror movies, to haunted houses, to roller coasters to even daredevil stunts fear is a factor and people love it. The fact that some people like to be scared out of their mind never ceases to baffle those who would just as soon witness the Jigsaw Killer designed death traps in the Saw movies as would have teeth pulled for no reason. But to the millions who crave some form of scare tactic, as well as to experts in media psychology, it makes perfect sense. Why?

Now, chances are there are as many different answers to that question as there are styles of scary movies. But the experts have weighed in with a few answers. One 2007 Science Daily study found that people don’t always avoid “pain.” “It certainly seems counterintuitive that so many people would voluntarily immerse themselves in almost two hours of fear, disgust and terror. Why do people pay for this? How is this enjoyable?” University of California researchers concluded what your average every day horror-movie -loving – roller coaster – riding –thrill seeker already knows. People can experience both fear and excitement at the same time and so many of these people go looking for the “safe scare.” “We know that, in an hour or two, we’re going to walk out whole,” says a California State University Psychology Professor “We’re not going to have any holes in our head, and our hearts will still be in our bodies.”

But those hearts will likely be pounding a bit harder than if you had just seen, say, Madicascar 3. And that’s what explains a lot of the attraction . “If we have a relatively calm, uneventful lifestyle, we seek out something that’s going to be exciting for us, because our nervous system requires periodic revving, just like a good muscular engine,” says Stuart Fischoff, an expert on the subject. “Horror movies are one of the better ways to get really excited.”

WHY YOUR PARENTS ARE PROBABLY OVER ITExperts agree that Teens and twenty-somethings are more likely to look for intense experiences. But the older you get the less likely adults are to seek out experiences that make their palms sweat and heart race. Why? Because often between job losses, divorces, financial issues and probably even parenting bratty teenagers, real life is scary enough.

OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE WORLD HOW IT SHOULD BEI have to say, I’m not a fan of gore. I know there are those out there that will disagree with me on this based on the box office numbers for Hostel alone, but personally, I think all the blood and guts is not scary. It’s just gross. And once you’ve gotten used to a certain level of grossness, you need to up the ante before you can get that reaction again which just leads to creepy, bizarre and weird.

But that being said, even the bloodiest of horror flicks share something with the sappiest of fairytales, the (sometimes relatively) happy ending. It’s been made fun of a lot but scary movies, sometimes more than other kinds, tend to stick to a strict moral code. There are clear bad guys and good guys and you already know that

the people doing the “right” thing are much more likely to make it to the end credits, then say the super jerky athlete who picks up the deranged hitchhiker.

But despite the “happy endings” and excitement factor horror movies are the least genre listed amongst people’s favorite movies. Firschoff has a possible answer “Generally, people anticipate feeling entertained and feeling good when they leave a movie,” explains Fischoff. But while horror films excite and arouse, they “often leave people feeling nervous and unsettled. This is not a state which leads to fond memories.” As anyone who saw nightmares after seeing Saw can confirm.

TRUESTORIES

REVEALED: MY MOM IS BIPOLAR

When I was a little kid I used to pretend my mom was a super hero. It was the only explanation I had as to why she’d sometimes be super excited, like the week she pulled me out of school for a week to go to every amusement park we could think of and why other times she’d stay in her room with the

door closed for days at a time, or worse yet disappear.

When I was six I came home from school to find police cars and ambulances

surrounding our house, my grandmother screaming and crying in the yard and my

father holding his head in his hands on the stoop. It wasn’t long before I figured out

my mother was in the back of ambulance that had just gone screeching away, sirens

blaring, and I began to cry too. They told me my mother had been hurt. They didn’t

tell me it had been a suicide attempt. My mother eventually came back home. I knew

she took medication, but at the time didn’t really know for what.

As I grew up it was like living in a secret prison. Everyone in the house would adjust

their schedule based on what my mom could or couldn’t do on any given day. I felt

alone and trapped. I couldn’t have friends over because you never know what might

happen and I ended up losing friends altogether because it becomes weird when you

can’t explain why they can never come to your house.

When I was thirteen I woke up one Sunday morning to sirens. My mother was nearly

unconscious due to self inflicted cuts she had made before sprawling herself across a

lawn chair in the backyard. My family decided to finally give meaning to the word I’d

hear them whisper in the halls when everyone thought I was asleep; bipolar. They said

it was a mental illness where people swing between extreme highs and lows and that

my mother had been diagnosed when I was four. She had been taking medication,

but now she wasn’t and while there seemed to be an explanation, there didn’t seem

to be a whole lot of answers.

When she returned this time she started disappearing for hours at a time and refused

to tell anyone where she’d been. She talked in a strange voice, that wasn’t hers,

broke things in the house, threw away clothes, pictures, my laptop, my dad’s Xbox,

my grandmother’s favorite baking dish. She became violent, fighting us all if we tried

to stop her from destroying the house. I spent the next year barely sleeping, door

blocked with a dresser, because I thought my mom might destroy my room or maybe

even hurt me. My emotions became as unstable as my mom’s behavior: I was angry

for the crazy things she did or said, resentful when she would act normally and try to

be my mom again, guilty for resenting her—this wasn’t easy for her either. I’d dry

my tears and put on a brave face before I walked into class every day. But I was tired

mentally, emotionally, and physically.

My dad and grandma would argue about whether or not they should put her in an

institution. There was money to consider, and the fact that they both loved her and

would miss her, but they also had to consider me and her health. Some days, almost

like magic, she would seem totally normal. And even though I know they both knew

better I think they would start to believe she was better. But she could never fool me,

and I’d learned that “normal” is a place people with bipolar visit, but never live and

usually within days she’d be back on the high/low rollercoaster again. It wasn’t until

her third suicide attempt (which involved a purposeful kitchen fire) that she went back

into the hospital and got back on her medication.

Though the medication she is on stabilizes her moods a lot more, there still isn’t a cure

for bipolar disorder. And the scarier part is that it’s genetic, so some nights I can’t

sleep from nightmares that someday this might be me. But after going through this

with my mom, I hope that people with family members who have mental illnesses can

learn to love them anyway.

@chanceknowitallOctober is here, lets all cheer because Fall is the best time of the year. Windy days and cold nights, Halloween Horrors are a scary fright! Now that fall is here we can break out our most scariest Halloween costumes, go in search of the great pumpkin, bobs for apples and visit a few Haunted Houses. October brings Harvest Festivals, falling leaves and hayrides. And a lot of fun things to do but for those of you who don’t have a clue on what to do this month check out a few ideas I pulled out of my hat.

No plans on Oct 31st, how bout going to a costume party? There is always at least one person in your school throwing a Halloween party in October. And the best thing of all, it’s usually free. All you need is a costume. And if you can’t afford one, below are some cos-tumes that you can put together right from your bedroom closet.

1. Punk Rocker, all it takes is a pair of black ripped up jeans or jean skirt. A cut

up shirt and some colored hair dye. Black boots and some accessories and your done.

2. Super Model; get best dress, your mom’s high heel shoes and loads of

make up and VOILA! You’re a Super model.

3. Ghost, get an old white sheet, cut holes in the eye and you have your ghost.

4. Sportsman, get out your old or recent sports uniform and go as you are.

What! No one is giving a party, and you have some cash to spend then try going to a theme park. You get to dress up, walk through mazes, get chase by Ghouls and Goblins, and hang out with your friends. Most theme parks have scary nights going on all through the month of October.

For those of you who don’t like Halloween but enjoy the Fall, you can go to a pumpkin patch, viist your neighborhood harvest festival and maybe find a hay ride to go on with your Boo. No Halloween pun intended, lol. If all else fails going trick or treating, passing out treats or visiting your local children’s hospital and telling spooky stories to kids who cant go out. All is free of charge and fun to do. But whatever you choose, just choose to be safe. gshock .com

J.K. ROWLING: THE CASUAL VACANCY J. K. Rowling’s first novel since the conclu-sion of the Harry Potter series doesn’t feature magic. Instead the book is about a town at war … Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... described as a “black comedy” The Casual Vacancy is J.K.
