“Thou hast formed us for Thyself, and our heartsare restless till they find rest in Thee.”

For PreparationGene Fant- From the Web Journal, First ThingsThe longing of our hearts for something more, something beyond ourselves ispowerful. Intuitively, we know that we need something to complete our brokenhearts, minds, and spirits. Augustine rightly points out that our completion isfound not in romance, wealth, nor learning but rather in the One who formed uswhen he says: “Thou hast formed us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless tillthey find rest in Thee.” (Augustine, Confessions)I find myself pondering Augustine’s statement with great frequency. As ateenager, I felt this restlessness quite deeply, longing for something that mightbring me peace; his words meant a great deal to me then. The second part of that statement, “Our hearts are restless till they find rest inThee,” articulates the ultimate restoration provided by the Gospel: sinners findingredemption through the Redeemer. Our culture, however, tries to take a paringknife to it with two quick slices.First, they try to pare away the last two words, “in Thee.” Satisfaction for ourrestlessness is proposed in any number of directions, each of them leading us toserve the creation rather than the Creator. A faint hope persists that satisfactionmay be found apart from God, but that hope is false indeed. Faced with theultimate failure of such pseudo-satisfactions, they take a second slice, paringaway the next few words, “till they find rest,” so that we are left with the out-of-context lament that the Moderns so powerfully explored: “Our hearts arerestless.”That second slice removes not only God, but real hope as well, leaving us with anihilistic worldview that craves only that which allows one to share one’s misery,as Mephistophilis so famously termed it in Christopher Marlowe’s, Dr. Faustus:“misery loves company”. Faced with the choice between hopelessness and God,too often we choose despair and wallow in the torments that such a decisionbrings. The beauty, though, of this season is that we are reminded of the context ofAugustine’s observation: the Gospel itself, that God not only formed us but alsothat He Himself came to dwell among us so that He Himself might bring rest(oration) to our hearts. The Spirit haunts and hounds us until our restlessnessconverts into peace through Him.

Trinity Institute for Christian Growth

Adult Sunday School Series: The Emotionally Healthy Church“It is not possible to be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature” sayspastor and author Pete Scazzero. What do you think? For many of us, we do not knowwhat to do with our emotions. Some feel guilt about having emotions, some carelessly lettheir emotions run unchecked, and still others deny that they have them at all. Spiritualmaturity can be measured by Christ-likeness. If you look at Jesus in the gospels, he cries, grieves, gets angry, is filled with joy, gets tired, and more. Jesus was anything but anemotionally frozen Messiah. Join us for an eight-week study starting Oct. 11th on learningto embrace that God created us with emotions, discovering how those emotions have beenmisdirected, and helping one another figure out what it looks like for our emotions to behealed, reordered, and redirected towards love for God and neighbor.
