Economic growth is only an instrument whilehuman development is the outcome to improve well beingof people. Human development is also important for takingadvantage of demographic dividend. Education is thecentral instrument for achieving human development.

Dreze and Sen (2013) provide several reasons whybasic education is important for development and socialprogress. First, quality of life can be improved with capabilityof reading and writing. Second, the economic opportunitiesand employment prospects depend greatly on educationand skills. Third, education leads to getting political voiceof people and better democracy. Fourth, education can playa major role in tackling health problems particularly publichealth. Fifth, educational development is important forbringing human rights and understanding legal rights. Sixth,

schooling for young women can lead to womenempowerment. Seventh, education can reduce inequalitiesin societies. Finally, learning and studying can be immenselyenjoyable. Similarly higher education will have immenseopportunities for social progress. For example, because ofeducation, people from poor and middle class reachedgreater heights in industry, academics, politics and otherfields. Some have become even Prime Ministers andPresidents of India.

It is critical for developing a modern economy, vibrant polity and a just society. It widens our horizon andshapes our thinking. Youth are the future of our country andit is necessary that they acquire the right values. Aristotlehad mentioned that “Educating the mind without educatingthe heart is no education at all.

Innovations are important for the progress of anysociety. Acharya Nagarjuna University can make innovationsimproving quality of teaching and research. The universitymust prioritize and do innovative research in some areas. Iam hopeful the university will achieve greater heights infuture. My advice to students is that there is no short cut forsuccess. I feel that four things are needed for success. These are: hard work, focus or direction, discipline and self-confidence. There is no limit for success with these qualities.

The resource person was Prof.Ramkrishna Bhattacharya, Emeritus Fellow in English,UGC, New Delhi and an internationally known authority onLokayata studies. In the first lecture, he traced origins ofphilosophical materialism in India and its initial struggle withidealism to an important text of Upanishadic tradition i.eKatha Upanishad. Further he pointed out the importanceof the Katha Upanishad as a document embodying theconflict between idealism and materialism.

In his second lecture Prof. Bhattacharya examinedthe philosophical views of Jabali of Ramayana and tried toprove that they were actually materialist views which havetaken a definite shape against the backdrop of AjitaKesakambali’s world outlook.

He said that there is an urgent need tomove away from the Euro-centric approach of SocialSciences being practiced both in India and abroad in orderto study Indian social and political phenomena.
