Planning to Win: Register Now!

...Diamonds are a Marburn Alumni’s Best Friend?

This summer, Marburn high school students have been invited to participate in Eastern Kentucky University’s “Planning to Win” program.“Planning to Win” is a summer transitions program specifically designed for high school students with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder and other cognitive disorders. The program is geared towards high school students who are planning to attend college in the fall as well as those who are only exploring post-secondary educational options at any college. Students will attend three days of educational and inspiring workshops, fellowship with current college students, and spend two nights in an EKU residence hall.

The dates are Wednesday, June 17---Friday, June 19. Campers should arrive at 9:00 a.m. Wednesdayfor registration, and campers depart Friday at noon.

A few reminders:

1. Campers must be sophomores, juniors or seniors

2. They must provide their own transportation to and from the camp

3. They do not have to be coming to EKU upon graduation

4. Cost is $10, which includes a T-shirt, backpack; all food and recreation is free

5. Campers will stay in an EKU residence hall.

The 2015 registration form has not been posted yet, but keep checking http://disabilities.eku.edu/planning-win for upcoming details.

Our Board chair, Craig Morrison, is an EKU alum--all the better reason to attend!

Marburn alumni Jason Laudick was featured on the Leo Alfred Jewelers Facebook page--it’s always great to see one of our alumni doing well! You’ll see Jason again soon in Marburn’s Annual Fund publication!

The second annual Super FUN Run will be held October 25 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Grove City. The run is in honor of Marburn alumniVito Nocero, who died suddenly in June of 2013. Proceeds from the run go to support the S.P.I.C.E. Program (Special People in Catholic Education) and Marburn’s annual fund. Vito had a vision of a Catholic education where all students, despite their learning differences, could belong. Please consider supporting his vision. To register or contribute, visit http://www.ourladyofperpetualhelp.net

Room 5: Learning Central!Mason Patrick, a visitor, and Bella Frattianne (bottom left) are using an old fashioned thesaurus. The goal was to find three words in their original writing that they wanted to improve upon. Off to the thesaurus they went. They enjoyed going retro.

Room 5’s Science and Social Studies units are closely related this term. In Science, the students are studying fossils and in Social Studies, artifacts. Mason Patrick (top right) and Bella Frattianne (top left) investigate the artifacts that another classmate buried in a box of soil. The goal was to act as an archaeologist and use prior information about their classmates and try to figure out who would have buried such artifacts. Matthew Hughes (bottom right) is taking a closer look at an artifact so that he can record his observations and make a logical prediction. Their study of fossils included an activity to simulate soft tissue and hard tissue materials. The students used clay and plaster of paris to make imprints of various small items.

Room 8: Science in ActionMrs. Ward and Miss Skinner’s homeroom, the Great Room 8, has been studying ecosystems. As part of this study, the class dissected owl pellets, examined skeletal remains, and collected data on the number and type of mammals eaten by the owls. The class made observations in their science notebooks. Currently, the class is in the process of compiling this data into a frequency chart and will produce a bar graph to compare the types and numbers of mammals eaten.

To further extend their learning, the class will look at data over a number of years to determine the health of the ecosystem over time.

Mrs. Delfino’s class in Mid-Mod 1 has been immersing themselves in Greek Mythology. With their course work, they started to investigate the origins of mythology and what purpose the stories of Ancient Greece served. In particular, the class studied Theseus and the Minotaur to kick off the unit. Their study culminated with Lego-constructed mazes to demonstrate their understanding of the myth. Each group came up with a unique design and collaboratively built some great products. Additionally, students continued to communicate their understanding and extend these concepts through creating their own myth to explain a natural phenomenon.
