How has it been for you this
year? I shall remember 2008
for the winds. For three
months I poured over the
weather forecasts to find a
Tuesday when I could go to
Rutland and not get drenched
as one motored back up the
drift. I eventually found one
with light winds and cloud
cover – and the fishing was the
best I ever experienced on
Rutland.
Whilst it may have little impact
on the Association, the
organisation of English Fly
Fishing is in turmoil. The
government has decided that
for grant and representational
purposes they will only relate
to a single angling body This
has forced the various branches
to work together to develop a
single angling organisation.
At the moment this is going to
be called The Angling Trust.
The Salmon and Trout
Association has previously
been recognised as the
organising body for fly fishing.
My understanding is that
because of its charitable status,
the S&TA is currently barred
from representing fly fishing
on this new body. At the
moment the S&TA have voted
not to give up their charity
status and will only have a
peripheral role.
The Angling Trust will be
formed in January. Its brief
includes managing ational
and International Angling
Competitions and through an
associated organisation called
‘Fish Legal’, advice to
members. It will the only body
that Sports England recognises.

Miserable Weather for the Autumn Association
Match on Rutland on Saturday 4th. October
Al Grice-Jackson of Fish Hawks’B’ takes an early fish
only yards from the harbour wall
Anglers were greeted with
unpleasantly cold temperatures
and a forecast of winds
strengthening to 20+ mph in
the afternoon.
Nevertheless, with only two
places (including relegation
places) already decided all but
one team (Invicta ‘B’) were
fully represented.
In order to be fair to all teams
Nigel Savage informed
everyone of a large stocking, in
Sailing Club Bay the previous
day.
Many had practiced the day
before and the boats split into
three groups and set off for the
known hot spots. One group
set off for Fantasy Island,
another turned left towards
Gibraltar Point and a small
group fished just outside the
harbour.
Whilst very cold the wind did
not start to blow until midday.
By 2.00pm it was so strong
that it became difficult to get
the line behind you. It did
warm up and blow less
viciously for the last hour.
Nevertheless most anglers
were pleased to come in.
With fish in many places it is
not surprising that a large
variety of methods and flies
worked.
Perhaps one of the most
unusual, which produced a
limit towards Fantasy Island
was hoppers pulled just sub
surface.
Many anglers used floating
lines and nymphs, but Graham
Pearson, fishing in the Sailing
Club Bay to Gibraltar Point
area used a fast sinking line
and blobs. He started his
drifts right on the edge of the
week beds and started pulling
before the line had sunk too
deep. Like many others he
found the morning the most
productive with six fish by
midday. It took him until
5.15pm to catch his other two
fish.
All the teams, who were
heading the table before the
match, achieved enough points
to remain in first place,
although none of them won on
the day.
Rutland, in group one, even
though they caught more fish
and had a larger time bonus,
were beaten by Soldier Palmers
by better average weight of
fish. (An unusual occurrence!).
In group two Queen Mother
F.F. came last on the day but
had already won the group.
The Royal Navy/Marines also
came second on the day to
Invicta ‘A’ but that was
enough to give them the Group
Three Title by one point.
At the bottom of the tables the
only change was in Group
Two. A winning performance
by Nick Cox of Bewl ‘B’ gave
them all five points. Just
enough to keep them from last
place.
Anything you can do! Alan Stern of Hanningfield (in the same
boat) catches one in the same place as his boat partner

The Weather for
theAssociation Fun Day was
FU! Sunny, warm and with
only light winds.
The Fishing for the
Association Fun Day was OT
FU! With an average of
only one fish each it was
dreadful! Three out of the
thirteen boats failed to catch a
fish. Only one team managed
to scramble at
least one fish
each. Only
two anglers
managed three
fish and the
rest scraped
about for ones
and twos.
With fish so
scarce there
was no one
area, fly or
method which
deserves
recognition.
A few fish were caught early
on the eastern shore between
The Bell and the Old Road. In
the afternoon most boats ended
on the western shore between
Harrison’s Corner and the
Three Trees Point. Here the
closer you could get to the
bank the more chance there
was of a fish.
Most anglers used floating
lines but they were not
exclusively successful with a
few fish falling to
slow/intermediate lines.
Fish were caught on buzzers
types, minkies and fry patterns
and at least one angler (in
winning team) fished all
afternoon with a red hopper on
the surface for his one fish.
Who said this
was fun?
One of a few fish caught, tight up to the bank, in the early
afternoon drifting out from Harrison’s Corner
